Thats pretty much it in a nutshell Just make sure that you let the loctite dry 1st before you put the front axle in or you'll never get the axle shaft out again! -
By 2001 they all had the reinforcement plates on them, the '99 and '00 years had kits to retrofit them. I have a rear trunk base for a 2nd gen, but it will have to be painted to match your bike. The one for $575 will be a factory matched paint job, and to be honest with you, unless you are very handy with a paint gun and have a place to do it. Your probably realistically looking at $500 to buy a bottom, the paint, take it in, and have it painted. This is unless the one your looking at on eBay is already in the color you want....

Lynn, What I would do is install a Helicoil in the fork. You'll obviously have to match the thread size up, run a tap through it, and install the Helicoil, which I suggest that you Loctite with the red stuff so it doesn't come out. Go back through the Helicoil after the Loctite is dry with the tap to make sure it's clean and install the axle shaft. The torque on the front axle is 56 ft lbs, the pinch bolt torque is 13 ft lbs There are options for you on this, dont sweat it, I have repaired LOTS of heavy equipment using Helicoils and they are still working today.

Paul, I know you mentioned you wanted to keep the class system, and thats ok. I hate them, especially after having to work on every single 1st gen I have owned with the class on it (that would be 5) You may want to consider going with a manual fill set up. I have done this on 3 of the 5 1st gens I owned. It's stupid simple, and really can't leave you stranded (Which is why I dont like the system) I have some class parts, if you would like a specific item let me know and we'll see if we can hook you up. -

Mike, How I usually do it is like this, I bleed the rear caliper 1st off, get solid flow out of it, if using a vacuum bleeder. Then I will go up top by the steering head (on the MKII's) and bleed there. Go down to the left front and bleed that. If it's a 1200 I'll tackle the anti dives after the front left caliper, this is all with a vac bleeder. I'll then do an old fashion petal bleed, pump it up hold pressure and crack the bleeder. I'll do this several times until I get a solid flow of fluid out of the bleeders. I like to use clear hose so I can see if any bubbles are coming out. It can get a bit tedious as it sometimes will take a bit of time, but I never have to worry about if the brakes are right or not. A vacuum bleeder is a must if your going to do brake fluid maintenance on your bikes, be it 1st or 2nd gens. I do the same things when I bleed a clutch, vac bleed it, and then old fashion pressure bleed. Give me a call if you run into problems, my new # is in my profile -
Are you sure it's oil? could it be brake fluid from the slave cylinder for the clutch?

FWIW... I have had 5 1st gens and 3 2nd gens, if you have a shimmy in the 2nd gen something is wrong and it needs to be fixed. There is a learning curve when going from a 1st gen to a 2nd. I have put better than 50K on both gens, hands down for me the G2 is a much more comfortable ride for myself and my wife. As far as nimble, yes the 1st gen is a bit better in the twisties, but I can guarantee you that a 1st gen will not walk away from a G2 with someone that knows how to ride it. Personally my knees dont like the petal position with my feet under me on the 1st gens anymore. I am hurting more on longer rides on the 1st gen than I ever have been on the G2. They are 2 TOTALLY different machines with the only thing in common is the V4 powerplant. They are both great machines, but the next one I will own is going to be another G2 when I get my funds in order....

I know some will disagree, but I wouldn't recommend Direct to anyone I have had it for 4 months now, billing is still not right, never was from the start. The guy who was selling it reminded me of a used car salesman. I have 4 pages of people that I have talked to trying to get the problem straitened out. I had Charter Communications at the old house and had ZERO issues with them. The price was awesome and like mentioned had no problems. I know your probably out in the boonies and can't get cable, thats the position I'm in also. If Direct keeps screwing me around I simply will cancel it and not bother having tv besides a local antenna....

The MKI's aren't very good, the MKII's are better and some, like myself have installed R1's on our MKII's. Going with Stainless braided brake lines is a good idea to improve the braking performance on the MKI's
