  1. It seems to vary greatly, maybe more so than the question, how many miles do you get out of a set of tires. Initially I was expecting to have to put in new rear pads at 10,000 miles, based on some comments I read after joining the forum. But it seems that is the low extreme, with others claiming upwards towards 30,000 miles. Checking the pads every oil change and rotating the inner and outer rear pads every oil change or so seems wise. There was a recent article about using a shim with the rear caliper mounting bolts to even out the uneven wear.
  2. There's a list of the torque specifications in the Tech Library.
  3. You've got a good looking goldie Jeff. Too bad the pack didn't take your route...
  4. be careful with paypal. They have been known to deduct money from your bank account.
  5. 1971
  6. Ouch.... Don't forget to top off the tank and add some Stabil. What a way to spend the Fall riding season..
  7. from the Oberlin College web page. Commencement weekend starts Friday May 28 and ends Monday may 31. There's plenty of room for more tents...
  8. Lets do it. May 29 is good for me.
  9. He may know it by now... Or maybe not if nothing happens when he turns the key on...
  10. Looks like they each had a double shot of tequila in their DQ milkshakes...
  11. Also, no relationship between the petcock and the fuel gauge sensor. the sensor is just a float. The sensors have gone bad on a few bikes. See tech article by Freebird where he had to derust the tank on his bike using Kreem, it has a picture of the fuel sensor.
  12. Both the reserve and main run off the left side of the tank. The main is taken off a tube that sticks up a couple inches, the reserve draws at the bottom. There is no tube between the right and left side of the tank, so if the bike is perfectly vertical with no sloshing back and forth, you will go empty with some gas left in the right wing of the tank. There's a picture of the fuel switch floating around the tech section I believe. Also read the numerous articles on the fuel pump. The pumps seem to go bad on a lot of bikes with 40,000 miles or so on them. There was a recent thread where v7Goose described how to listen for the pump ticking to determine if its bad. Apparently a generic low volume 12v fuel pump from Autozone can be used. Fuel filters also clog up. There's a tech article about this too with owners relocating the filter so they can change it more easily.
  13. http://www.mctourer.com/rides/2009/SS1K/Newnan.html try that. The links origonally posted are redirected links that don't work for me either if I just click on them. however the displayed text is good. I cut and pasted it into another browser window and it comes up ok.
  14. The igniter coil tells the computer that already. Or am I missing something... this is a sidebar, I know... btw. there is still the new (0 miles) old stock 2007 Midnight Venture for sale off ebay in Laredo for $11+ with 0 bids. I don't believe someone isn't buying this...
  15. Welcome Hunter.. I also bought one of the NOS 2008 RSTD's back in April. I love it, its a great machine. Maybe someone else has experience with that fairing. There's another thread going on about fairings, and I don't recall any mention of the one you took off.
  16. A bicycle pump would work fine. One that has a pressure gauge is good, otherwise check it after each pump or two unitil you get a fell for it. btw. welcome to the neighborhood.
  17. Looks like you had a great trip.
  18. Its not a major engineering change for Yamaha to add throttle body (I think they're called) EFI in place of the carbs, a sensor in the exhaust and a new computer which controls the EFI and ignition. I'll wait a while before declaring the RSTD dead. maybe whatever change is being done for the California RSV is holding up the RSTD. or There appears to be plenty of 2008 and 2009 RSTDs in dealer inventory right now. It would be a possible business decision not to introduce a 2010 RSTD until inventory levels are down.
  19. Good to know that bug will never do that again...
  20. The TD was what I was looking for. A smooth running motor, not a thumper. A reliable motor, unlike most air cooled Vtwins which need to be rebuilt every few years. Quite capable of comfortable cross country riding, although the windshield isn't as protective as a fairing. Its an excellant 1-up touring bike and good for 2-up short trips.
  21. sounds like maybe the blade got a bit dull. that could explain the heat.
  22. Glad you're here to tell us about it. Keep us posted on the further lab tests will you?
  23. You should be able to use a c-clamp to push back the old pads a bit. Does not require bleeding the brakes nor removing the rubber diaphram in the reservoir like the book says... unless of course the level of brake fluid is so high that pushing back the pistons will overflow the reservoir.
  24. Might want to talk to Dave (I think) at Rider's Hill on the Dahlonega bypass. He may do it for you. Thats a lot closer anyway.
  25. Looks like there was plenty of pig for everyone ! Wish I was there, maybe next year.....
