Lugging at acceleration
Eddie Fulmer replied to jaho's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
That rev limiter really caught me by surprise when I first found it!!! For a second or 2 I thought bad thoughts. Now I know though. I'm still bad to lug my bike in 5th but I never roll the throttle hard when in high gear. Well, except when I'm really letting the breeze blow by. LOL- 16 replies

FWIW Everybody has an opinion on this I'm sure. Mine would be to buy the J&M economy set. I've tried several different brands and this seems to work well for me. Granted I'm probably not able to tell a lot of difference in the musically quailty of a set. However these sound great to me.

I think this is a mistake they are making. The way I see it they could actually be liable. You should bring this to the attention of the Chief and see what his thoughts are. Lt Eddie Fulmer

Iginition noise through audio system
Eddie Fulmer replied to Midrsv's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
NOt to long ago I had the "noise in the headset" problem. I couldn't figure it out and nothing seemed to help. You could tell it was in the engine cause when the engine was revved up the noise would follow suit. However I hit the starter one day and everything went black. Then hit it again and my bike started right up. I checked the battery connections and found that the ground was a little loose. I tightened it up and to my surprise the noise in the headset went away. I never thought that would have been the cause. I've had no problems since and my 99 RSV has run great ever since, with nothing but good tunes coming out of the radio/mp3. -
I just left my seat unbolted. Just remember to tie it down if you ever have to trailer it. I know this never happens. Don't really know why I even mentioned it!! LOL:Avatars_Gee_George: I do like mine loose cause I can get to the good stuff undreneath easily.

Thanks for all the work you do keeping this site up and running. It doesn't go un-noticed.

Yup you are right.. The best thing is to just get away and let it go. HOwever the older I get the less I'm able to do that. Just the other day a young punk with his hat turned backwards and a smirk on his face pulled over into me, kept coming as I was blowing the horn, but I was able to avoid him, barely. At the next stop I wound up right beside him and he wouldn't look at me at all. Even though I was giving him a good talking to and his window was cracked( I know he heard the horn). Maybe I should've shoved my pistol between the cracked window and see how well he would talk to me then. You just can't get any respect these days!! However all that being said I do pretty good at just thinking well they must have just had a bad day and moving on. God loves them nutty people too you know..
-
I would make sure that you can talk when the rear transmit button is pushed. IF I'm not mistaken when the transmit button is pushed both mics are hot. You could just have a bad cord or something simple like that. Swap helmets and see what happens.

Welcome Dan!! I think your story is much like a lot of us "older" newbies around here. I know you'll have many comfortable miles on the RSV. Bought my first one at a garage sale several years. It was a 1983 Venture. Then I found a deal and let the 1st gen go. Now ride a 99 and have never been happier with a bike.

Cylinder not firing
Eddie Fulmer replied to BigShell's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
first thing first..put in a new plug!!! I've had this happen before and it was just the plug. Also drain the offending carb bowl. One of my cylinders went dead and after I drained the bowl it worked perfectly. I didn't see anything come out that wasn't supposed to be there but, evidently there was. I'd try to catch all the gas that you drain out and take a look at it. I didn't and probably missed what was in there. In doing this you will remove any water or particles that might inhibit gas from getting to the cylinder. Good luck. -
How do I know if I have a bad rear shock?
Eddie Fulmer replied to a topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I beg to differ with you on the hand pump. I have a little progressive hand pump and it will put any amount of pressure that I want in the shock. It also doesn't loose any air when you take the connection off. Most other types of devices do loose air and therefore you don't really keep the pressure you want in it. The capacity is so small in the shock that it is easy to put to much in if you use a high pressure line to do it. I ride mostly solo and run it at about 36lbs. -
What's the best tires?
Eddie Fulmer replied to adventurer 08's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Venoms!!! Just changed my rear tire today. Put the stock size venom back on there. Got almost 13K out of it and could have gone a little more. I have the "slim" tire on the front and really like it better too. Looks like I"ll get maybe 20K out ot it. Good luck. -
I found a loose ground on my battery and that fixed/repaired it. I hope you can have the same luck.
-
I had one cylinder go dead on me on my 83. The only thing I did was open the fuel bowl drain and out came some water. When I got good looking gas out of it I shut it off. Then got on and off I went with the problem cured. Just be sure to follow the KISS principle. Keep It Simple Stupid.

Need a little help.
Eddie Fulmer replied to SaltyDawg's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
You won't find anything just doing a ounce over. You won't know if the switch is bad by turning it on and off. Everything will power up except the bike won't run. You had best bypass the switch or replace it or it'll leave you stranded somewhere. When mine went out it did exactly like you are saying. I could wiggle it a little and I'd be OK. However, when I was out of town one day the little wiggle trick didn't work. I had, however, run 2 wires under the seat that I could plug together that would bypass the switch. If I hadn't done this I could have been spending the night where I didn't want to. I replaced the switch but still left the bypass wires there. I got the switch and all hardware from buckeye performance. Rick, who runs the place, knows the venture and can really help you out here. My bike was out of warr and I got all the parts, kept my original key, for I think around $120 or so. If you have a dealer do it you will have to keep 2 keys with you as you will now have a new ignition switch key. If I can be of any help give me a holler on this. Good luck. -
One thing you might try to check the front wire is simply connect to the passenger wire. If that one works you know at least where the problem is. I've had good luck with the J&M sets. and agree about the chatterbox stuff. I had one new J&M that had an earpiece that was bad and I sent it back for a replacement with no problems. Good luck. I've had nothing but good reports on the RSV CB radio. Everyone says it sounds great.

Audio problem with back speakers
Eddie Fulmer replied to gdebruin123's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Yamahamer, You are a brave man. I hope yo lady doesn't read this!! LOL Merry Christmas.. -
To protect the rim I use a cut up tennis ball. It's cut in 4 pieces and put where ever you use the tire tool. I also run a piece of all thread through the axle hole and "mount" the rim to my workbench. This really helps. A work of caution though.. You may have friends that want to come over and "watch" you change their tires. This has always been fun for me. IF they take them off their bike it only takes a short while to make them happy.
-
I guess each to his own. I rather enjoy changing my tires myself. I bought some motorcycle tire tools from JC Whitney and found it to be something I can certainly do myself. The only hard part is breaking the bead. They make a tool for that but I made my own. I assume you are wanting to cahnge your Venture tires. The ones with spokes are easier to break. Good luck.

If it hasn't already your 99 will leave you stranded!! Don't wait for the switch to go out completely replace it now!! You can do the job yourself and swap the key part out easily. You will need a drill to do it as the screws are anti theft and need to be drilled out. I did mine in about an hour or so. The best place to find the switch is Buckeye performance and the number is 513-779-2447. I buy all my parts from this guy. He will take the time to help you and send all parts needed to replace the defective switch. The old switch has been updated and you will recieve the new one. They look the same but the contacts have been beefed up. If you would like to talk to me about it you may give me a call at 205-242-0950 Good luck. Eddie Fulmer

If the socket thing is to hard that looks a lot like a P clamp you would get from an electrical supply store.

On the nuvi 350 when you use the mp3 player and run it into the sound system. When you are listening to the player do the direstions play through the headset or what? Does the music stop and then you hear the nice lady in the gps tellingyou where to go? I've been unable to find that out. So if you have on please help me on this. Thanks.

I have the Avons and I do have a little wobble around 35-40mph. I put these tires on and It was perfect but developed the wobble after about 5-6,000K. Still handles wonderfully though. ???
