  1. Sounds like a great trip. It'll be fun. Too bad you couldn't have started a day earlier and caught up with a large group of VR riders near Asheville.
  2. I stopped at the Fatz Cafe in Blairsville, GA. Its about 1/4 mile east of the Holiday Inn Express that people are staying at, that aren't camping. I told the manager that a group of bikers would be staying in Blairsville and camping at Vogel in a few weeks, and he donated a black XL Fatz tshirt to be given out in the drawing at the rally. I highly recommend Fatz as nice place, having quality food, at very reasonable prices. I eat there whenever I get the chance. Great rolls with every meal....
  3. mission accomplished ... yea
  4. Congrats on the new addition to the family !!
  5. Lake of the Ozarks is a misnomer. The Ozarks start 75 miles south of the lake.
  6. my statement 'leading edge technology" was said tongue in cheek. The Honda Magna was one of the best bikes made in my opinion. etc
  7. I was led to an article that claims both Honda and Aprillia are getting ready to introduce V4 engines. here's the link. http://www.gizmag.com/go/8129/ And we had a post yesterday that claimed Harley was also introducing a V4. We're leading edge technology it would seem....
  8. July 8, 2009 - The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) International has produced a simple, consistent and economical sound test standard that can be used to determine whether a street bike (on-highway motorcycle) exhaust system emits excessive sound, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) reports. The J2825 "Measurement of Exhaust Sound Pressure Levels of Stationary On-Highway Motorcycles," issued by the SAE in May, establishes instrumentation, test site, test conditions, procedures, measurements and sound level limits. According to the SAE, the J2825 standard is based on a comprehensive study of a wide variety of on-highway motorcycles. "The motorcycling community and law enforcement have long sought a practical field test for measuring street motorcycle exhaust sound," said Ed Moreland, AMA vice president for government relations. "Thanks to the hard work of the Motorcycle Industry Council, and the SAE engineers involved in the project, for the first time a simple field test is now available." "The AMA maintains that few factors contribute more to misunderstanding and prejudice against street riders than excessively noisy motorcycles," Moreland continued. "With the new SAE J2825 standard, street motorcyclists can now determine how quiet, or loud, their bikes really are." Moreland added that the new standard follows a template established years ago with the SAE J1287 off-highway motorcycle sound test, a standard recommended by the AMA wherever off-highway motorcycles are operated. The SAE J2825 on-highway motorcycle sound test procedure is similar to the one used for the SAE J1287 off-highway motorcycle test. The street bike measurement requires holding a calibrated sound meter at a 45-degree angle 20 inches from the exhaust pipe of a running engine. The procedure spells out how to do the test with the bike at idle, at a predetermined engine speed ("Set RPM Test"), or by slowly increasing the engine speed of the bike, known as the "Swept RPM Test." The SAE J2825 standard, prepared by the SAE Motorcycle Technical Steering Committee, recommends a decibel limit of 92 dBA at idle for all machines; or, using the Set RPM or Swept RPM Test, 100 dBA for three- or four-cylinder machines, and 96 dBA for bikes with fewer than three or more than four cylinders. The creation of a new street motorcycle sound measurement procedure was a top recommendation of the 2003 National Summit on Motorcycle Sound, expressed by its Motorcycle Sound Working Group. The AMA organized the National Summit on Motorcycle Sound to pull together riders and user organizations, representatives of the motorcycle manufacturers, the aftermarket industry, racing promoters, government agencies, and others to develop proposals regarding the increasingly controversial issue of excessive motorcycle sound. "The J2825 test allows jurisdictions around the nation, struggling with complaints about excessive motorcycle sound, to set reasonable limits in accordance with the SAE standard," said Moreland. "While the AMA supports the establishment of the SAE J2825 standard in America's cities, towns and communities, we will continue to fight efforts that single out motorcycles while still permitting excessive sound from other sources, such as loud cars and trucks, booming car stereos, poorly maintained generators, whining leaf blowers, and the like."
  9. I view water cooled and fuel injected as good options, emission levels aside. Water cooled engines have a tendency to have longer lives and to have less vibration. Fuel injected engines -should- run smoother, have slightly better fuel efficiency, and require fewer tuneups. Since they should also run cleaner, a FI engine should also last longer. Cleaner combustion means less carbon and acid to pollute the oil, so longer intervals between oil changes may be possible.
  10. OK, you've gotten me curious... Here are the EPA regulations for street motorcycles. http://www.epa.gov/otaq/roadbike.htm What it does say relevant to 2010 is: ------- Table E2006–2—Class III Motorcycle Emission Standards Tier Model year Emission standards (g/km) ------------------- HC + NOX CO Tier 1 2006–2009 ---1.4 ----- 12.0 Tier 2 2010 and later 0.8 ----- 12.0 (2) Compliance with the Class III HC+NOXstandards set forth in §86.410–2006 (a)(2) may be demonstrated using the averaging provisions of this section. To do this you must show that your average emission levels are at or below the applicable standards in §86.410–2006. However there is a maximum cap that a given vehicle can not exceed, even if included in the average from a given MANUFACTURER ----- So. The hydrocarbon and nitrogenoxide emission levels must be lower for 2010 model year machines. Class III motorcycles are those over 280cc displacement. All the models over 280cc can be averaged together (up to a point). If I recall correctly, the last time there was a deadline like this, a number of vehicle manufacturers made a large number of vehicles for the model year prior to the new regulation and continued to sell them the following year. Nowhere do the EPA regulations say 'water cooled' or 'fuel injected' . As has been pointed out, the regs state levels of emissions that the average motorcyle from the manufacturer (of over 10,000 motorcycles sold, over 280cc) must meet. From a practical point of view, what many manufacturers are doing is replacing the carburetors with fuel injected throttle bodies and emissions sensors in a cross-over exhaust (common point sensor). That would also imply a new TCI or computer to control the fuel injection and exhaust sensor. Thats a much simpler approach than designing a true combustion chamber fuel injection system, which would be a more difficult engineering change.
  11. Todd. I'm planning on heading up early in the morning Saturday. See you there. Randy
  12. I'll be there Monday evening, the 3rd. Thanks.
  13. ALL is a pretty big word. I doubt that very much.
  14. Its about time....
  15. I swapped my inner and outer rear pads with the caliper on the bike on Monday. The book calls for opening the fluid reservoir and removing the diaphram before compressing the pistons to insert the thicker pad. So I opened it up. Was that really necessary to push in the pistons?
  16. http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/?action=category&cat_id=002005 There are good pictures here of how to do it.
  17. Ya know, I always liked the regular Shiners beer, not the dark lager. I'd drink that if I could when in San Antonio. Somebody pick up a 12er of regular Shiners and I'll pay you for it if you bring me 6 of them to share in Arkansas.
  18. Think about making a stop in memphis to see Beale Street. This thread has me thinking that would be a good thing for me to do when leaving the international. From Memphis its just a jump south to New Orleans and then a swing past Mobile on your way to Vogel.

I don't know anything about the unit or if its a good price.
  21. The legal system in this country no longer serves the people of the country. I have little faith the Supreme Court will do the right thing.
  22. Rick, I will be at the International in Arkansas and then at the Dragon/Vogel. In fact I live about 30 minutes from Vogel. Be glad to show you around this area in north Georgia. There are lots of interesting and not so interesting routes between Arkansas and Georgia, I've made the trip many times, as my grandparents lived in Arkansas. Memphis (Beale Street) and Nashville are on one route. RandyR
  23. The Rebel should be a good first bike for your girlfriend. Good find.
  24. We get our annual bath that way....
  25. We have a relay program set up to forward items like these. Ask dragonrider how it works, he recently got a prize that way.
