Biker down - need some family help in knoxville!
Bobby G replied to Bobby G's topic in Watering Hole
*UPDATE* Sorry for the delay in these updates on Al "War Dog" Burns. Al was not able to continue his fight, and passed away on Sunday. The injuries were just too massive, and while fighting for his life, he also suffered a heart attack. Just too much to overcome. Al's remains were escorted from Knoxville to the funeral home in Lawrenceville GA yesterday by dozens of PGR and ALR riders. He will be buried on Friday morning in the National Cemetery in Canton GA. Hundreds of bikers are expected to provide a fitting escort for Al and his family to his final resting place. Thank you all for the prayers and the positive energy that flowed his way. Al is now at peace with his beloved wife, Tonya. -
Did I miss something here? Did somebody get gravel in their clutch line???

Here are the pics of Al's bike. Other then the right side hard bag getting torn off, the rest of the bike is completely intact. Hard to imagine. -
Biker down - need some family help in knoxville!

Here is this morning's update: Al is on a respirator as we all know, mainly due to the extensive fractures of his ribs (both front and back fractures). He is trying to fight the respirator by breathing on his own. So they've lowered it from 90% to 60% as of this typing. They have him medically comatose mainly because if he were awake, he'd be in serious pain. His injuries, I believe I reported them earlier are on the left side of his rib cage, ribs 1-8 are fractured, both front and back, on the right side, ribs 1-6 are fractured, both front and back. His orbital sockets are fractured, but maintained their location, so no surgery was needed for plates; his kidneys were bruised; and his C-1 vertebrae was fractured, but he was responsive to the foot tests done, so no paralysis. I firmly believe that God has decided that Al's work on this Earth is not done. He's battered and bruised, but still with us and each day that goes by that he is still with us gives us more hope that he will survive all of this. Having received photographs of his Ultra Classic, it seems the brunt of the damage is, as you sit on it, his right saddle bag was torn off, but the saddlebag guards are still there, other than that, not a scratch on the bike. I picked his daughter, Stephanie, up from the airport yesterday where she flew in from California. His son Jake will be arriving today. The donations that have been sent in thus far are gratefully appreciated by the family. They will be moving to an extended stay type hotel today since there are so many family members present. It is also located closer to the hospital. No flowers can be sent to Al as he is still in Surgical Intensive Care Unit. Arrangements for Al's wife are being made as I type this. Al's daughters have asked her children if they would like the PGR present for the memorial service as she will be cremated. In lieu of flowers they have asked that donations be made to a specific animal shelter in her honor, but I have not been given the name of the animal shelter as of yet. So hang tight on that. I will update you as soon as I hear anything more. Deb "BigRedTrk" McKay East Tennessee Assistant State Captain Knoxville, TN Thanks to everyone for their continued support and prayers for the War Dog. The biker community certainly does step up when one of us goes down! Bobby -

*UPDATE* Al remains in critical condition, but the family is there with him and they are surrounded by many PGR, ALR and AmVets members (and a few VR members as well). Here's the latest info from our PGR State Capt. on how to help this family out if you'd like: We have a donation fund set up for Al's family. They have been in need of accommodations, food and transportation. I have to tell you I have been in contact with Annette the Tn SC since I found out about Al and his wife last night. She and her team have been working tirelessly to help Al and his family. They have helped transport family from the airport to the hospital. Helped get and pay for hotel rooms, even got a hotel discount for the family. They've been visiting, staying with and comforting the family at the hospital. Provided gas money for Al's active duty son-in-law to go to Ft Campbell and back to the hospital. They've solicited help and funds from Tn PGR, ALR and local clubs. Now they've set up a PayPal account to accept donations. They've been amazing. Thank you to SC Annette Robeck, ASC Deb McKay and Randy 'Sportypig' Hall. Donation information: Paypal: Send payments to alburnsfund@comcast.net For those that don't use PayPal, mail donations to the address below Al Burns Fund c/o Patriot Guard Riders of TN 5948 Port Yakima Ct. Hermitage, TN 37076 Make checks payable to Patriot Guard Riders of TN. Checks will be deposited into the account. Continue to pray for Al. He's still in bad shape and needs all the help he can get. Thanks to all for the continued prayers for this great American rider. - Bobby -

Thanks for calling Jim. See the update above. Looks like the immediate hotel needs are covered, but anything else you find out on site tomorrow would be helpful. -

*UPDATE* Here is the latest from Dreamcatcher, the TN state PGR Captain: No Boundries goes for our brothers and sisters as well.....We have been there with the family all night, have them in a hotel, and if all goes well, there will be a paypal account active by morning to assist them for anyone who is able to assist. Al is not out of the woods yet, but our prayers are being heard! He has been upgraded to critical....knee mail is continuing from TN.... Al's family has several of our contact numbers, we don't want to intrude, but they know we are there if they need us....they are also part of our extended family... As soon as I know how to make a contribution to this fund to assist the family, I'll pass it on for anyone who might be interested in helping. Until then, please keep the prayers for War Dog and his family coming. This is a terrible tragedy they are now dealing with, one that could happen to any of us at any time. Thanks to my VentureRider family...... Bobby -
My PGR buddy Al "War Dog" Burns and his wife Tonya were in a very bad motorcycle accident in Knoxville yesterday, and are in critical condition at University Hospital. Tonya was pronounced dead at the scene. Their kids are either there or are en route, and they may need some assistance with housing, since they are all from out of town and none of them are very well off financially (recent job losses and one who just had cancer surgery). If anyone is aware of some very inexpensive housing/hotel options in that area, please PM me and I'll pass it on to them. Please keep Al in your prayers. Here is the article I found about the accident: http://www.wbir.com/news/article/137882/2/One-dead-one-injured-after-Monroe-Co-motorcycle-accident Thanks.

I was in Vegas for the launch of Kawi's newest products this past week, and this one was kind of a dud, IMO. It's target market is the solo touring rider with some bucks to spend, and I think they will gravitate more to H-D or Victory anyway for a V-twin bike. The styling is nice, but I think they came up short in some key areas - no passing lamps, side opening bags (I personally hate em), and the stock seat is down right aweful. They offer a gel seat, but that one is hard as a rock too. The home run intro new product was (strangely enough) their new 300HP jet ski. It's a monster. They signed Clint Boywer (#33 car) to do the endorsement of it, but it was intro'd a week after he was nailed for 150 points in the Chase for cheating. Talk about bad timing!!

That's pretty funny! A buddy of mine had his Midnight for about 3 months before I showed him the same switch. Quite the "duh" moment!- 32 replies

So sorry you had this experience Gene, but having had a very similar one about 7 years ago, I can tell you first hand that you were meant to be there for a reason. You might not grasp the full reality of what this is for a long time, but you will. (For some perspective, here's my story - - I swerved to avoid a head on collision, and as a result the car behind me caught the direct hit and the teenage driver was killed instantly. The driver of the oncoming car, and male in his 20's, was trapped in his car and eventually died from his injuries. I worked for 10 or 15 minutes to free him but to no avail. I was crying and screaming the whole time. I'm sure I was in total shock. I'm alive and that little girl is gone, and for years I've labored over whether I could have survived it in my larger truck than she could have in her little Honda.) Anyway, continue to talk it out, and I also suggest that you write about it in a journal of some kind. This kind of experience can and will really shake you up for awhile. Anyway you cut it, it's trauma, and like all traumas, you have to take it very seriously and get the help you need to get through it. EMT's and emergency personnel are trained in this stuff, and most still suffer from occasional trauma and need to be treated. All good thoughts coming your way, and I hope you get right with this soon. It certainly does put one's life in perspective, doesn't it? God bless..... Bobby

The wife and I took a ride up through the N. GA, NC and TN mountains yesterday, and it was fabulous. The weather was awesome, no traffic, clear sunny skies, wide open roads. Gonna keep this in mind for later in Oct. when the colors are at full peak of their changeover. Some of our traveled roads included US19, US129 (the Dragon), US64, Foothills Pky., SR73, and US441. Traversed the Chattahoochee Nat. Forest, the Nantahala, the Smokies and the Cherokee Nat. Forests. Bought some nice boots at the outlet in Pigeon Forge, and dodged an unexpected rain event by heading west through Maryville TN and back south to the ATL. A little scary coming down US411 at night with all the bugs and threat of deer bolting out of the blue (guess my deer whistle worked! LOL!), but we got back to the ranch 13 hours after we started in one piece and happy we stole the day. Can't wait to do it again! Here's some pics.

I have the adapter, but how do you eliminate the ear pads without also eliminating the mic?
-
I've been in northern MN all week, and just got back to the ATL today. Man, I am so glad I wasn't on two wheels up there, especially yesterday. Took 4+ hours to drive from Grand Rapids back down to Minneapolis, and that was in a Suburban! But the temperature change from GR to MSP was amazing - - 48 when I left, and 72 when I got to the hotel! Glad to be home in hot-Lanta.
-
OK, I'm getting rid of the deer whistle, but I'm going to hang some strands of garlic to the trunk rack! *ROTFLMAO*
-
All wise and sound suggestions. We have one stretch of I-575 north of Cherokee County GA (35 miles north of ATL) that is particularly dangerous in the Fall with deer, but we try like hell not to ever ride that route after dark. Otherwise, we're not too inundated with them in the ATL metro area. Just up in the north GA mountains.

I loved this part of the article: The RMEJ article ends with a citation from the New York Times NATIONAL that describes an alternative and creative way to frighten deer and other animals off the road and out of the path of oncoming vehicles. The NYTN articles explained: Before he discovered deer whistles, a supervisor for an Arkansas utility came up with his own plan to scare deer off the dark country roads. He taped the barking of his neighbor's dogs, rigged an amplified speaker to the front of his truck and then broadcast the tape as he cruised down highways. But he abandoned the scheme, amid concern that the barking was not only scaring deer, but awakening residents of southern Arkansas.

I have done this in the past if the oil that comes out is particularly black and gunky for any reason. Always interesting to see what color the quart of flush oil comes out looking like!
-
My strategy exactly! Why else would I put such rediculous crappola on my otherwise beautiful motorcycle?? :moon:
-
I guess this falls into the category of "it may not help, but for $7 bucks, it can't hurt"! Everybody ride safe out there, especially at night out in the country where Bambi lives!
-
Fall is upon us, and with it getting darker earlier and with our white tail friends getting ready to run amok, I added a few very inexpensive safety items that I picked up at Wally World today. The LED lights are mounted on both right and left side saddle bag rails and can be solid or blinking for additional visibility from the sides at night. They take 2 AAA batteries each and will run for 400- 500 hours continuous before needing new batts. They cost $8.95 each. I took the bike out for a quick ride tonight, and man can you be seen! The chrome deer whistle is mounted under the right side bag to catch the max amount of wind, and is barely visible, and is also removable by sliding it off the stick-on holder. They came 2 to a package for $7.95, so I mounted the other one under the right side foot pad on the wife's Harley. For that price, I'll probably get two more for the left side of each bike. Can't be too careful this time of year.

BareFoot Willies Cup Holder on the Passenger Grab bars
Bobby G replied to Sleeperhawk's topic in Watering Hole
Here's a picture of what I was talking about. The wife hates it, so it's coming off tomorrow. -
No, it wouldn't keep a 1/2 qt. EVERY time - - I think what he meant was that because of the "pooling" in the one area of the pan, it keeps a 1/2 qt (or less) ALL the time. It's not a cumulative 1/2 qt. It's just an "all the time" 1/2 qt. Quite honestly, it's really not a full half quart. But between what's left in the pan, what's in the old filter, what's in the clutch, and what probably gets a little burned up, that would account for what doesn't drain out of the plug. And I just cleaned the K&N's, and they were fine. No oil in the airboxes.

Can you direct this lameoid to the correct screw on the correct cover? Never did this before. Thanks.

BareFoot Willies Cup Holder on the Passenger Grab bars
Bobby G replied to Sleeperhawk's topic in Watering Hole
Just picked this up today and installed on the right side grab bar, but you have to angle it in toward the seat or else the saddle bag lid won't open. Not sure I like that situation or the way it looks. I know my better half won't like it, so it'll probably be coming off. I'll save it for the handle bar for when I take a long ride again somewhere. Not a huge investment at $6.95.
