  1. It is called a 2018 because it will not be for sale until the start of the 2018 season...
  2. Don, my concern is for your health and well being!!! Don't over work yourself, the last thing Eileen would need would to be a widow...
  3. Ummm, your ignition switch is about to **** the bed?? Take your battery to Auto Zone and have it load tested for free...
  4. For me, it makes my left hand just as relaxed as my right, it eliminates the "death grip" cramps on that side as well. I just find it relaxing and comfortable... Rather than squeezing on the left, I just lay my palm on it!
  5. I played with mine a bit. Sorry, I had a set but gave them away a few years ago...
  6. G&V, I use two, one on each side!
  7. Young Blood, there is a circumstance that may be coming into play for you right now. If the Stator was overheated and the varnish was weakened, it may still insulate while cold but as it heats up it shorts out!! Try what I suggested when the bike is warmed up...
  8. No fork brace that I know of. Well, if you put on a different rim, I guess you can rule out wheel bearings unless you did not put in new bearings on the Strat rim. Here's a thought, I would check the air pressure in both front shocks and make sure they are equal. If there is a difference in psi between the two, that may or may not cause oscillations, but pressure difference tends to make the bike feel squishy or wobbly going over bumps and causes the front end to slightly pull to one side over bumps...
  9. I would suspect the Stator first, especially on an '83 if the oil cooling kit was never installed on it! The kit is the large bolt in the center of the Rotor that has a hole in the center and a curved pin that helps splash oil onto the stator for cooling. This was a design flaw on the '83s and early '84s that this kit fixed. Due to improper cooling, the stators were failing prematurely. Anyway, what you need to properly troubleshoot your stator is to find the connector from the stator which is about halfway up the frame. By the way, this connector is a failure point from corrosion on all First Gen Ventures, and many have eliminated this connector and hard soldered the wires. Anyway, disconnect the connector, and with your voltmeter on AC volts, start the bike up and monitor the AC voltage on all 3 combinations of the wires. Label the 3 wires as A, B, and C. At idle, all 3 combinations (A to B, A to C, and B to C) you should see a low AC voltage, probably around 10 volts or so on each combination, and they should all be approximately the same, within a tenth of a volt or so. As you increase the RPM's of the bike, each of those readings should increase their voltage uniformly! You should expect to see closer to 100 volts at say around 5000 rpm to 6000 rpm. You may only see around 70 volts but that should be OK as long as all 3 stay close to each other in value. Also, before you start the bike, you might want to read the DC resistance with the connector disconnected and the bike turned off. All three readings should be very close to each other. You also want to read each wire to ground, you should see infinity ohms, anything less indicates a shorted winding to ground. If your stator checks out OK, a quick check of your charging system is to start the bike, then disconnect the positive lead from the battery. The bike should keep running if everything is right with your charging system. The Rectifier/Regulators on the First Generation Ventures rarely fail! That does not mean that they never fail, it just means it is rare for them to fail. You may want to examine the connector to the R/R as they too can get corroded. I would also take your battery to your local Auto Zone where they will load test it for free!! Just because a battery charges up to a nice 13.2 volts does not necessarily mean the battery is good. A bad cell in the battery will cause it to not be able to deliver the energy it is supposed to under load...
  10. Been using them for years and love them!!!
  11. OK, today I will talk about Wednesday evening and Thursday. As I mentioned above, the first official day of the Rally is Thursday, but that should not stop anyone from being an early bird! In the past, there have always been some campers on Wednesday night, and sometimes we will even have a campfire that evening and music from the sound system the same as we have every night at the rally. The crew will be over there Wednesday later in the afternoon decorating the stage, setting things up, placing the chairs, etc. We will probably have dinner together somewhere. Speaking of which, the old "Hearth" restaurant is now open and running as a Mexican restaurant called the Fiesta Bamba! We have eaten there several times and find it to be very good and very reasonable prices! Unfortunately, they do not serve breakfasts there, but there is an excellent place for breakfast right around the corner from the site called Strawberry Fields. All right, getting to Thursday. Tee shirts will go on sale that day. There are a limited number available just like last year with an assortment of sizes and cost a mere $10 per shirt. They will be available for the duration of the rally but when they are gone, they are GONE! Tickets for Saturday's BBQ dinner will also go on sale that day, and all tickets MUST be purchased by Friday evening! No ticket, no eats! Now, if there are members that are not planning on getting there before Saturday, drop me a PM with the number of tickets needed and I will front the money and hold the ticket for you. I am aware that there are actually a couple of you that actually participate in the great American pastime of working so I get it if you aren't coming until Friday night or Saturday morning. There is a Dinner Ride scheduled for Thursday afternoon to the East Eden Tavern with Motorcycle Tom and Frogger as the ride Captains. I'm not positive on this but I believe kickstands up (if you have them) is at 4:30 PM. The ride should take 45 minutes to an hour. This place has excellent food and good prices!! There may be an impromptu local ride after lunch if there is any interest. There will also be a list of local attractions and things to do if anybody is interested in Venturing (pun intended) out on their own. Thursday evening there will be PA music around the campfire where we can all swap stories while we enjoy liquid refreshments, and any munchies you just happen to bring with you. There may be marshmallows available for those who cut themselves a stick from the forest close to the site! The PA shuts down at 11:00. Hope to see many of you either Wednesday evening or Thursday!!
  12. Yup!! Non-running '83 with all of its known issues is a parts bike fer sure, and I would not pay much over $300 for it (even though parted out you could get over $1000).
  13. So now you have to ask yourself, how did the carbs get that far out of wack?? Did you have your bike serviced somewhere that you should never go back to?? It is normal for the carbs to be just a wee little out of tune due to normal vibrations but not to require the amount of screwing you stated!!
  14. Yipes!! The WNY Rally is less than a month away!!! But fear not, there is still time to sign up, but don't put it off any longer! http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?125386-Western-NY-Northeast-Regional-Rally-2017!!-August-17-August-20 If you are still on the fence about coming, get off the fence and get on the wagon!! This is quite possibly THE best Venturerider event of the year!! In the next few days, I will outline all of the activities for every day. For those not familiar with the event, it starts Thursday, Aug 17 and goes to the following Saturday night/Sunday morning. Camping is free, and there are a couple of very inexpensive motels literally walking distance from the event. The early bird campers start showing up on Wednesday. There are toilet facilities at the campsite, but no showers but you can sponge bathe using the sinks in the restrooms. There is a refrigerator available to keep your perishables intact (and your beer cold). There are rides scheduled for every day and a list of alternate activities and places for those that want to do their own thing. Thursday we have a dinner run scheduled. Friday there is a day trip, and in the evening we have our dinner and raffle. This year's Grand prize is valued in excess of $200, and you never know, there may be another prize as well! There will also be a raffle or two, all to help pay for the band on Saturday evening! Friday evening is our theme based music and dancing time. This year's theme is "Patriotic Country!" Saturday morning is the famous Sprague's Maple Farms breakfast run! There is a BBQ dinner scheduled as always and costs a mere $10! Following the dinner is musical entertainment with a live band! Sunday morning is pack it up and clean up day, and anyone wishing to attend Church is more than welcome to join us at Yorkshire Free Methodist Church at 10:30, all are welcome, or if you choose to find your own denomination there are several in town from Catholic to Baptist and non-denominational and others! So, sign up!!! All are welcome! This year we are also extending our invitation to the local PGR riders and our local American Legion Riders of which I am a member of both. We really need all who are attending the BBQ to sign up as we really do need an accurate count prior to Friday...
  15. Not only that but some schools teach "alternate sexual lifestyles" as being normal and acceptable...
  16. Yes, my gut feeling is that with the lower voltage, it finally dropped to a level where the computer was not seeing any right voltages and threw out codes interpreting the lower voltages as failure symptoms. You will probably be good to go with a new alternator and possibly a new battery if needed. You may want to head to Auto Zone or a similar place and have them clear all the error codes now present on your computer...
  17. Check where the "Fade" is set on the radio controller. People have changed the radio out but there are some issues to address. The radio needs to be a Marine grade radio. You will lose your intercom and CB radio functions unless you use the marine grade radio as a stand alone with its own separate speakers. Speaking of speakers, the very best thing to do is replace those under-performing stock speakers with some good coax 4" speakers. There are several options for these from Polk, Kenwood, etc. They will sound sooo much better! Problem being, the audio system itself is a little anemic so it sounds best in a parking lot and not while riding... As far as the exhaust goes, the poor man's fix is to simply drill small holes in the back area around the actual exhaust opening until you reach the desired sound level. That back area surrounding the actual exhaust opening is really where the baffle is located. The exhaust travels from the inlet to the rear area and then back up to the front via the baffles then out the exhaust, or something like that... WELCOME ABOARD!!!
  18. Pucster, you never cease to amaze (and amuse) me!! I wonder how many people picked up on the fact you parked your Venture next to a Venture on Pt 7...
  19. Took me about a half a year to get used to a CPAP and then a VPAP but nowadays I can't sleep WITHOUT my "Dream Machine"
  20. You may be served better NOT using premium gas as it burns slower and the engine may not run properly with it...
  21. Back in its prototype days, the swash plate actuators for the V-22 Osprey had an issue with the plating on the center-shaft which was causing leakage UNDER the plating! The plating would develop flaws and the oil would literally seep under the plating and some out in another area. Of course, the 5000psi operating pressure had something to do with that! We replaced a lot of shafts on the test birds with new process plating shafts via recall...
  22. Just for S&G try new plugs, which in some cases should be a yearly thing anyway. Use NGK's. Also, find the "how-to" and check out your spark plug caps as you could be losing some spark inside them...
  23. With a big bore V-Twin I don't think you would want to rev much higher without risking it flying apart! Keep in mind the mass of those two big pistons as opposed to the mass of our smaller pistons. The displacement is a lot more cc's with half the number of pistons, so obviously, the bore is going to be a lot bigger...
