I vote for Durango. Lots to see many many miles of great roads. Lots of places to stay and things to see. Rod

There are some tricks to staying upright. Any body want me to list them? Scotty> Yes we can compare notes. Riding on gravel, keep speed moderate and don't do any thing radical; sudden turns, stopping or accelerating. Stopping, keep your front wheel straight and little or no front brake. When riding slow use the friction zone to control speed, rather than throttle or brakes. Add more tips please. Rod

Great write up! We did a similar trip a few years ago minus the iron butt. We plan on doing it again and take more time. These Ventures sure do love the open road don't they. That is a trip your son will always remember for sure. Ride safe Rod

Handle bar wobble with no hands...
rod replied to bugfish69's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
While tires can and often are the cause of front end wobbles on the Venture I would go to the steering head/triple tree/neck bearings. On many occasions changing tires helped some but until the bearings were tightened nothing made the wobble go away. Tighten the triple tree and enjoy the ride. Rod -
You can pick up tire changing "spoons" at Harbor Freight cheap or look around at the auto parts stores. A scissor jack will work to lift the rear in a pinch (block it up good while doing the work). We changed a tire on a friends Nomad in the motel parking lot in Tombstone once and all we had was a flat bar and two big screwdrivers and a scissor jack. Breaking the bead was the hard part. Lots of lube and care full prying and stomping did the job in the end. Good luck Rod

What kind of 750 ? We have some bikes on the range that will crank over with the kill switch on and others not. I would start at the switchs on the handle bars, then safety switches/relay and last the solenoid itself. In a pinch you can install a aux start button till you sort things out. A solinoid for older cars can be used and are much cheaper if you can find a good place to mount it. A lot of guys on the Virago site use an old Ford solenoid for a lot less money than the bike part. Good luck Rod

I would start by cleaning the switches real good. Most of the time this is the problem. She can spray some WD 40 frome the outside but it is better to take it apart. Tap the screw driver with a hammer while twising to keep from stripping the soft screws (or use an impact driver) on the housing. I think the turn signals and 4 ways use the same flasher but not sure. Good luck Rod

You can try this email list and forum. Good group of guys. What do you need, I have some extra stuff for my 98. Good luck and hope she heals fast. Rod subscribe: lists.bengrosser.com/listinfo.cgi/virago-bengrosser.com http://viragotechforum.com/phpBB/

When I was rear ended on my MM there was no problem getting the replacement parts (rear fender and left saddle bag). If looking for used best bet is to buy whatever color you can an repaint I would think. Good luck and heal fast. Rod

The latest scheme to cut time crossing the Mexico border. http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20080619/news_1m19scooter.html I wonder how many students we will get because of this. Rod

A general rule is the faster you go the less the wind affects the bike. Not all the time but most of the time. Lean and try to relax and adjust counter steering as needed. Went to Tombstone one year (500mi) and had 25+ mph winds the whole time, not too fun but we made it OK. Rod

FYI there is a plastic spacer that is suppose to go on the end to fill the gap between the bar end and grip end. A piece of PVC pipe ( 3/4" I think will work). Good luck Rod

To temp risers on the floorboards strap 2x6 (or what ever size is needed) to the floorboards. No strapping the kid on the bike. My sons rode at around 3yrs around the block (they sat in front of me). Grandson had to wait till he could reach the pegs (Mom and Grandma rule). Rod

I would go with the camp fuel, lacquer thinner, acetone or other solvent you may have at hand. Plan old Tide laundry soap works good too but getting all out can be a hassle. It is much cheaper than Seafoam. I would save the Seafoam or Berrymans B-12 for the final cleaning. You can put some 1/4" nuts in the tank and shake it around to help break the gunk up. Be careful not to get too carried away as you can dent the tank from the inside if you shake violently where the nuts hit where there is no fluid. Rod

Get rid of the antique bike and buy a new 2nd gen. :rotf:Sorry could not resist. I would start by checking the safety switches and starter button. Unplug check and clean one at a time till it starts. Good luck Rod

I suggest touch up paint, custom paint or reflective stickers (like these, http://www.streetglo.net/ ) Rod

Looking for a littel help for my brand new rider wife of mine..

We have some Rebels on the range for training bikes. The levers are brittle on the Hondas so I would put some heat to them and bend them. There is alot of room to adjust free play so that should be OK. Good luck Rod -
Not on here, but a month ago we had a guy 93 take the BRC. Something he always wanted to do. He had a 600cc scooter. He did ok but we had to slow him down a few times. Rod

When I had that problem and nothing worked to retrieve the pics a Friend told me about a recovery program. It is called "Handy Recovery" it was cheap and worked really well and is easy to learn. It has worked for 99% of the files I used it on. Good luck Rod

Last Saturday between St. George and Las Vegas I passed a 1st gen on 15 so. at around 11:00 am. I honked and waved but he did not catch up. I guess his antique bike could not keep up with the 2nd gen. :rotf: Any one from here? Rod

Does anyone ride with no windshield ?
rod replied to a topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Get some dark plexiglass and make/have made a short shield. I made one when I first bought the bike because I did nor like looking through the windshield. I liked it but one ride and Rose said "put the big shield back on now!". I now have the Cusom Chrome shorter wider shield from JCW and it works for both of us. Rod -
My friend with a Wing has reflective tape stripes on his and leaves them on all the time with no problems. Following him at night you can really see them swaying and reflecting the head lights. Rod

We look for the local Mom and Pop place and get whatever is different or the house special. Traveling is the only time I eat regularly, at home I tend to forget to eat more than 2 meals a day (I do snack at night). Rod

throttle play..end to end..
rod replied to hoghead's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Do you have the stock grips? I installed some after market grips for a friend and they came with some large thin plastic washers to take up the slack. You could cut some out of a milk jug or square water bottle etc. Rod- 8 replies
