I recall Blackjack made a similar post a few months ago and several members reported, that when they checked their gas cap, the screws were also loose. Seems to be an item that needs to be added to everyone's maintenance list. -
help me troubleshoot my '87
RandyR replied to nateo's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The path of least resistance is to ride it a while (even if you have to use a little choke) with a good dose of Seafoam. It might take a couple tank fulls to clean things out, if you're lucky. -
I'l bet he has an appetite... Good looking dog !

Welcome Larry. Its a 2nd Gen. See the Maintenance Forum for the online service manuals in .pdf format. There's other good reading there on mechanical fixums for your bike.

There seem to be quite a few posts on this site where the title really gives one no clue as to what the poster is going to say or wants. If I'm in a hurry, and skimming for posts that are most relevant to me, I may miss something. Likewise, after a period of time, if I'm looking for a thread that contained something I needed, it may be hard to locate based on a generically worded title. M&E's even in the planning stages should contain the location and dates. Requests for mechanical help should contain the model of MC in question. And so on. Thank you. End of sermon.

The "C" models are California emissions type I believe. You can tell because they have Mickey Mouse ears stamped next to the gear box (kidding)...

I will tell you that if solid state electronics take a voltage spike, it may be a while before they completely fail. Experience learned in large computer rooms. Very hard to track problems like that.

Sounds fair. Or you could borrow a shim kit and tool from several people here on the forum and do it yourself.- 22 replies

Yep. Good lesson. Thankfully you're able to tell it.

Lets hope NTSB doesn't read this, or we'll all have to wear orange life jackets next year while riding... Get well soon...

thx. It looked like it -might- be ok to reuse the old gasket, seeing how heavy it is and the low torque used with the valve covers. Probably a good idea to have a new one on-hand, just in case though.

Its not unusual for one cyclinder in any multi cyclinder engine to need rings, while the others are ok (or better). I agree, the oil test you did is a good indicater of a rings problem, as you surmised already. But, you should check the valves too, just to be on the safe side. Same valve shims and tool for the 1st gen as 2nd gen (and vmax too). I wonder if the rings from the 2nd gens would work on the 1300cc 1st gens? they seem to have the same bore/stroke. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?threadid=39054 btw, I see a couple minor errors in this table.- 22 replies

I camped out there numerous times in the 60's while in highschool and college. Its a beautiful place with good riding nearby. the downside would be that because it is a popular destination closer to St. Louis, it will be more crowded, and so will the roads.

Well, Ole Jay has one in his garage now.... isn't that nice... do a promo shot with Triumph marketing and get paid in iron !!! I saw a non-running prototype with the Triumph demo truck about 4 months ago, and was disappointed because I wanted to try one out. But I have the RSTD now and am generally happy with it. The price on the new Thunderbird isn't going to be much less than the RSTD, and by the time you add bags, windshield and sissy bar, you're over the price of the RSTD. I haven't ever owned a belt driven bike, but I'd almost give the nod to a belt, all other things being equal.
