Paper service manual
RandyR replied to tommycole's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Thanks. Couple questions. Is this RSTD specific, or combined RSTD and Venture? Is it an actual printed & bound manual, or pages printed from the online manual on a laser printer? -
Baron Tach install on RSV
RandyR replied to boominup's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
thanks. I just bought a Baron's tach and am not happy with the mounting angle on my 08-RSTD handlebars. I'll take a look at whats available from Ram Mount. -
about 3 hours south of there is Dahlonega, GA (where I live). Lots of good riding roads between the Dragon and here. Follow highway 129 south to hwy 19. Good riding all points in between. Helen GA about 30 miles east of here is a favorite destination on a motorcycle. Good restaurants, hotels and night life there. Richard B Russell Highway 138 and Brasstown Bald is a good ride just north of Helen.

Great pics. Thanks. I'll have to get there on my bike soon.

My Harley's New Garage Bud

Looks like a good garage-mate. Hopefully the seafoam and some fresh gas does the trick. If not, you'll get plenty of advice here on what to do next... -

Have you replace a coil on your RSV?
RandyR replied to Freebird's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Isn't it nice to have 4 big pistons working for you? As an aside, on a 650 Triumph I once lost a coil riding accross Oklahoma to Missouri with the nearest dealer about 150 miles away in Joplin. Riding on 1 piston was terrible. I had a bright idea, and pulled the spark plug from the piston that wasn't getting spark. That saved power needed on the compression strokes and stopped that side from sucking unneeded gas thru the carburator. It ran somewhat better, about 50 mph If I remember right. The dealer in Joplin didn't have a Lucas coil for my bike. But in rummaging around his junk pile found a Suzuki coil of about the right size and voltage. I ran on the Suzuki coil until I stopped riding that Triumph several years later. -
great catch. I rode a GL500 Silverwing for several years. Its a great intermediate size touring/commuting bike. I expect the 650 is even better. I may still have the Clymer's manual for it, if I haven't thrown it out. I'll see if I can find it.

There's the M&E next saturday on the north side of Atlanta if the timing is right for you.

Hmm.. I wonder if the Triumph truck might have one of the new 2010 Thunderbirds? The advert says 2009 models.... Hmm. Say after me, You don't need or want another motorcycle. Thankyou Terry, I'm thinking about heading up to TWO early, to be there before 10am.

this is really strange. some D404s getting very low mileage, less than 4,000 miles and others getting well over 10,000 miles. is this an inconsistent quality problem or the way they are used?

The Best Fuel
RandyR replied to ManWithAVision's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
87 octane regular. Most of the regular gas in this area contains 10% ethanol, even the name brands. I haven't noticed a problem so far. -
I vote, go for it. Just program in a liniment stop every 3 hours... Truthfully, I'd want to know for certain the bike was mechanically sound, tuned up, and had fresh fluids and good tires before heading accross country. Oh yeh. I play guitar with a bunch of friends at the 45 South Coffee House in Norcross on the 4th saturday afternoon of every month, stop by sometime and say howdy.

They were just a bunch of rowdy drunks on their way to a titty bar. As has been said, most riders aren't like this.

While we are on this topic. The owners maintenance schedule calls for changing spark plugs every year or 8,000 miles. That seems to be very soon/often. So I am wondering what other riders are really doing in this regard, and what type plugs seek to work best. I've usually used NGKs in previous bikes.

Bike dies when very wet

This is funny... I quit riding the old Triumphs back in the 1970's because I got tired of electrical problems in the rain. -
GAS mileage question
RandyR replied to knifeeven's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I have a new 08 RSTD ( bought this month). I rode it back to Georgia from Florida where I bought it with 0 miles on it. The first 2 tanks of gas riding around the Orlando area, got terrible mileage. But riding it up the highway (2 lane with very few stop signs/lights) straight and narrow and flat at 55 to 60 mph speed limits, using cruise control set for 5mph over speed limit, I got 44 miles per gallon on the last 2 tank fulls. This week there have been a couple of notes posted that the speedo (and I presume odometer) read about 10-15% high. So that would equate to about 10-15% less than the 44mpg I thought I was getting under what I would call best case for a near-new engine. I would think gas mileage would improve slightly after a few thousand miles are on the bike. -
I saw some here in Georgia recently. Either the April M&E ride or along Hwy 441 in south Georgia.
