RSTD Problem
RandyR replied to Dirtbikindad393's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
probably the kickstand interlock is sticking. Sounds the same as it would act when the kickstand is down. -
EBC makes both. I prefer the non metallic on non-ABS brakes. A bike that goes down because a wheel locked up is worse than taking a few extra feet to stop. A matter of preference, as I said. Most people here seem to prefer the HH metallic, however.

The restaurant at Turner's Corner, about 10 miles south of Vogel on US 129 is open again under new management. I talked to the new owner today, a guy named Steve. He's open Thurs-Sunday 11am - 9pm for lunch and dinner. Burgers, steaks, fish, and what he calls country cooking.

Potential buyer questions
RandyR replied to jgcable's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
The issue of stopping on uneven or sloping ground is a problem that requires caution. One does need a little extra leg to backup, and that is a valid concern. I've avoided lowering kits because they change the geometry of the bike as it was designed. I once bought a BMW that has too high of a saddle for me. It was a constant fight to avoid problems like you are concerned with. I wouldn't ride it double. I'd give the bike a very good test ride to make sure none of the things you've outlined are a problem. -
Potential buyer questions

I have a 29inch inseam and can flatfoot either my RSTD or my RSV (with old style seat). The RSV is slightly more top heavy than the RSTD, as I expect this customized RSTD is that you're thinking about purchasing. I don't know what you're paying for the RSTD, but as already suggested, if you want a Venture, buy one instead of a one-of-a-kind RSTD. Unless you are getting a very good $ deal. Either of them requires more leg strength than my Triumph which is 300 lbs lighter. -

sounds like an application for a GPS hooked in could do it.... except for lane changes. -
Nice tank bib. I think I need to replace the black one on mine with one in tanned leather. http://venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=59587&d=1312942421

As said already, the stock Bridgestone tires on these machines are not the best handling. I went to a front Avon 130 width and the low speed handling is very much improved on my '08 RSTD.

I bought mine in Iowa

A windshield lock for the RSTD
RandyR replied to jfoster's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I've never heard of anyone having one stolen, have you? or just being cautious? -
sounds like a great adventure. make sure to post pictures of the new trike and then the trip. And this means that you'll have to attend M&E's in 48 states. Plan on eating lots of icecream.

one more thing. once you've replaced a shim, rotate the engine forward at least 3 turns and recheck the new clearance. every once in a while, it doesn't come out like you would expect.
-
the tool depresses two shim buckets at a time. Sometimes its easier inserting the tool turning the cam backwords. Doesn't matter. be sure the slot in the shim bucket is pointing the direction you want to remove the shims from such that you can easily get a pick on the edge of the shims to pry them up. The shims and buckets are the same for 1st and 2nd gens, so look at all the threads. member Dingy has posted a picture of the shim tool depressing the buckets which is worth seeing if you haven't done this before. I'll try to find it and post it. yes, sometimes one has to try with the tool a couple times to get it to depress the buckets properly. member v7goose has posted some info and pictures of the procedure as well as Dingy.

rotate the cams again and recheck to make sure you're at valves closed. if you still can't get a feeler gauge under them, then be prepared for all of them being too tight. Which could be a possibility if they have never been adjusted. I don't think I've ever seen one where I couldn't get some feeler gauge under the cam. How many miles on the engine?

it sounds like Stuart's is a good place to do business for anyone riding in that area.

good pictures Kenny. that corner of South Dakota is quite a land of contrasts. From lush forests of the Black Hills to the desolate badlands and rugged mountains to prairies of waving grasses. All within a few miles of each other.
