What all did you replace, when you do a starter clutch you usually have to replace the housing where the sprag pins are as it is usually cracked and thats what causes it to skip. Whenever I have done them in the past I closely look at the 72 tooth gear and make sure it's near perfect. Look at the gear on the starter motor for the same, and replace the rest with new. Get ahold of Dano in Indianapolis as he has sold an upgraded starter clutch kit that works great.

So sorry to hear this Owen, I dont have any patience for people who drive without insurance. Cost us no matter what, either more for uninsured/underinsured or loosing a vehicle because they dont have anything. I would push it legally just for the principle of it, although you probably wont get a dime....I wont get started with that rant. I'm glad your relatively ok Buddy, perhaps a nice M&E after the holidays is in order

Now I'm fairly confident that I didn't have to remove the stator cover, just the middle gear cover. I changed out the one on my '86 and I think the only thing I pulled off was the mid gear cover. Now some CRS might be slipping in here, but I remember having to do a triple sow cow with it to remove it, but it wasn't a huge deal. Try the mid cover 1st and see if you can't slip it out like that...or you could come to north of Houston and I'll help you change it, feed you and give you a comfortable bed to sleep in...

New rear tire...
Squidley replied to PuttPutt's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Miles, Depending upon what Venom you purchase some of them have a sidewall pressure on the rear of 50lbs. They are not all the same as other mfgrs, so look at what the sidewall states as max and go according to that..... Hey Fuzzy & Mike, okay...I hear you guys, but...50 psi is TOO high of pressure for the back tire of your bikes. You may in fact have had success, but...you will most likely do better with a lower psi, like 40 to 42 psi. Really ! I hear you that you are happy with the mileage, performance, etc. of the tires are 50 psi, but...(a lot of buts in here), you can do better than you have been. -
Thanks for the link Brian, thats just what I'm looking for. A nice simple gauge thats liquid filled. My '79 is a Shovelhead, and is about as old school as they come. No front brake lever switch for the brake light, the rear petal is all that controls that. It didn't have an oil light, the PO had a gauge, but I didn't really care for it and it was the cheap plastic tubing type you can get at any autoparts store. Now to find a SS braided line to hook it all up...Thanks again

I have a question for the brethren, it's about my Harley. As some of you know I have a '79 FLH Electra Glide that I'm working on getting back on the road. I want to install an oil pressure gauge onto it, it had a cheap one, with the plastic compression fitting tubing. I want to put a good quality oil filled gauge that will stand up to the vibrator. I also want to use a braided stainless line from the oil pump up to the gauge which will fit up in the fairing or on the handle bars. If y'all have some links or personal experience I'd love to hear from you. I have 2, 4 day weekends coming up for Christmas and New Years and 1 of those weekends are going to be spent doing nothing but working on my Harley....Thanks in advance for your help with this

I take offense to that statement, I am a 2 wheel transportation enthusiast!

Whoever told you that doesn't know very much about front triple trees. There MIGHT be a newer suspension I dont know about that MIGHT have tubes that slide in the trees, but for every bike I have worked on, the tubes are slid into the trees and tightened down. If this said person has info on a new suspension setup on a bike I would LOVE to see it

It was kept civil, and thats the reason it was let go as long as it was. I totally agree that it was NOT the thread to start that debate in, but we let it go for a bit. As always, thank you to all that posted condolences in it, it is a shame that it happened and you can be sure a hornets nest is being shaken around the country regardless of which side of the gun debate you are on. You folks did very well not taking it over the cliff, we are all very passionate about issues. In the USA gun control is a huge red button, so y'all should be commended for doing a great job of keeping it under control

Outstanding brother, it makes all the times you were "totally unreasonable" worth the effort you put into it....good on all of you folks!

This is somewhat of a specific geographical question, so bear with me. Has anyone that lives down south in the constant hotter climates, installed a Buckeye stator and had problems with it failing? The reason I ask this, is that I purchased a stator and installed it with a new R/R and it appears that the stator has failed due to it running hot because of the wire size it was wound with. Have any of you installed the Buckeye and ran into this problem? I dont want to have to do this again, and I dont mind paying for quality. How happy have y'all been with the performance you have received from the upgraded Buckeye stator?

Keep up the good work Dennis, I know it has to suck, but push your way through it. Had a guy at work get his replaced, he tripped on one of the steps one day and went down on his knee, not directly, but stretched all that scar tissue out. He said his eyes rolled in his head it hurt so bad, and he thought he ruined all the work. Come to find out within about 2 hours he had some pain, but a lot more range of motion....good luck with it all bud

Lonna and I did the Walmart strait talk a few years back. When we moved into our new place here in the spring we couldn't hardly use our phones due to lack of coverage (T-mobile) We switched to AT&T Go Phones unlimited talk and text for $50 a month. The signal is great here at the house and I damn near always have a signal as it's run off all the AT&T towers. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to get of a contract....

Greg, I have a class system in the garage with the rear hose if I'm not mistaken. I will try very diligently tomorrow to take a pic of it and see if it has that hose. BTW the pressure I usually run on the 1st gen shocks is 14 in the front and depending on how I'm traveling in the back shock (Solo) about 40 (2 up) about 55 (2 up loaded bike) closer to 70, I'm 5' 11" and weigh about 280

Mark, You know I love you brothers and sisters up north...but my days of playing in the snow are DONE!

Not to dampen your outlook, but I will never buy another GM product again. The wife has an '04 Buick Rainier, same drivetrain and everything as the Trailblazers and Envoys. Right out of the gate we had electrical problems with it. Right now the front seats which are the 2 position switched kind, works when it wants to. The All Wheel drive is jacked up and I removed the front driveshaft just so it could be driven. All sorts of bells and whistles, which I believe makes up most the electrical gremlins. The only good thing I have to say about the thing is the inline 6 engine. Lots of power and torque, pulls great, but 18 mpg at best period. If there is anyway you can get out of this Envoy....do it....

That white stuff sure is pretty...up north!

Good luck with your surgery, I know all about the man upstairs keeping one here for something else after crashing a '99 at 75 mph....heal up quick.

Compression Check
Squidley replied to MasterGuns's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I too have always tested them cold, it was instructed to me that it would give a true idea if things were starting to wear. If you had a trouble cylinder, squirt a little oil in and that would suggest that the rings may be worn. I have always gone by 10% difference between the cylinders, take the highest reading and the lowest and if the difference is less than 10% thats good. Throttle wide open and crank till the needle quits moving.....- 13 replies
