My new RSTD was purchased last week and now has 630 miles on it and is due for the 600 mile service. I don't see anything on the checklist for service due, that I can't do myself. I've ordered one of the Carb Tunes, can change my own oil and filters, etc, and have a Sears MC jack already with one of the Carbon_one lift adapters on order. BUT, I want to keep my warranty valid. Do I have to take it to a dealer and pay for the 600 mile service? And all the scheduled services thereafter until the end of the 5 year warranty period? I'm willing to keep a signed and dated log book with the bike to indicate when and what work I did on it.

Yep. Made my $1 donation. Wish I had looked sooner, there were a couple items gone already I would have liked. I did buy a new full helmet on sale also.

Here's a picture of the $60 Walmart tent. Its the blue and black one behind my white Mercury car. http://randyrick.us/LBJam2008/Camping2.jpg Its a 6 man tent, and quite roomy and high enough for me to stand in (I'm 5'9"). It is not a cold weather tent. Its light weight and has screening under the rain fly which can make it breezy if the wind is blowing. Great for moderate to warm weather though. It does roll up into a compact enough package that I anticipate carrying it on my RSTD along with a sleeping bag and thick airmattress bungeed onto the passenger seat.

So who has the most miles on a Venture or RSTD ?

I did several week+ camping/touring trips on bikes a number of years ago. I'm 62 now and looking at doing a few more now that I'm retired. The camping gear doesn't need to be as expensive as outlined above, in my opinion, although you getter better gear, the more you're willing to invest. A good 3man popup tent can be had for under $100 and a cheap sleeping bag for $25 and double thick air mattress for $25. Three changes of outer clothes and maybe double that of underwear. Plus layered jacket for warmth. Plus a good tool kit with tire plug. flashight. It will easily fit in a backpack (army surplus alice for $50 or similar) or the topbag and the 2 saddlebags. A sleeping bag makes a great backrest, by the way. There will be plenty of laundromats along the 2 lane roads and in small towns, and even in some state parks. Parks with covered picnic pavilions were my favorite spot to stay, get there at dark, and leave at sunup. No need to pitch a tent that way. Parks often have free shower facilities as well as some truck stops along major highways. If there is an extended spell of bad weather, or a couple days of sleeping out are getting old, then get a campground or go to a motel and soft bed to sleep in. If you see locals with cars parked at a bridge or lake edge, that may be a good spot to go swimming... Food can be purchased at a grocery store for 1/2 or less than at a restaurant. Grab a couple cans of fruit juice and a hoagie sandwich and some beenie weenies and a box of donuts. Eat 1 good meal a day in a restaurant.

So I'm trying to get up to speed on the technical aspects of my soon to be acquired 08 RSTD. I saw a post where someone mentioned that there was a change to the gearing (I presume for both RSV and RSTD) to eliminate gear whining. I looked around here and on the Star Motorcycles (Yamaha) site, but can't find anything about year-year changes, other than paint. Where might this be? Or do I need to buy some mechanic a 6-pack ?

This thread has me a little worried about the seat height on the new RSTD that I'm picking up next week. I have a less-than 30inch inseam, and one reason I chose the RSTD over a couple other possible rides is the 29.1inch seat height. I did sit on one in a dealers showroom last year, and it seemed ok, but I will admit, I didn't take it out for a ride. The buy was something of an impulse buy for me when I saw a great price that I could (just barely) afford on ebay, after watching for a couple years, as well as some other models. The local dealer didn't have any discounted 08 models available, so I did the ebay buy-it-now trick. My current ride, a Triumph 2001 Thunderbird, lists the seat height at 30.5inches and I can get my feet down fine, but its a narrower seat. Guess its good to know that lowering the RSTD isn't too difficult if I ever need to do that.

Maineac, I'll be picking up my RSTD at SkyPowerSports in Lake Wales just down the road from Kissimmee on April 3rd. I was planning on riding close by for a breakin run nearby April 4th, then heading for St. Augustine April 5th, Savannah April 7, back towards N. Georgia on the 8th. So any interest in a ride while I'm there?

Part 2 of Article 13 of Chapter 6 of Title 40 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to motorcycles, is amended by adding a new Code Section 40-6-312.1 to read as follows: "40-6-312.1. Notwithstanding any other provision of law to the contrary, the driver of a motorcycle approaching an intersection controlled by a traffic-control signal utilizing a vehicle detection device that is inoperative due to the size of the motorcycle shall come to a full and complete stop at the intersection and, after waiting for a reasonable period of time for such traffic-control signal to detect such motorcycle, may proceed with due caution when it is safe to do so." SECTION 2. All laws and parts of laws in conflict with this Act are repealed. See: http://www.legis.state.ga.us/legis/2005_06/fulltext/hb141.htm South Carolina has joined six other states that let motorcyclists, mo-ped drivers and bicyclists run red lights that don't change within a couple minutes of their stopping. Gov. Mark Sanford signed the bill into law
