  1. Okay... Well I'm glad I asked. I was thinking about this yesterday when I filled up. After I got done filling up I slapped my forehead and decided that was a silly thing to do if I wanted to test my fuel light... Thanks for the input.
  2. All of 'em eh? I know the check engine light comes on, [and the fuel light]. Then the oil pressure and temperature lights come on when you crank the motor... Maybe I've got more problems than I had thought... (I'm pretty sure the turn signals, high beam indicator, O/D and N light are not supposed to come on when you turn the key on but if they are I've got some issues to work out). Thanks!
  3. There are times for me on long hauls that I like to keep my stopping to a minimum but still enjoy the ride. I have a 3L Camelbak that I wear for myself. For a while I was driving 700 miles a week (350 miles out Monday morning, then Thursday morning I'd make the haul back) to go between the 2 full time jobs I was working. I rode the bike for economic reasons as well as enjoyment but I needed to make that trip in no more than 6 hours to be on time so I couldn't afford to stop and smell the roses more than necessary. Now, when I take a leisurely ride and my girlfriend comes along unless she has something to drink while we ride, we end up 'needing' to stop quite often. It is hard enough to get her to WANT to come take a ride with me, anything I can do to help make her ride more comfortable and still be able to put a few miles on is a definite plus in my book. Besides, when she is happy it makes my life A LOT easier... Especially when the bike is involved. Just throwing my ).02 response in there, I realize that you were just but I just wanted to throw that out there...
  4. Pinwall Cycle parts is a good place if you really want to pay for parts. You have a 5 year unlimited mileage warranty on your bike. If it is an 08 you still have this warranty so you may be able to get it fixed by the dealer under warranty, unless they can tell that you opened up the controller then you may be in trouble... The handlebar mounted controller is ~600 OEM and the radio main amplifier itself is 12-1400 OEM. Pinwall has the handlebar mounted controls for around $200. I may have a functioning one available that I would be happy to sell you if the other member that I has already talked to me about it decides that he does not want it. Did you take apart the front fairing and check the connections there? Good luck.
  5. Thanks for the input. I presume that it is supposed to, but just wanted to make sure before I start taking stuff apart or spending money to get it functioning properly. Although there is an 09 RSV that does not and an 03 RSV that does not so this really is not conclusive. Bill: thanks
  6. Get on the expressway, tune to a channel with someone on it (I use 19) and politely ask for a radio check.
  7. Holy smokes; that is a GREAT idea! Thanks!
  8. Pg 8-9 of the service manual outlines the resistances of the primary (3.57~4.83 ohms) and secondary coils (10.71~14.49 kohms). Be cautioned though, this resistance test may be inconclusive if you get resistances within tolerance (although conclusive if you are out of tolerance; ie. you DO have a bad coil). The chance of having a bad coil despite the resistances being within tolerance is quite slim. I too have had similar thoughts about mine. The vibration that I had was under heavy acceleration of which I seemed to have greatly helped via a carb sync. As soon as I can figure out how to get to the coils in a reasonable fashion (and get the time to do it) I am going to check mine anyways just to be sure. Hope that helps! Oh, by the way, since my carb sync when I wind it up (I do not have a tach and nor have I hit the rev limiter) mine pulls rather smoothly and to me feels like the power is still pouring on until just about to whre I wuss out in each gear (ie. indicated ~35 or 40 in 1st, ~70 in 2nd, ~90 3rd, 110+ 4th., I have not done 5th and have no intentions on trying). I will say that I have, a few times now, dropped to 3rd on the express way to get around something or someone and I was impressed with the power (compared to trying to drop the hammer in 4th doing 65). Good luck!
  9. Congrats! That is definitely something to be proud of! Thank you and your son for your service and future service to this country. I know that I feel personally feel forever in debt to those that have and continue to serve our country.
  10. While there is probably limited harm in leaving it in the ON or RES position; I turn mine off. I suppose it is habit from some of the other bikes that I have had, one of which I left in the ON position and something was stuck inside the carb so I came out to an empty bike and ~2.5 gallons of gas wasted not to mention having a mess to clean up. Also, if I know the bike is going to sit for more than a couple of days I make a point to shut the gas off a few miles away from my house so I can get it into the garage and the carbs are pretty much empty so there is no gas sitting in the carburetors while I am not around. That is what I do.
  11. Good thinking. If it is hot to the touch then it is TOO hot... Hope you get this bad boy worked out. It would be a shame to get the shaft from your dealer with something like this... Although if it is a stuck thermostat and the bike overheats and it damages something it would still be up to the dealer to fix it since you are clearly covered under the warranty... Good luck, I hope this gets resolved quickly for you.
  12. Oh yea, I'm talking about the little yellow gas can light... Thanks anyways Randy
  13. Hehe, thanks to my age I am a "high risk driver" even though I have yet to be pulled over. I have not received so much as a parking ticket and I'm paying 20% of that for full coverage on 2 bikes and only PI&Liability on a 3rd.
  14. Thanks Randy. What I meant was before starting the bike, the ~2 seconds after you turn the key to the ON position (the speedometer goes all the way full then back down and the check engine light comes on) does the fuel light come on as well? By the way it is an 01 RSV.
  15. I know the fuel sender unit is a common problem and I have read through many of the threads that discuss it but I have yet to see this particular question answered. I also read through the service manual and owner's manual and I did not see anything that discussed that particular behavior (although it is likely that I missed it somewhere)... Does your low fuel light come on with the check engine light when you turn the key to the ON position (then go off after the 2 seconds or whatever it is)? I have seen my low fuel light come on and the trip meter switch to the "F trip" meter but it has been a while since I have seen that. Since the last time I have seen it I have had to switch to reserve with no light or f trip meter - but it is inconclusive whether the thing works or not. If it is supposed to come on when the key is turned to the ON position, then I know there is a problem with my unit. EDIT: Pg 8-37 of the owner's manual goes through the diagnostic and it does not say at any point, turn the key ON and see if the dumb thing lights up, so I am inclined to think that it doesn't, but it would be helpful if someone could tell me for sure. Thanks.
  16. I'll second this... In early august, I put on ~ 900 miles in 2 days, both 100+ all day and the tank & gas cap were warm (obviously) but I definitely would not consider it too hot to touch or anything... Sounds like a visit to the dealer is in order... I am def. interested in hearing about what the problem is; electrical? exhaust leak? gremlin with a torch?
  17. Thanks mini, I fly into London then drive to the lab (~45 minute drive)... I'll try to get ahold of him.
  18. Oh yea, The front brake squeal/grind/whatever it is - I have found that replacing the OEM yamaha metallic (I think) pads with EBC organic (not the HH sintered ones) and applying the syl-gel (anti-squeal brake grease) to the backside of the pads (where they make contact with the calipers) as well as cleaning the brake disc eliminates this gd awful noise.
  19. I was thinking about this, instead of working like I should be, and the guy that I bought my bike from (had it since new) told me that he had to choke it every time because the bike was 'cold-blooded' and it always took a few minutes for him to get it warmed up... I know that how much you ride plays a part into this too... I'm on mine minimum of twice a day - I am a little curious about those of you that take a little more time to warm yours up if you also ride daily, etc. (I do know that ambient air temperature will play a part in it too).
  20. A little searching and you may find that someone has replaced their floorboards with the pegs (I have not searched for that)... If you don't see it, start a new thread and ask the question and someone on here will know if someone has done it or not... On an aside I do know that I have problems with my knees to begin with (which I believe contributes to my discomfort in that riding position) but I don't know that I have tried putting my toes on the pegs instead of the other way... I've got something to try next time I take my wing out I do feel that the Heel/toe shifter is in the way of my feet and have contemplated shaving off the heel part. I know that some other members have done this, and some say they just got used to it after a while. I feel more comfortable with my feet under me while riding (mostly because I like to be able to stand up if necessary for readjustment, extreme low speed maneuvering, or whatever) but again with the leg/joint cramping I have been putting up with my feet out in front. Anyhoot I'll be keeping an eye out for that floorboard to peg question because I too am curious about that...
  21. I'd buy that, but the front has discs on the both sides and a stem that sticks up from the middle...
  22. Mine is like this too...
  23. Welcome welcome! Sounds like you had a good ride home. I am a little surprised about your comments on the controls. I would have expected someone of your height to be more comfortable with the forward controls opposed to the GW with them right under you not to mention your feet planted under the motor. I'm not a big guy (5'8 with a 32" inseam), by any stretch of the imagination; however I've been 'blessed' with clown feet. I have an 82 wing, and have been on a few GL1500s as well as the GL1800s, and a Valkyrie. My complaint with every one of them is my legs cramping up and the difficulty of getting my size 14 between the shifter and the peg without roasting my toes under the motor. Don't get me wrong, GWs are fine machines and I wouldn't hesitate to get on one and ride it cross-country again. (Crash bars make fine foot rests and highway pegs would certainly make it easier/safer to throw my feet up there). Point being, I suspect with some more time you'll get used to the floor boards and probably won't even think about [having to move your feet a little to shift]; but you have my curiosity peaked with your legs not being cramped or whatever. Regardless, it sounds like you are real happy with your new-to-you bike and I hope that you get many many enjoyable miles out of it! By the way, there is a rule around here about posting pictures when you talk about a 'new' anything... So when you get a chance you best post some pictures of your bike!! Again, welcome! I know there are some members scattered around your area, you may want to take some time and poke around the meet and eat section to see about making it out to one of those to meet some folks! Keep it shiny side up! - Rick M.
  24. No choke for me... Open garage, gear up, mount, start bike, back out of garage, check for smooth throttle response, take off.
