Why do the ventures whine?
Bobby G replied to Red Rider's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
OK guys, here's what the Yami engineering experts told me when I visited them a few weeks ago (they are a client of mine). The "chirp" is fixable, but the "whine" is an engineering glitch that has not been addressed by them in 10 years, and does NOT come from the cut of the gearing, but from the clutch. Mess with the oil all you want, but your "whine" is here to stay. Sorry. -
New LOUD gear whine - opinions?
Bobby G replied to BigBoyinMS's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
The "whine", the "chirp", the "Jetson-mobile", whatever you want to call it, is generated by the clutch. It's provided free of charge on all 1999 - 2009 RSV's, and there is nothing that can be done to completely eradicate it. I just came from a meeting with Yami folks in Cypress (other business related), and they confirmed what most knowledgeable mechanics have been saying for years.....it's the design of the clutch. They said the first one to find a 100% fix for it wins a cookie! -
Snag, hit me up and I'll tell you anything you want to know. I've been a member, Mentor and Ride Captain in GA since 4/07. We just buried 3 members of the GA National Guard who were KIA in A-Stan this past weekend. Very tough few days, but I'm very proud of how the hometown folks turned out for these Heroes.

The Clearview is my WS of choice in the winter, but the shorty wide I run now (ShowChrome 17 1/2") is so much better in the warmer weather, when I'm more prone to ride rain or shine. I can easily see over the top, and it's wider profile greatly enhances both the stability and the buffetting. I've shown it to several RSV guys and they have made the switch also.

Not anything I'd ride cross country, but I got a sneaky peek at it this week, and it's unlike anything I've ever seen. 193 HP, only 405 lbs., ABS and Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), 4 different power modes, central ram air intake, two injectors per cylinder, and a rev range that peaks at 14,200 RPM. Heard that it will sell for about $17K, maybe a little less. It is truly a piece of work. http://www.s1000rr.com Check it out. Might just be my "second" scoot!

99 RSV Gas Mileage
Bobby G replied to Yamastretch's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I run 89 gas in my '99 RSV, fill to the same level all the time, and consistently get 43 - 45 mpg when riding solo around town. Just came off a 435 mile trip this weekend, but had my better half on the back (she elected to leave the Harley home - sore back. I wonder why??? ), and the milage dropped to 36 - 38. That also includes a lot of mountain riding and high rpm speeds, and heavier then usual bags. Not too much by way of flat, high speed terrain. All in all, I'm not totally unhappy with that result. I run K&N air filters, Sampson pipes, did not rejet, softened the air pressure in the Metzlers to 36 front and 38 rear, and have not done any carb or color tuning in years. If you can't get to at least 40mpg after some of the suggested fixes, it might be time for some expert intervention. -
tall vs short windscreens
Bobby G replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I switched out my tall clearview for a Show Chrome shortie/wide screen, and I love it. It is nearly 4" shorter, and 4" wider, and makes a world of difference to me. I am 6', and now see just over the top of the screen, rain or shine, which I love. When everyone else is getting pelted in the face by bugs recently, I was bug free. The air flow is perfect, and the handling is great too. I just filled up today after a trip to Athens GA and some local riding, and went 197 miles on 4.2 gallons of 89 octane. 47 mpg on my '99 Venture is da bomb!- 21 replies

Rear Shock Questions
Bobby G replied to GaThumper's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
What up Chip? Hope you are well and having fun on what may be the best Venture out there, if you know what I mean. (And I know you do!) I'm enjoying mine immensely, but think my rear shock may have seen better days. I'll check with Elmer (former owner) this weekend. When I sit on the bike, there's this rubbing sound coming from the shock. Time for a check up! Hope to see you soon. Bobby -
After Market Exhaust
Bobby G replied to OutlawRider's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
My '99 has a very nice set of Sampson slashcut's and has a wonderful low rumble that get's appropriately loud when it's throttle up time. Sounds more like a V-8 motor boat then a motorcycle. No re-jetting was necessary when installed. -
Yeah, I did call them, and talked to Patti. What a sweetie. She had Alan call me tonight, but I had already figured things out with a little trial and error (more trial than error!). He and I chatted for a while, and I will definitely call on them again if needed. Very nice folks, and a good product line up.

I got a Show Chrome shield, and love it. It's 4" wider at the bottom, and 3" shorter. Great line of sight, and good wind deflection. No buffeting at all. Comes in clear and smoke tint.

Never mind. Tail light/brake light lightbar successfully installed and works great. Makes a world of difference in being seen from behind. I highly recommend one. Just mine...

The Diamond R light bar has two wires - brown and green. Any idea which ones to connect them to? Thanks!

Here's a few more of the flag rig. Looks like an angle iron bolted to the bottom of the trunk through the existing holes, a couple of u-bolts to hold the upper part of the flag pole to the angle iron, and two chrome fishing pole rigs clamped to the saddlebag rails. I'm sure these are available at Bass Pro Shops. Pretty basic, but effective, and not as unattractive as some I've seen.

I saw a very cool trunk fairing lightbar the other day. Wondered if anyone has any leads on who makes or sells them. I've attached a pic. Thanks.

I am 27,000 miles on a KZ400, 18,000 miles on a Shadow 750, 50,250 miles on a VTX 1300, and now 650 miles on my new (old) RSV - - and never a drop yet! I am soooooo overdue!!!!!

New to the Venture Circuit as of Yesterday morning :)
Bobby G replied to LilBeaver's topic in Watering Hole
Rick, I just bought your RV's twin, only mine is a 1999 with 39K very well cared for miles, Sampson slashcut's and a few other upgrades. Original owner was a Yami mechanic and took impecable care of this beauty. I'm sure he's lurking somewhere on this forum as well (don't know his screen name, but his real name is Elmer, if anyone knows him). I'm here in Marietta GA, and already looking at some much needed add-on's, particularly the chrome hard bag trim guards and tour pak rack. I love how this beauty rides. All the best with yours in TX!
