Some new thoughts on clutch basket whine
Bobby G replied to straycatt's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
After all of this discussion - and it's all be good - here's what I've deduced: ~ The "whine" is a clutch gear design issue, and will vary in loudness and intensity based on a variety of factors, including overall wear and tear, heat, oil viscosity and the speed/RPM/gear you are in at any given point in time. Some "whines" are more noticeable than others, and even with a clutch basket change out, the "whine" has been known to return over time and use. Conclusion - it' there, and it's likely not going away completely with any corrective action. There is no known absolute fix or cure that's worked for most RSV owners on this board. Experimentation continues, including masking the sound, redirecting the sound (windshield adjustment?), alteration of the actual gearing, etc. ~ The "chirp" may be related to the clutch basket "whine" noise, but may also be related to the performance and condition of the final drive. There are reports that the "chirp" has been totally eliminated with repairs or modifications to the final drive. The "chirp" seems to be less of a reported problem than the "whine" in most RSV's, but is still an issue for some owners. As I do not have a "chirp" sound coming from my '99 RSV, but I do have a "whine", I will continue to monitor how folks are dealing with this issue. I can honestly say that I've lessened the "whine" coming from my '99 RSV with a change to a 20W50 full synthetic oil (Mobile 1) from the factory recommended Yamalube semi-synthetic, along with adding 6 oz. of Motorkote at every other oil change. So I'm inclined to think that I've done about all I can to rectify this situation. I may also try some experimenting with the windshield theory to see if any changes there will re-direct the sound away from me even more. Finally, there's my ultimate cure - - 97.1 FM (classic rock!) at 18 on the volume dial. -
Great suggestion. The catalog price is $49.99 + $7.49 shipping ($57.48 total). I found it on eBay for $45 + free shipping. May go ahead and pick it up.

Very sucky situation Wil. It's a very nice bike (I'm obviously very partial to the '99 RSV). Ditto what Craig said - - I hope you land something very soon so you can keep her.

I posed a similar question on the 2nd Gen Tech Talk forum the other day, and got some good feedback there as well, as I had mistakenly drained my 3+ year old battery by leaving the ignition in the on position last week for 3 full days. I'm not a fan of the "constant" trickle charging of batteries, but I can't imagine that keeping any battery, especially the newer sealed type, on a 1.5 amp slow charge maintenance charger can do any real long term harm. But to be on the safe side, I took my batt to Advance AP late yesterday to get a load test done, and it's in perfect condition, even after the full drain and recharge. The tech there, who seemed very knowledgeable in this area, said he would not be at all concerned with the performance of this batt under normal operating conditions. I took that to mean "run it normally, check it once a week or so, and maintain it when needed". Pretty simple.

Passenger Floorboards BUZZ
Bobby G replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I found and fixed the source of my buzz/rattle, but it was in the rear speaker housing, not the passenger floorboards. Not sure of a fix for the looseness in the spring mechanism other than what you've done, but I can see where this would drive you a little crazy.- 2 replies

Sorry Goose. It was at 12.8 a day after I took it off the charger. Sorry for the typo, but thanks for the good info!

All great feedback on this guys. I hears ya. Might just go with a new one before we head out. Just replaced the original one yesterday in my '05 F-150 that was working, but down to only 300 cranking amps when it should have 850! Situation averted. No sense taking a chance of the scoot crapping out in Mofn*, Florida! Got a cruise ship to catch up with! * (middle of f**king nowhere!)

Thanks Goose. I'm doing a full fluid change out this week, including coolant system flush, final drive and oil, so I guess I'll just haul the batt to Advance AP and get it checked just to be on the safe side. The meter said 12.1 volts this morning, so I think I'm OK, but as long as I'm doing everything else, what the hell! 2 weeks in the south FLA heat will be challenging enough without having a mechanical problem, so I'm prepping the best I can.

I've read the prior threads on this, but didn't find the answer to my question on those, so I'll throw it out on the table one more time: Aside from normal miliamp drainage and a not-so-great charging system on the RSV, does a full drain of the batt due to stupidity (yes, I left the key on for 3 days! ) do any serious permanent damage to the battery? I slow charged it back to full, and it's starting OK, but I'm preping to hit the road for a 1,700 mile trip in a few weeks, and don't need any battery issues en route. The batt is about 3 years old. I guess I could yank it and take it in for a load test at the auto parts place, but short of that, any opinions on this?

I already sit up plenty high in the saddle. How does sitting on a pad like this impact your seat height?

Yamaha is one of my clients. Some of my others in this industry are Suzuki, Polaris (Victory), BRP, Kawasaki and Arctic Cat. I can tell you that my senior level contacts at Yamaha assure me that there will only be a 2011 RSV if their Japanese planners at the factory feel they have reduced their existing inventory levels sufficiently to warrant the cost of ramping up production of the model. They've done a pretty good job of reducing overall inventory levels so far this year, but I'd give it another 90 days at least before that decision is made and anything is announced. The only member of the "big 4" that turned a profit last fiscal year was Suzuki, and that was despite a 45% drop in overall sales and employing very strict austerity measures. Yamaha had a bad year on the bottom line, as did Kawi and Honda, and that drives all decisions, not what customers want. So don't hold your breath for a 2011 RSV. If there are a lot of "new", unsold '09 and '10 units out there, it may not happen.

The wif and me are taking 3 days in early September to meander down to Ft. Laurderdale, stopping to visit some relatives along the way, and then boarding a cruise ship for a nice relaxing 5 day cruise to Grand Caymen and Cozumel. Then back on the scoots for a 2 day trip home, with a stop in St. Augustine. Gonna be hot but fun! Funny how everyone has had the same question of us: "How you gonna pack for a cruise on a bike?" I say "what, you never heard of duffel bags on the back seat?" Cagers. Gotta love 'em.

I agree with my long time tire guy (Ken's M/C Tires, Woodstock) - - plug it to get home, then pull it off and put a tube in it. You just don't want to take the chance of it blowing at any speed, let alone a high speed. How much is your life worth, and/or that of a passenger???

I too love my new seat, which is an '09 stock pillow top on my '99 RSV. I spent 14 hours on it last Saturday in very hot, sticky weather (106 heat index and periods of monster downpours), and had no butt issues at all when I got home. Glad to hear your investment was a good one for you.

It may truly be the most difficult part of being a free society that we must also endure the freedom of some to do and say things that make our blood boil. It's civics 101. The same principles of free speech that allow all of us the freedom to have forums like this also allow low life scum like the Phelps family to picket Heroes' funerals and burn the American flag. The courts have no choice but to rule in favor of the Constitution in these matters. All we can do is punch the wall, kick the dog, and stand with our backs to them while we hold our American flags in honor of our Heroes. If we can just find the strength to ignore them, they will continue to have a hard time getting their 15 minutes of fame on the Communist News Network (CNN).

Just changed out today to the Mobile 1 20W50 synth on the '99 RSV with 57K. Actually this was the second change with that oil from the Yamalube semi-synth, and there was no noticeable difference in performance. I get the Mobile 1 for about $9.50 a quart. I like it so I'll stick with it.
-
I did test #1 on synth oil with 2,700 miles on it, and it looks really good, according to this test method. I used the back of a standard business card. Pretty cool! file:///C:/Users/HPPAVI%7E1/AppData/Local/Temp/moz-screenshot.pngfile:///C:/Users/HPPAVI%7E1/AppData/Local/Temp/moz-screenshot-1.png

Finally got my long awaited luggage rack for the '99 RSV. Ordered from CruiserCustomizing.com for $84.95, including all hardware. It really is very nice, but very scary to install if you've never done something like that before. Once you start drilling holes in your truck lid, there's no going back! I followed all of the instructions to the letter, at least at first, but quickly found out that the 1/4" holes don't allow for any wiggle room to get the bolts lined up to the rack, no matter how exactly you measure and line them up. Due to the curvature of the trunk lid where the rack sits, I had to keep enlarging them a little at a time until I could start the bolts into the rack properly. They ended up being about 7/16ths in diameter, but the tapered billet washers are wide enough to cover these completely, as are the rubber mounts that keep out the water. I also added a little silicone gel to totally seal the holes, and some blue lock-tite to seal the deal. Very important to not over-tighten the bolts as I can see where the fiberglass/plastic will certainly crack in very short order. They just need to be slightly snug. All in all, not a very difficult install for anyone who is going to add this really nice rack, but like I said, a little scary making them holes! (I added a few pics. Hope you can see some of the detail.) Remember what Confusious said: "Measure, measure a thousand time - - but drill it only once"!

Kickstand Shortening
Bobby G replied to rumboogy's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Thread resurrected..... My '99 RSV seems to be leaning just a little more than it used to, and I'm concerned that the weight of the bike is taking its toll on the stand mount or the stand itself. It's especially bad when parked on anything less than totally level ground, and I have to keep a small 2X4 wood block with me to put under the stand to keep in more upright, which is a pain when remounting the bike. Anyone else have a kickstand problem like this? -
First LONG ride on my Venture
Bobby G replied to rumboogy's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I checked the temp here on Sunday (in north GA) when the ambient air temp read 92 in the sun. About 85 in the shade. The humidity level was about 70%, making the official heat index about 109. But the actual temp at 4pm coming off the road (GA400) was just a shade under 150! Couple that with the heat coming off your engine, and you can easily see why everything from your boots to your belt is just burning up. The only way to combat this is massive quantities of water, especially 24 hours before you head out, light protective clothing, and frequent stops. Ice water or anything really cold to your head, neck and wrists when you stop will also dramatically lower your overall body temp. Let's be safe out there! -
Plugged the AIS yesterday - - with a wire nut!
Bobby G replied to Bobby G's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I love duck tape. It's almost as big a miracle of modern science as velcro. Without duck tape, we'd have no McGuiver! It's a life saver, and a go-to tool in the absence of anything else to use. Is it permanent? Hell no. Exposed to the elements, it will break down over time. Is it messy? Hell yes. I hate the way it feels when you get that adhesive on your hands. But I do love it so. -
Speedometer 10% fast
Bobby G replied to Sandbagger's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
My speedo on my '99 consistently reads 6 mph faster then I'm actually going, according to both my truck and my wife's HD when they are following me on the highway. Versus the GPS, it's a 5 mph difference. It used to bother me a lot, but I just ignore it now. -
Plugged the AIS yesterday - - with a wire nut!
Bobby G replied to Bobby G's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
"Like this one - I wasn't going to respond at all because I was certain the OP didn't give a #$%@ about what I thought on his misguided decision, but then I got suckered in to adding a smart-assed comment on the value of Duct Tape, and it just grew from there." Hey Goose, great recap of this whole AIS thing (again!). Anyway, I apologize if I offended anyone sensibilities with my little "shortcut" in plugging the AIS using a tapered wire nut wrapped in a little bit of tape to make a snug, secure fit. But misguided? Come on, it ain't that bad of a mod on a component that is more like your appendix than your liver. (Your liver you need - - your appendix you don't, and is just God's little anatomical joke!) Hope you really don't think I don't give a #$%@ (hope I spelled it right!) about your advice. I do! You are a very knowledgeable guy on the RSV. Thanks! -
Two other utilities that I run that keep my PC's free of this stuff are CrapCleaner http://www.ccleaner.com, and AVG Anti-Virus (free version) http://www.avg.com. I update both at least every other week, and they really have made a difference in my PC performance.

Saddlebags Stuck
Bobby G replied to iron pony boyz's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Glad you got it open finally. I was going to suggest that you use a one foot long, 3/4 inch diameter wooden dowel, press it down on the latch button, and hit the other end with a rubber mallet a few times. This worked when mine jammed last year.
