Has anyone had to run over truck tire?
1 - UP replied to roadwarrior's topic in Safety and Education
On October 4th I was on my way back from Indiana. I was south of Austin, Tn. riding in the center lane behind an 18 wheeler. I had cars on both sides of me. The 18 wheeler ran over a pice of tire about 12"-18" long. It bouced up and came down in from of me, I couldn't evade it due to the cars on both sides of me. I was lucky that it wasn't any higher. When it came down it hit my lower fairing and crushed it. (another $200). I was lucky that I was riding a trike, (pulling my camper), if I had been riding 2 wheels I don't know what would have happen. All the time I thought I was back far enough from the 18 wheeler to avoid or stop if need be. Boy was I wrong. The rest of the trip home I kept thinking if that tire had hit my windshield it would have knocked me off the trike, then what???????????? Ken- 20 replies

I have to agree with Larry, I have had my trike since July, and I enjoy it very much. I ride it just like I did my 2 wheels, "like riding in a race, trying to come in last place". Riding is "wind therapy" to me and I enjoy riding, it just so happens I have to have three wheels now. Those of you that have those "V" kits put on, just be careful, they don't handle like trikes do. You do have three wheels across the back. Accidents are going to happen we just don't know when. My prayers are going out to the lady that got injured and hope she recovers. Ken:12101:

Gary you and your family will be in my prayers, I'm so sorry to hear about this bad news. Ken

Welcome to the "Trike" world. Once you understand that you can't lean into the turns things will get better. I have had mine since July and I love it. Getting ready to ride it from FL to IN come Sept. We'll forgive you for getting a GW but like it was said, should have got your second gen "triked". I get a lot of comments on it because it doesn't look like a GW. But then again you have a reverse! and I don't! Have fun and ride safe, you'll still have people pull out in front of you. Thom, You can expect another 2-3 days of what you had. Just been through 4 days of it. Thought it would never go away. Cocoa Beach got 25+ inches. I know I got over 15 inches and quit counting. I'm lucky, I have no damage. The water was half way up my driveway. The middle of the block was flooded on my street. The same was going south from my house. Lost power for a while. Just to let everybody know - If you have a battery powered small TV, it will no longer work after Feb 09. You'll have to get another one. I got one, and it will be in the trash come the first of the year. They come in handy during times like this if you don't have a gen. I hope you come out from this thing, like it has been said, I have never seen a storm like this before. But then I have only been here 18 years. Ken:thumbsup2:

Thanks, I'll check it out. I don't know where the "Horse Park" is but I'll "Google" it and maybe they'll say something about a camp ground in the area. Ken:think:

When I lived in Indianapolis, and my sons were small, my family did do some camping at Clifty Falls State Park. It was a nice place then (back in the late 70's and early 80's) I liked it so much that I almost bought some land west of Madison. I had thought about going back to the Park on my way back home after leaving Lawrenceburg. I will be there training police dogs the first week of October. Thanks, Ken

September 8th I'll be riding off to Indianapolis leaving from the Kennedy Space Center Area. I'll be riding over to US27 then North to the eastside of Tallahassee then north on US19. I'll take US19 north to Albany, GA then US82 west over to GA520 then back north to US27. I'll be going on the westside of Atlanta, GA up to Chattanooga, TN. I'll then take US127 north to the westside of Lexington, KY. I'll then hop on US421 and take it to Madison, IN where I'll take IN7 north to US31 and on into Indianapolis. I plan of taking 3 days and camping on the way. Now, what I would like to know is - does anyone know of any camp grounds around that route that I have choosen? I'm thinking about camping somewhere around Albany, GA. then again somewhere south of Lexington, KY. Any help will be greatly appreciated, Ken

I have electric brakes on my camper, but I haven't hooked them up yet. I can't figure out where to put the controls. (They are not water proof). Now after reading your story I'm thinking of how I can put the controls on my trike. Thank you for sharing your story and getting me back on track. Ken 1 - UP

I have put around 500 miles on my trike now. I'm getting just a little more than 38 mph. When on two wheels I was getting 45 to 48 mph. I was hoping for 35. I have always ridden conserative. I keep it around the speed limits. It still has plenty of power when I "twist the grip" to get around traffic. No problem there. I haven't noticed any "drag" with the kit on. Living in Florida we don't have any hills or "grades" so I can't answere your question on that. I'll be traveling to Indianapolis in September pulling a camper and I'll be able to answere your question then. I'm enjoying my "new" ride and I'm learning something new everyday. Con: You can't lean into the turns. Pro: You don't have to worry about putting you feet down when coming to a stop. And when you are at a stop light (or sign) on a hill (Branson, MO comes to mind) you don't have to worry about getting your foot off the ground and to the brake before rolling backwards and starting up again. Con: Takes up extra space in the garage. Pro: The car can move over. Ken:thumbsup:

Eck, Yes I have, but a friend of mine and I took everything apart and re-did everything that you did at the camp ground. Knock on wood, I think we got it fixed. Thanks for asking, and thank for your help that day. Ken:fingers-crossed-emo

Thanks Lewis, well Larry here it is. I'm still learning about my "new" trike. It sure has taken a lot of strain away from my legs, which was what I was hoping. It rides real good, and with the "floor boards" I don't have to worry about putting my foot down and running over it when I come up to a stop. (I have been told that was a problem with those who move from two wheels to three wheels.) It sure is nice not having to put your feet down when coming up to a stop. I still want to lean when going into a turn. And I can tell you that it doesn't help. As we know there is no reverse, however, it isn't hard to push it backwards. It rolls better than I thought it would. I back it into my garage. (Up and incline) For those who have trikes, the guys that made mine up gave me a "parking brake". This "parking brake" is made from a bicycle intertube. They cut a strip about 2" wide. You put this on the brake lever and handle bar and it keeps the bike from rolling on you. I learn something new everyday. Thanks for all the nice comments. Ken:dancefool:

Thanks to all. Now I have some homework to do. I'm looking forward to my trip. I like all the infromation that you all gave me. I guess I'll have to plan on more than one trip to Indy so I can try all these routes. Dan, e-mail me and let me know where on the SE side of Indy you live. I use to live on that side also. When I was a Deputy there I patroled a lot in Franklin Twp. I lived there for 45 years of my life. Would like to move back when the temps don't get below 50 degrees. Thanks, Ken

Thanks Gary, I'll look into them. With the "rake" that they put on my bike when they triked it left the bars just a little low. (If you try to raise them they will hit the fairing) Maybe it's me, but I find myself pushing down on the bars when turning. I think if they were raised a little it would make turning a lot better. I'm leaving the Space Center Area in Florida around September 9th, and traveling to Indianapolis, Indiana and I don't want to use the Interstates. Has anyone traveled in or near this area that could tell me some good roads to take. I'm taking my camper and plan on taking about 3 days. I'm in no hurry and would like to see some sites on the way. Also if you have any infromation on camp sites I would like to know that. Thanks, Ken:backinmyday:

Thanks Larry, I've only had the chance to ride it twice, both times were around 150 miles. I checked the gas milege and I was getting 38+ which I thought was pretty good. I was getting 45 to 48 on two wheels. I would like to know what others are getting on "three" wheels. I was running at highway speeds some of the time 65 - 75, but most of the time I was around 50 - 60 on two lanes. I have the "running boards" so I don't have to worry about putting my feet down. They are weight bearing boards so I can stand on them. I weigh around 265. Ken

Thom, I'm still in Indiana. I'll be coming home next week end. Randy I don't know if I'll make it or not. This has been a 2 month vacation and I want to spend some time at home. It's called "Homesick". Squidley I had a Hannigan installed and I rode it today and it was nice. Takes a little getting use to, not being able to "lean" when turning, but I think things will be OK. My '04 is now triked. I got it back on the 3rd and it has been raining ever since. Today will be the first day that I'll have it on the road. As soon as I get some pictures of it I'll post them. The "Venture" continues now on three wheels. Ken:banana:
