another possibility is your torque wrench is out of calibration. One more thing to check.

Good thought. My rear brake (shoes?) wasn't seated quite right after removing the rear wheel, and at first I thought I'd messed up the re-installation. But after a short ride and gently applying the brake a few times, it returned to normal.
-
I have to run mine with the choke on for several minutes. Always been that way since 0 miles.
-
No not normal. I used the factory spec of 111 foot pounds when I changed mine last month. The wheel doesn't spin easily though. It has to move the drive shaft and gears in the hub, so there's a lot of stuff to turn. This should probably be in its own new thread...

Welcome to the forum Fred. Yep, these are great bikes. Try to make Maintenance Day at Freebird's next summer so you can meet a lot of the members. re: back brakes. Well, you can lock up the rear wheel if you try hard, so I just think the design isn't quite what it should be. But rotating the pads is a 15 minute job, so is no biggy.

The easy way to check wheel alignment is to lay a yardstick or other long straightedge accross two spots of one side of the wheel/tire and see where it points.
-
Do you know if it does it without the hack?

I just created an account username=venturerider, password=venturerider seems to work ok, I'm downloading now. Got a message about doing 3 uploads, which I ignored and came back to this link and started the download ok.

Dave, I think the numbers you gave for reserve mileage are pretty close. A FAQ on the differences between the RSTD and the RSV would be good. The question comes up frequently. 1. fairing with CB, tape deck, speakers, intercom, and CD on 09 and later in side bag. 2. Top box with enhanced passenger seat w/ armrests and rear stereo speakers and antennas. 3. Pillow driver seat on RSV with different seat mounting bolts 4. Cruise control on/off on dash of RSV vs rt handlebar for RSTD 5. Gas low light on RSV, only flashing F and mileage count on ODO LCD for RSTD 6. 5.3 gallon fuel tank on RSTD vs 6 gallon tank on RSV 7. RSTD has removable windshield, Rear fender painted with removable rear seat and sissy bar. 8. handlebars are different

Could you provide a link to this 2-stroke Atkinson cycle design please? I looked and couldn't find it. I know Oak Ridge is experimenting with Atkinson cycle engines. Thanks RandyR
-
Ditto for my RSTD. The odometer switches to the "F" trip meter which starts flashing, which is what Dave is calling the count up.

This post makes me wonder if the spark advance for the 2nd gens is right? The only good reason to have to use high test gasoline is if one has a higher compression engine than the 2nd gens have. There is little difference in energy content of regular versus premium gasoline. They both contain about 111,400 British Thermal Units of energy per gallon. Octane is defined as a fuel's resistance to knocking. There is no benefit if the octane is higher than what the engine needs. Engine knock occurs when fuel in a combustion chamber ignites before it should. http://www.consumerenergycenter.org/transportation/consumer_tips/regular_vs_premium.html Has anyone with a Dyna3000 played with the high speed spark advance vs gas mileage?

Brake Resevoir Dumb, Dumb, BRAND NEW DUMB!!
RandyR replied to rumboogy's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
There is a line of colored brake fluid, comes in a couple different colors, so you can tell when a line is flushed with new fluid.. There was a post here about it earlier this year. http://www.tirerack.com/brakes/accessoryDetail.jsp?ID=21 -
NEWBIE Tech Questions
RandyR replied to rumboogy's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
A couple answers from an RSTD rider 3. The Yamaha specs for our engine says regular gas. Thats what most people use. re: a FAQ. There is a Tech section for the 2nd Gen and a general Tech section and a Tech library. Those are pretty much equivalent to a FAQ -
Ok, You're after TartanTerror. The tool should work for all 1st and 2nd Gens and early Vmax. I don't know if the new Vmax is the same on top? Anyone know?

Cute pup Jack. You'll need to get a side car so he can ride along...

Scotty I guess this is the list. Earl (skydoc) can forward it on to you when he's done. It has an assortment of shims, a shim tool, both a magnet for pulling out the shims and a pick made from a churchkey by Dingy, and a shim chart/map by Dingy which you can copy (also posted here on the forum). I ask that shims used be replaced and as many used shims as possible left over be placed in the kit so the kit grows a bit each time its used to make it easy on the next guy. Your own shims should be shuffled around as much as possible as first choice, then dip into the kit. Dingy needed a large qty of 2.70 shims which was unexpected, I had 2 of them, but 4 each of the next 4 smaller sizes which was what my reading led me to believe would be the most heavily used as valves tightened up and required smaller shims. I will want the kit back for the Georgia Maintenance Day in April if it keeps travelling after you're done. RandyR
-
Earl, Glad to see it put to use. Dingy can send it on to you. Please PM him your address.
-
If anyone is going to need a valve shim kit and tool in the next week or so, let me know. Dingy has borrowed mine and he could ship it to someone else as easy as he could send it back to me. Its good for 1st gens and 2nd gens.

About 5 years ago the quicky oil place my dad was using failed to put any oil in his car. He got about 5 miles before the engine seized up. They paid to have the engine rebuilt.
-
Its easy to add a tach, I've put one on my RSTD. You really don't want the engine running much below 3,000 rpm. Thats 70mph in 5th gear. At 45mph I'm just starting to think about shifting from 3rd to 4th.
