  1. Actually, I found out this last February with my new car that plugs are illegal in NY state now! Myself I wouldn't trust a plug on a motorcycle tire, you only have 2 wheels contacting the ground! It would be better to pull the tire and put a vulcanized patch on the inside IMHO...

  4. That is absolutely one beautiful Hannigan you have there, Godlover!!! Actually, I sort of think that was owned by a former member here but I can't remember the screen name. I kind of remember the black rims. At one time there was three or four Raspberry and Creme Hannigans on the site and I think one of them was from your State... I'm thinking you're really going to enjoy it!!! If you end up deciding the rear brakes need improving contact me, I did a complete conversion to stock Honda CRX rear brakes which give you twice the pad size over those Ducati Monster brake pads Hannigan uses and bigger rotors as well. I had to make up my own design mounting plate to adopt a larger master cylinder which is needed to power the larger Honda calipers. I used a Wilwood master cylinder and modified it to fit. I now have tons of stopping power! Of course, I also did the well known front brake conversion as well using R1/R6 4 piston calipers and the 14mm master cylinder which is a plug and play conversion. You will find with trikes the front tire wears out very fast! One improvement is to use a rear tire of the proper size and mount it backward on the front. Many of us have looked into a car tire of the proper size with little success. Someone suggested a sidecar tire but finding one in the right size is difficult. This issue is true for all trikes, it has to do with the tire literally scraping when you turn, motorcycle tires are designed to lean, and on a trike, they don't do that! Once again enjoy that absolutely beautiful Hannigan!!!
  5. Dave, yes, the coil wires and coils are 1 piece! Actually, if it becomes an issue, I would suggest converting to Coil Over Plugs! I'm pretty sure you can just replace the caps on 2nd gen... Coyote, the usual culprit of backfire on decel is something wrong with the air injection system...
  6. Great to hear about your progress!! When you installed a new front tire, did you go with a smaller (130) size? It does improve the low-speed handling as does sliding the front forks about 1/2" past the top which lowers the front... As far as plugs go, they seem to run best with the NGK plugs. If you spend the extra for the Iridium ones they will last longer. Also, you need to check the plug caps as well. Inside there is a disc, a spring, and a resistor element. With age, they get corrosion on them and it affects your spark!
  7. You might also want to disassemble the speedometer and make sure it didn't get too much grease in it. Basically, the speedometer is in actuality a voltmeter and the cable drives a voltage generator. The faster the cable spins, the more voltage is produced. There was/is an issue with the odometer part of the speedometer assembly where the gears driving the odometer get messed up and then it jams. Eventually the odometer drive breaks and the speedometer functions again...

We were cleaning out some junk drawers and found Becky's old camera, and I pulled the memory card out in preparation for donating the camera and found a few pictures from the International Rally in Dogpatch, AK so I thought I'd share a couple of them. From what I remember, the tee shirt that was signed was left behind at the facility to join other tees on display from other organizations. The ferry ride was from one of the rides. 2009 was the first year that we had the 2nd Gen and it is in one of the pictures in the middle... Let's see who remembers who...

  16. Try Pinwheel in Ohio, they have stripped down many RSV's. Myself I think their prices are a little too high, but they are an honest and reputable scrap yard...
  17. Reuse them?? Two words, HELL NO!!! Once a gasket has been compressed for any length of time, it takes what is known as a SET. That means it is permanently distorted! This goes for "O" rings as well! When I was working in the aircraft flight control industry, it was a given to always replace the o rings every time a piece of used hardware was disassembled. I have seen many an o ring transformed into a flat ring...
  18. Well, then, welcome back, YZ Ernie! Can't say as I remember your screen name, but back then this site was a LOT more active! Yes, the site has been through a lot of changes, and for the last year or so it has been slowing down. Many of us diehard VR members are hoping that the 3rd Generation Venture will bring back some life to the site! As I mentioned, I certainly appreciate your straightforward outlook on the G3. I agree it is a very attractive bike with a lot of great technology and creature comforts, the kind of things that makes a great touring bike great! Like many others, though, we were hoping for a detuned VMax engine just like the original Venture had! The 1st Generation Venture was light years ahead of the competition when it was released with the '83 Royale. The point being, the Venture was, is, and hopefully will always be specifically a TOURING bike, the kind you get on and ride for hours and hours and expect it to be reliable with great longevity! It's not necessarily designed as an off-road machine nor is it a cafe racer or crotch rocket. Surprisingly, the 1st Generation was a very fast and nimble touring bike, whereas the 2nd Generation was a little slower and not as nimble, but was and is one of the most comfortable touring bikes out there! Hopefully, the 3rd Generation will prove to be even more comfortable touring bike and regain some of the handling and speed that was lost with the 2nd Generation. (I own both so I feel I have the right to comment on both Generations) As far as the cost, well, my '09 "S" model ran me $17,300 new but I was given an exceptional deal on it from our local dealer. Around the same time, a fully loaded automobile ran around $30,000 or less. Last February my fully loaded Impala retailed for over $41,000 by comparison! The point being, we need to think in today's dollars, not 10 years ago. Based on what it has, I really do not think the RETAIL price of the '18 is out of line with our present economy and what the bike includes. Of course, not that many people pay full retail, my Impala cost me around $39,000... I, for one, look forward to reading your reports in the future!!!
  19. Yup, read it, Pucster!! I found it to be a very positive and informative write-up! At first, I thought that he was a former Harley rider who found out how superior Yamaha was, but then as I read further I see he had an '05 RSV so I'm saying to myself, hmm, this guy should already know about Ventures and know how more responsive the V4 is over the V Twin! So, that being said, I was very receptive to his comments on its performance! I haven't ridden one yet, so I am reserving my judgment until I do so. Like most of us, I was taken aback with it being an air-cooled belt driven V Twin. I can't argue about there being less loss of power to the rear wheel with belt drive, but I am concerned with the longevity of them versus shaft drive. The guy lives in California, so he will have some type of judgment concerning heat in the summer, as long as it hasn't been THAT long since he rode water-cooled. So, I am waiting for further comments from our new member, and patiently waiting for other new 3rd Generation Venture members to sign in...

  22. '86 - '93 is the same animal! All MK2 Ventures are the same except for some minor differences primarily in the front forks, and the ignition system. The clutches are the same...
  23. Hmm, that's a tough one, Ed! I have a Progressive shock for my '84 but Goldie is still under reconstruction. I'm going to just arbitrarily set it around 1/2 way up which may be way too stiff. The problem being it is just like predicting which dampening and air pressure to run the stock setup. It all depends on the load on the bike as well as the rider's personal preference to how he/she wants the bike to respond... I'm thinking it will be a lot of tweaking before I find the right setting for MY preference! Maybe someone else who has the Progressive shock on their 1st Gen will sound off.
