Baron Tach and Ponch's gauge set
RandyR replied to Sideoftheroad's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
These seem pricey, but multi-function. Maybe cheaper if they could be bought without the housings? http://www.dakotadigital.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=results/category_id=60/home_id=60/mode=cat/cat60.htm- 51 replies

The whine lot of people talk about is in the clutch basket. Apparently the design will have a 'noise' at some speed, and on both my RSTD and RSV it seems to happen at about 65 mph where I ride a lot. Changing the basket to an revision "I" basket may lower the noise and/or move it to another speed. It appears to be the tolerances of the parts in the clutch and basket. Noise #2. straight cut gears. They're inherently noisy. The good news is, they appear to be strong enough to handle an 800lb motorcycle well. Noise #3. chirping in the rear wheel. The pins into the rear wheel from the pumpkin (rear gear hub) get dry and make a chiping noise. Lube them when you put on a new rear tire. Sounds bad? Go take another any-size motorcycle of any brand out for a demo ride. You'll find it has various noises too.

Good luck Taters..... heal fast.

Those of us that have a Venture or Tour Deluxe, we've got it good already. Could it be better? maybe, but any improvements would be marginal. The improvement I would most like is better fuel economy at 75mph, but the fuel injected bikes I've looked at aren't getting significantly better mileage over their carb counterparts in the same weight/engine range.

Is there an on-line web page for the Smith's gauges? I looked and couldn't find a catalog. Smiths are what my 900cc Triumph uses, but I can't find a general catalog of their gauges.- 51 replies

Baron Tach and Ponch's gauge set
RandyR replied to Sideoftheroad's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Ponch, I'd like to put a set of gauges in my Millennium. Steve Wagner is going to be painting a new radiator grill for me so he said he could paint the gauge plate at the same time. I want to add a tach. Optimally I'd like a 3 gauge set with one of the Smiths dual oil/water temp gauges, volt meter, and tach. Has anyone found a good 1-1/2 inch tach yet? I wouldn't be opposed to a combo digital gauge of some kind as part of the mix. second part of the question. If we can work together to figure out what I need and get the base plate painted in time. Is putting in a set of gauges something that could be done on Saturday at Freebird's maintenance day, if I do the work and you do the supervising? tia- 51 replies

Valve noise on a 08 Rstd with less than 1000 miles
RandyR replied to live2ridejp's topic in Watering Hole
no such issue with my 08 RSTD. I'd start with the same questions someone else asked, what oil and filter did you use? -
Yamalube, Clutch Slip???
RandyR replied to Ga Dawg's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Earl, member skydoc_17 has some clutch kits in the classified section. I haven't worked on mine yet, but it looks like a relatively easy 2hr job. -
I can't imagine drilling on the ocean floor and not having a device to automatically cut off the flow if there is an emergency. Maybe that's more difficult than my simple mind imagines?

Yamalube, Clutch Slip???
RandyR replied to Ga Dawg's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I used Yamalube a couple times in my RSTD and had no clutch problems. I'm running Rotella T now because I can get it easily at Walmart. -
If you sell much using paypal, you can get one of their debit cards. Then just use it like any other debit card to buy groceries or gasoline, etc.

member Dingy had a recent post with pictures of the engine out and transmission apart. That should give you a feel for the magnitude of the work involved.

actually there is a bigger variety of compatible sealed beams than there is H3 type bulbs, I discovered after buying H3's for my RSTD.

I think you may be pushing it to run both a pair of 35w passing lamps and a pair of 50w fog lamps.

I think this has been pointed out before. But the only sure fire deer repellent is to hang a hunting license and orange cap on the front of the bike...
