  1. should this be moved to the jokes section or the memorial?
  2. My local Ace HW was unable to cut a key that worked for me. ymmv
  3. Congrats to you two.
  4. I think you needed to rebuild the garage bigger after the (ahem) accident.
  5. diameter 25mm shims are one of the most common sizes for motorcycles and some cars/trucks with shim over bucket.
  6. you can never have too many motorcycles
  7. The code on my RSTD tag is a letter (A) followed by 4 numbers
  8. pervert
  9. It rained here all night
  10. There should be a link to the RSTD specific stuff in the Tech Section. That said, I agree that one of the Clymer books is handy to have in hand.
  11. The full eclipse will start at about 3am edt tonight.
  12. I've had keys made from the code and the locksmith didn't need my key. If you don't have a anything with the key code (gas cap or bags, or helmet lock on your bike may have a code, new ones don't) a locksmith can measure the key with a machine that tells him what the keycode should be, then he can have a machine make a new key from the code. Ken Veit in Calhoun GA (a forum member & locksmith) showed me how it was done several years ago.
  13. Way to go Mike. I know you've worked hard and long for it.
  14. See you when you come back this way Mark.
  15. Four statisticians had been duck hunting together. When they came back to the cabin where their wives were, they proudly proclaimed that they had shot a duck. When asked to see the duck by the wives, they proclaimed that the average of their shots killed the duck, therefore, they shot a duck.
  16. Do the free upgrade to Win 8.1 There is a start button app to make it look more like win 7. but the standard Win 8.1 menu system gives me more apps in a quick to use format. There is a Start screen with icons for common apps. then lower left corner (have to mouse there to see it) is a down-arrow. click that and the rest of the start menu stuff is there iconized. click the icons, and get the apps that look like traditional Win 7 and earlier. Hit the [Windows] key to get the normal desktop or [windows] key again to get the 2 start screens. You do have to be careful when configuring and downloading not to let MS and 3rd parties install stuff you don't want. But that's true of Win 7 too. So, the [windows] key and the down-arrow to switch between the 2 start screens gives everything I need in an easy to find format. Once you get used to it its actually faster than navigating the old style start menu.
  17. btw, win 8 does not require or need a touch screen. It works just fine with a mouse and keyboard for me. I have no desire to have a touchscreen. I will admit that the origonal win 8.0 seemed to lean towards the touchscreen, but was quickly 'fixed' so that is no longer an issue.
  18. windows 8.1 is fine. I had problems getting used to the early win8.0, but since 8.1 its ok, and I like it as well or better than win7. I don't like MS pushing people to buy stuff thru their store (like Apple). I've been using 8.1 since it was offered and never had a bsod, although I have a friend who has had a couple bsods while playing some games that are in the alpha testing stage. I've even run some Win xp programs under win8.1 without problem.
  19. http://www.frys.com/ads/page14#AdNavi For those who want or need to upgrade their Windows operating system, this is the best price I've seen since the early win8 upgrade packages 1-1/2 years ago.
  20. good ride. I miss mine. btw, the Millenium is a 2000 not 2001 model year. Just read the forum to find all the tips and tricks. in particular, the 2nd gen Tech section http://www.venturerider.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=14 btw, this is the first year we haven't held a 'March on Rome' rally at the Fuddruckers up by the Stadium.
  21. yes. the side that goes down (and not subject to wear) if the engines are for parts then scavenging the shims makes sense. I've mic'd all my shims (need a good quality mic) which I recommend you do to all the shims new or used.
  22. the shims are 25mm diameter. The thickness in our motorcycles will range from (about) 2.60mm to 2.85mm (I said generally). The 1stgen, 2nd gen, (inc RSTD) and 1st gen Vmax use the same shims, as do about 50 other makes of bikes and 1970-1990 Toyota 4cyl engines (the most widely produced engine ever made, with heads designed by Yamaha). The Toyota shims tend to be slightly thicker on the average than Yamaha MC shims. I bought some used Toyota shims and only about 50% of them were in the above thickness range. shims removed from engines will be found in any thickness, in 0.01mm increments. The most common commercial replacement shims are in 0.05mm increments Triumph MC does sell 25mm shims in 0.025mm increments, but are more difficult to find. I found a good usable variety of used shims from a couple of parts bikes, but as FF said, ymmv.
  23. You could get a newer model for that price. the Tour Deluxe's made from 2005-2009 have more powerful engines and the same frame as the 2nd gen Venture (more parts and accessories)
  24. My kickstarting leg doesn't work right anymore.
