Anybody have any experience with these? I wear a half-helmet and these look like a really good option, but would like some feedback or reviews before I spend the bucks, if possible. http://wingstuff.com/pgroup_detail.php?categoryid=244&pgroupid=26740&goto=%2Fpgroup_list%2Felectronics%2F244_goldwing_Headset%2Fdes%2F

I've posted/boasted before about the M880's, and I'll stick to my choice. Just changed them out after 20K on the front and 18K on the rear. No issues whatsoever, and still had some decent tread life. I will admit that I prefer a softer tire for the mountain riding I do, such as the D404's, but you can't beat the overall performance of the M880 IMO. On our '03 H-D Softail, we run only the H-D wide whitewall Dunlop's. It's a Harley thing!

what kind of Oil and oil filter?
Bobby G replied to bikerjohn's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I'm an old fashioned believer of going with the OEM recommendation of Yamalube semi-synth 20W50 and their stock filter. My '99 RSV has never had anything else, and I change it out every 5K and it usually comes out with a golden hue to it. Never black or sludgy. If it ain't broke, don't fix it! -
I am a huge fan of the M880's for the RSV. Performance doesn't lie, and I've gotten excellent performance out of mine - - over 18K on the rear and 20K+ on the front. I'm a fan of the Dunlop 402's for my Softail, and the 404's for my VTX Retro, but for the RSV, I'll happily stay with the M880's.

Piece of cake to remove. I take my ShowChrome shorty off about every other week when I detail the bike, and it's a 5 minute job. Just be careful of the chrome trim that has to come off first. Once you know how it snaps on and off after the bolt removal, it gets really easy.
-
Nope, never had that happen, and hope never to have the experience! And my pressure is exactly what the tire calls for and what I've been running forever on my old Metzlers that, oh by the way, got better wear than most any other tire out there on the RSV. But like I said, opinions are like a$$holes - - everybody's got one!
-
Not sure what terrain you Metzler haters are riding on, but I am thrilled with the performance and wear on my 880's. Just changed out after getting over 21K miles on my last set. I ride solo most of the time, but even with the wife on the back, I run at 40 front and 42 rear with no problems whatsoever on my '99 RSV. The only other tire that even comes close to this kind of performance is the Dunlop 404. Personally, I think you guys who swear by the Avon's are nuts. But to each his own, I guess. Just sayin...

ShowChrome, shorty-fatty. 3 1/2" shorter and 4" wider. Lists for $129, but I got mine for $85 new on eBay. Love it! I'll never go back to the stock windshield. And I've yet to meet a Yami dealer that was worth a $hit about anything, or a Suzuki or Kawi dealer for that matter (oh wait, they are all the same dealer!)

Not having one under warranty, I couldn't tell you. But the tech at the factory I know says probably not, since they are a proponent of protective additives, including all the Yamalube stuff.

One thing that may mitigate the potential of "overusing" Motorkote is to let your oil drain for a very long time (hours if possible), including running a half quart of whatever oil you use as a "flush" before refilling and adding another dose of the 'Kote. I do this every time without fail, including a 20 - 30 min oil warm up, and you'd be amazed at how much additional used oil comes out with the flush that didn't drain out initially. I also rock the bike side to side several times to make sure it's all out of the nooks and crannies in the crankcase and pan. I know, "oil change basics 101", but I know a lot of guys that don't do this at all. Over time, it all adds up, and you can't argue with the results of a '99 RSV getting 48+mpg and running like it's brand new. Just sayin....
-
Not sure how I did it, but the infamous "whine" has all but disappeared! I screwed up on the last oil change about 2 weeks ago and re-added about 7 oz. of Motorkote after the change, when I should have skipped this change. But it looks like adding a second round of the stuff has eliminated the whine. I had the bike out all day yesterday and today in this beautiful GA weather - mid 60's and sunny for a change - and it is running perfectly. Got about 48 combined MPG's too. Amazing.

Had a major reflux problem in late October stemming from being about 35 lbs overweight, so I started the MediFast meal replacement plan (http://www.feelbetterfast.tsfl.com), and by Christmas I had lost 22 lbs. It's not a diet, but a way to understand how to throttle back on the things that make you hungry to begin with - - namely sugar and carbs. I eat 6 times a day, about every 2 1/2 hours (or there about), and eat only smaller portions of higher protein, low carb foods (meat, cheese, eggs, fish, nuts, etc.). I have one larger "lean & green" meal in the afternoon or evening. The trick is to keep your insulin pump at bay so you won't experience the spikes in hunger. I just needed to get off the sugar-based rollercoaster. I've not hit my goal weight yet, but I feel 100% better, look better, get lots of positive comments on my smaller belly, and really don't feel like I am dieting. The things I miss sometimes are beer (but I do enjoy one or two on the weekend), Reesee cups, Fretoes, really soft fresh bread, and fruit. But you can't lose the pounds unless you make a few sacrifices.

The *OFFICIAL* Gas Mileage Poll
Bobby G replied to Monsta's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Very interesting to see the variations in mileage that everyone gets. I've always been very happy that my good ol' '99 is getting such great overall mpg's under all general conditions - - 45+. Great milage and great tire wear on a well running RSV that still hauls ass whenever I want it to. No complaints here at all. -
'99 RSV Tire Size Discrepancy

Yes, the 880 Marathons. Here's a picture of the tread footprint: (Sorry, couldn't resist!) -
"24". The questions on all of the Constitutional Amendments really tripped me up.

'99 RSV Tire Size Discrepancy
Bobby G replied to Bobby G's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Maybe! LOL.... Actually, I did think that for awhile the odo's were way off, but we track them to the clicks ridden with the other bikes we ride with, including my wife's Softail, and they are all within .5 to 1 mile of each other on both the odo and the tripmeters. I think I just lucked out with a phenominal set of tires and a very well tuned bike. No other real explanation for it. The scoot goes in today for it's new rubber change out, and all of the fluids/filters get swapped out next week. The bank account is going to take a nice hit, but the bike will be ready for some serious riding in the beautiful mountains of GA, TN and NC! Let's go! -
Yamalube semi synth and some Motorkote in the crankcase every 2nd or 3rd oil change. Bike performance and outstanding milage bear out the results. Everybody has their preference, and this is mine. You asked!

'99 RSV Tire Size Discrepancy
Bobby G replied to Bobby G's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I even have the purchase and maintenance records from the previous owner to prove it. I check my tires all the time because I always expected that at any time the threads would start busting through, but it never happened. But I'm not going to tempt fate. I'm getting new rubber pretty soon, certainly before the nice weather shows up (hopefully soon!) -

Yes sir, that is the absolute God's honest truth. I am truly amazed. -
'99 RSV Tire Size Discrepancy
Bobby G replied to Bobby G's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Thanks for all of the great feedback. I had always run Dunlops on my previous bikes (VTX and Shadow ACE), but I bought this RSV from a retired Yami engineer who had it since new ('99), and he always ran Metzlers. When I got the bike last March, the tires had 18K on them, and since then I've run it almost 25K, and while they are getting a little thin on the center strip, they STILL have usable tread, especially in the front. The milage has been amazing on these tires, and I have experienced zero handling problems. I also get outstanding gas milage - - usually in the mid to upper 40's in all conditions. So while I appreciate the personal preferences toward Avon and Dunlop, I can't see fixing what isn't broke. I guess we'll see how this new set holds up. Thanks again! -
I got a quote today on new Metzlers for my '99 RSV. $140 for the front and $165 for the rear. Interestingly enough, the width of the rear is a 15, and the front is a 16. I've read quite a bit about many RSV riders switching to a more narrow front tire and wheel, but both my mechanic and my tire guy strongly advised against this due to the way the RSV is engineered compared to a similar size V-twin bike. Any comments about this from those who have made the move to a skinnier front wheel? I'd be interested in some feedback on this before I get the new rubber. Thanks!

Hey, I actually know the answer to some of these! Why is the sky blue? So we know where to stop mowing! Why do dogs eat grass? It's like Pepto Bismol for them. I have a few more too.... Why do we park on a driveway and drive on a parkway? Why can a door be ajar but a jar can't be a door?

Let's just steal Snappy's and screw them on to your RSV!

Windshield HEIGHT advice
Bobby G replied to ablumny's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
You might also try the 13" screen from ShowChrome. I am right at 6' tall, and can see over the top just fine. It's about 4" wider at the base then the stock screen - 31" in total, and I get no buffeting at all. I'll never go back to the stock screen. Here are some pics: -
Smely, don't you wish you could just unscrew the original antennea, buy the shorter stix and screw them on! This mod stuff is for the birds. LOL! I think I'll just keep my whips. Wish I were still in the Caribbean!
