Herb: glad to hear you found a replacment! I just comlpeted a 2500 mile trip with 2 wings and a ultra classic HD. My 88 VR and the others ran like jewels and all did about the same on fuel use. the mech problems we encountered were 88 VR steering head brgs started binding ,,but trip was completed no problem 1993 1500 wing ,,nothing other than slightly lower fuel milage 2004 1800 : after 1500 miles lost headlamp, due to short in 4 way flasher control unit.No problem he now was placed in the middle of the pack. 2003 Ultra classic lost cruise control,, dont know why yet. The bike listed all got between 38 and 42 mpg as we all ran in a group. We all suffered poor mileage heading into20 to 40 mph head winds. We have made long trips with the HD before and he runs with us just fine,, well maybe he's flat out on Interstate 10 in west Texas. The speed limit is 80 mph and you can see for miles in all directions. IE not many Troopers. Im a firm believer :if it well maintained : go for IT Bill P

Sticking caliper
bill p replied to okiefirefighter's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
:farmer:Now were talking a real problem. Do you know which side is sticking? The left side is coupled to the foot brake and the right side to the r/h hand brake . First I would bleed the old fluid from the system till it runs clear. You might try to remove the pads from the sticking side and soak the pistons and calper with liberal spraying of a good penetrating oil. You can use a piece of wood ..... like a wedge or prying tool to push the piston back into the caliper, then pump it back out with either the foot pedal or the hand brake. Not knowing what tools you have and what experience you have in using them puts us at a big disadvantage. Should you take it into a shop they will tell you a complete overhaul of the brakes system is needed. That is the only way they can protect themselfs from liability. A 20 year old bike probably should have the brakes hoses replaced. I did mine 3 years ago with lines from BUCKEYE PERFORMANCE. You will never be sorry but it an full days work. My 88 Vr s only limit on stopping power is the condition of the tires. Do you have a service manul? You will need it for bleeding . The instructiond are in the tech section here, or in Venturers site. good luck Bill P -

Gas reserve knob
bill p replied to okiefirefighter's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You have a guage : the bars, the speedo, a red light, and two eyes. Put it on reserve and leave it there. The thing will start shutting down too soon anyway . then you have to stop and get off and turn the d### thing then get back on . Try this in the dark and along a busy road. Mine gets a min of 150 miles on a tank. Thats my take and Im sticking to it:680::680: bill P:bang head::bang head: -
Yet another CLASS Issue
bill p replied to 86Royale's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The fix worked on my 88 VR. My control box was removed as described, then taken apart as instructed . The repair of the solder joints of the pins, to the circuit board were cracked. I examined the circuit board with a magnifing glass and could find no cracks. Reassembled the whole mess and WALLA it worked . I hope my amature soldering holds up. My sincere THANKS to those who have fixed these problems before it happend to my bike . This save us loads of cash in buying new or used parts, when something can be fixed this easy. THANKS!!!! bill p -
Just a few more tips from a guy who makes part of his living cleaning fogged headlamp lenss. 1 go to a auto paint supply store and get some 2000 grit wet and d ry sand paper. 2 use it with plenty of soapy water,, a spray bottle works great. 3 Sand till the deep scratch is gone ,, use fresh pieces of wet paper, do not let it clog . pack the paper . Did I say lots of soapy water! 4 polish the affected area with your polish,, or you can use automotive rubbing compounds. start with medium cut, or swirl removing compound then go to mirror glaze compound. you will be amazed at the results. NOTICE: this type of refurbishing removes the hard coating on the plastic. dont do it on a wind shield that is ok , try pledge first. then ,and only then, resorte to the above steps. My 88 VR was very bad when I got the bike and it has served me well for over 60000 miles . PS it will remove the shaded areas on the inside be careful, if you want to keep it. Bill P

Funny never heard this before. My 1st gen the radio DOES cut out when you begin to talk, both with headsets or dash speakers. They must have changed it on the 2nd gen. Bill P -

starter clutch update!or WHY ME????
bill p replied to hipshot's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You may be special , but I too just replace my clutch ass . Same thing 2 of the screws loose and the 3rd was barley tight. Be sure to use loctite on them when reinstalling them. And stake them this will keep them from backing out should they loosen again . Mine too was cracked looked like yours. The marks on the flywheel will have no effect on the working of the ass. I found the hardest part of the job was getting the gasket off the cover. I did not want to pull the wires out of the cover so I had to work on it attached to the bike. All is well now and starts just fine. Bill P -
Do I have this correct? 5 nights lodging and Food for the 2 of you for 400.00 with friends . I wish I could travel so cheap. I must be missing something here. You cant stay at a decent motel for less than 50.00. And unless you are eating kiddy meals. Sounds like someone did a lot of work to get those prices. Be thankful and have a good time nomatter which way you want to go. Bill P

What does the oil look like? Have you changed it? Is it loosing coolant and not dripping on the ground? Does it run on all cylinders? will it start easily? If it starts fine and oil is full and ok coolant full . RUN it with seafoam in the oil and in the gas . Have you drained the gas,,,,,, bad gas can cause smoking and lots of problems.. May have to suck out old and put in fresh with Seafoam. All the above ideas are good except getting a 2nd gen.... LOL.Very few blown head gaskets on this motor! Put the air box back on and close it up,, they dont run well without all the plumbing in place.. Let us know good luck Bill P

Clutch fluid level
bill p replied to BJB's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The slave cylinder is located inside the l/h riders footpeg. It is under a rubber cover, with the bleeder fitting sticking out the top,the bleeder fitting should be covered with a rubber cap. Still cant fnd it? it is to the rear of the aluminum side cover that has the 1300 sign on it, and forward of the middle gear side cover. middle gear cover is inside your l/h heel when riding You should place a piece of plastic hose over the end of the fitting. then pump the clutch lever a few times holding it to the grip and then opening the fitting,to allow fluid to run out the hose. DO BE VERY CAREFULL BRAKE FLUID WILL DESTROY PAINT AND PLASTIC PARTS.COVER THE CASSETTE AND RADIO WITH THICK TOWELS AND DONT LET IT SOAK THRU. I clean out the resivoir and wipe the bottom of the resivoir with a clean rag ,this is where the crud settles. Fill it and keep pumping fluid thru till is comes out clean and clear. Do the bleeding in a sequence of pump , hold ,open bleeder, close bleeder, pump, hold, open bleeder, on on on till the fluid it clear. It takes longer to read this than it does to do the job. The clutch lever should feel light resistance as it is compressed, and the engine should be disconnected from the transmission when it is fully compressed. Bill P -
I live and ride here and for the last 10 years not once has our Right to carry laws been a problem. there is a confidence in knowing for every nut case there are thousand of level headed adults who are willing to take charge of a situtation. Bottom line is YOU ARE Safe here,, Safer than in most places Id bet. You will not find a more motorcycle friendly enviroment than here, and the weather is great most of the year. WE dont have winter storage here,, oh thats right in South Texas we dont really have winter. Bill P Come on down:bighug:

Info, you wont get best rider of the year here. This better be a hoax on your part. Those flat spots are from sliding your rear tire. I wrote two paragraphs scolding you. But erased them. ou are one lucky dude. By the way the elite 3 will get you 15000 with proper care on a VR. Bill P

Sounds like you are watching the right things. You will get condensation in the air box on short runs . I would think after 60 miles it should be gone. If your not loosing coolant, dont worry about it. Riding in the cold will produce moisture. You just need to ride it more. Bill P

Three of us generally ride together and the CB makes it easy to talk to each other as if we were in a car. At times we chat about everything from the weather to our wives. Today we met up with a couple from Indiana , down here in South Texas, and we asked him to turn on his CB to 29 and he got to use it for the first time on his trip.. He was surprised that we were constantly talking. Also a great safety feature when riding with a group.. Loose rocks in the road .. dead animal on the left hand side etc. Much better than hand signals. Yes when riding alone it is not of much value, it doesnot have enough range to get help. cell phone is much better Bill P

Starter was intermittenly making loud clanking and banging noise. I had months ago had the starter out and cleaned it out, and it was spinning as it was supposed to. Thanks to this and other forums : the answer was the clutch which turns the crankshaft. The parts were ordered from my local dealer, new clutch assy, and gaskets to do the job. Thanks again to the tech section the job went very well. My dealer San AntonioYamaha even gave me a discount on the parts because I told him I was a member of both thr VENTURERS: and THE VENTUR RIDERS forums. Here in San Antonio we are fortunate to have 2 great dealers one in town the other in Kerrville. Destinitation Cycle . I think I saved 5 hrs labor charges and the parts at a discount, Im a happy camper. Any one in the area, SOUTH TEXAS that needs help, send me a PM. I feel grateful to be part of this group. Heck I had a hard time watching the Countrt Music Awards. Most of the new (Music ) is crap. Thank God ,here in S Texas we have a number of classic country stations both AM & FM. This must be a sign of getting old, I can remember my Dad saying the same things I see here. Bill P

I too believe in individual thinking so I guess this goes against the grain here. They all look like soldiers , riding the same mounts ,wearing the same uniforms and riding in generally unsafe manner. I have ridden many thousands of miles on bikes and cars , and trucks and I too have a right to think they are just a herd of Wanna Bees ,who for whatever reason think it is cool to look like, and act like the rest of the pack. 99% are the nicest people in the world. I get into discussions about everything from safety gear ,to radio communications . Most dont want to hear it . They are also the ones without adequate medical insurance ,and will not have to pay the bill when disaster strikes. And sooner or later it Will strike.. All I could see as that herd of bikes went up that ramp ,was what would happen if something went wrong in the pack? We know what would happen ,we just refuse to acknowledge it. IL get off my SOAP BOX now I'm going riding Bill P This was not ment to make anyone angry: It only my 2 cents. Thats all its worth. One little voice among many thousands. Ride SAFE
