We just got back from a So. Utah vacation. It was over 100 deg the first 4 days and under 70 deg the rest of the time. Hit a snow storm in Cedar Breaks and it was not open yet 5/22. Dress in layers and cool vest/neck scarves are a must. I would do Mesa Verde and the North rim of the Grand Canyon if I was you, great riding and views. Plan on doing some walking if you can. I love Zion but you need to hike to get the best views. I did Angles Landing and the view is awesome but a hard hike/climb. You will take lots of pics at all your stops for sure. Have you jacked up the rear and spun the tire yet? That would be my first step. Check that the wheel is true and rotor flat. Let us know what you find. Good luck Rod

I lowered the front of "Rose's Road sofa" just before our trip to So. Utah and got back Sun. 5/25. I have the narrower front tire (new) and lowered the front by 5/8". The steering is much quicker/lighter feeling. I tried every thing I could think of to induce head shake, "tank slapper" and it did not happen. I have had the narrower front tire for several years and liked the improvement in slow speed handling. While teaching we do allot of slow speed maneuvers and thought I would see if lowering it would help make the exercises smoother. I like the change once I got the feel for it, 2 up and loaded maneuvering in the gas lines and parking lots was much easier and running down the road it takes a lighter touch. I am very happy with the change. The only thing is my rear shock started to leak after 1300 mi (73,000 mi on bike). I don't know if lowering the front had anything to do with it but very well could have. I pumped up the air and finished the trip with no handling problems at all. Now that we are home I will see how it feels unloaded and one up. ride safe Rod

Here are some tips for long rides, every one feel free to add to the list. Take regular breaks. We stop every 1-1 1/2 hours to rehydrate, stretch, change riding gear,fuel up, etc. If you feel tired,fatigued take a break. Drink lots of fluids. The wind will dehydrate you no mater what the temperature, stay hydrated. Enjoy the ride. A relaxing pace and good attitude will get you further down the road safer and more comfortable. Make your plans flexible. If you hit bad weather or other problems be able to change your plans and adapt. Dress in layers. Have clothes for changing weather conditions. Carry some snacks for the breaks. Have fun and enjoy the ride. Rod (500 mi is an easy day for us.)

We are going to St. George on vacation for 10 days this afternoon. We are going with our friends ( he has a 06 Wing).We will be staying at their time share and should have internet. We are going to leave around 3:00 pm when they get off work and ride as far as he can then get a room and make a 2 day trip up there. If any one in the area wants to meet shoot me an email. Rod

Question for those with highway lights and lowered front end. Do you have any problems with the lowers (plexi wings) hitting? I also plan on putting a spacer on the light bar to move it away from the faring and this will lower it some also. I broke one side bottoming out and am making replacements so I can make them shorter. Thanks Rod 2 days to Utah trip and the bike is in pieces, but they are clean.

Who is getting the best fuel mileage?

The best I ever got was 54 MPG. A planned gas stop in the middle of no where was closed and I baby-ed it to the next town, coasted down hill, kept at 55mph and prayed. I put 5.8 gal. in the tank. Worst I got is 33MPG running 75+ with headwind to Tombstone AZ. Both on regular gas (no ethanol). Rod -

I guess that it could be possible but not likely. Low voltage from bad battery/connections in theory could have an effect, but I would expect other symptoms to go along with it. Enjoy the ride and ride safe. Rod

I have bent levers many times with no problems. Be carful not to overheat and let it cool slowly. On the range bikes when the levers get bent from getting dropped I bend them back cold and most of the time they are ok. Levers on the range bikes are lighter than the Venture. Rod

I use an manual impact driver on any screws that don't come loose easy. No stripping the head but can twist the head off. Those screws are real soft. Rod

We are going to St. George Utah for vacation May 17-25. We plan on going to Zion, Brice, Cedar Breaks, North Rim may be, and what ever. Any locals know of things to see or do in the area? Mostly we plan on riding,eating,resting and repeat. Thanks Rod

Look at the tech section for plastic repair. Urethane paint is what I would use. Prep is everthing on paint, the more time spent on prep the better the end result. Rod

Most if not all the group riding guides I have seen suggest the lead bike in the left of the lane. I ride with a guy that only rides on the right an if he leads we adapt no big deal. Gary counts bikes and gets in line so he is on the right. We don't care what ever works for them is OK with me. Rod

Perhaps your next food bridge should be made to accommodate the motorcycle. You stole my thought! I know how slippery the bottom of the creeks can be but the best way I found is to ride it like a dirt bike, stand on the pegs and go through as fast as you safely can. Not easy or fun on a #900 bike but do able. Rod

I agree that seafoam or other good carb cleaner could help and can't hurt. A couple of other things, check the idle, some people turn it way down to sound more "Harley like". Check to make sure your choke linkage is working properly. I use full choke when cold and hit the start button put my gear on and turn off the choke and ride away. Rod MM Venture #222

I love the pic of rappelling with the dog. I was K-9 in the USAF Grand Forks ND. My dog Pete was a tracker and we got called to look for lost kids,escapees and what not. Pete did not like helicopters and we had to rappel out a few times; it was the only time I had to muzzle him. Perfect dog other than his hatred of choppers. He was 85-90 lbs I was 145-150lbs. The best day of my life was finding a 3 yr old lost girl after she was missing 48 hrs. She would not let go of Pete and it was a hassle getting Pete to let the parents have their daughter back, he loved his job. No one wanted to "catch" Pete...he left bruises no matter how much padding you used. I still miss that dog 30 yrs later. He was one of a kind. Sniff Rod

Hate to hear about the crash but good to hear you are not too badly injured. Watch out for the pains that show up after the fact and take it easy. I know from experience that some damage to the joints, tendons etc. take some time to show up. If I can be of help let me know. I am in San Diego but have time, if you can give me tent space. Have tools can travel. Break my heart and give me an excuse to have a road trip ;^). Take time to heal and good luck. Rod ps Laughlin is over rated IMO you did not miss much that you won't get at a good local bike/classic car show.
