Kevin, If we call it Kentucky for next year and you want some additional help, I'll be glad to help you on the committee if you would like.

Did I kill my battery?
Squidley replied to KevinR's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I would charge the battery up, out of the bike, to a full charge again. Then I would take it in and have it load tested, they have to be fully charged to be sure the load test is correct. That will give you a general health indicator of your battery. If it's good, I would start looking for an issue that could be draining your system. If it's not good, buy another battery... -
What did I do?
Squidley replied to HStocker's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
It grinds if you have the clutch pulled and in a gear? If thats the case, it sounds more internal to me and something that you are probably going to have to break into the engine and check out. I would open the clutch cover 1st and look at the basket and clutch pack.... -

Buckeye HO upgraded stator
Squidley replied to Squidley's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I believe I found the culprit in this whole fiasco. One of the phase leads seems to have a small ball of solder at it's connection point. It has pushed through the casing and is sticking out for all the world to see. Once I push it on the case completely, it makes contact and thus giving me all the issues. I'm still sending it back, and unless they absolutely wont give me a refund, I'll still go with a buckeye. Here is a pic that I took of the problem child... -
What did I do?
Squidley replied to HStocker's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have been thinking about it too and you 2 are probably on track. I have also seen where the shaft broke at the u joint coming out of the case, where the rubber driveshaft boot is. -
Not really, you can either bleed it the old fashion way or use a vacuum bleeder which is lots faster. If you have questions my # is in my profile

Do a fluid change on the clutch, matter of fact, do it on all the brakes as well. If the problem persists get with Skydoc 17 and do a clutch upgrade....

I can tell you that I WONT do that again. Thats was one of the biggest pita's I ever did. I was amazed that the Ft. Collins rally went as well as it did. I can handle doing one in Texas as I can go and scout things out. If we decide that we want to do an earlier rally, like end of April beginning of May, I might jump into the abyss again.

Yeah I know this is the watering hole, but some 2nd genners may have this.... I am looking for a set of Progressive front fork springs for the '83 I have in the stable. I know that I can go buy a set for about $90 delivered, but I figured if one of the members here had a set they didn't, or aren't going to use, and I can save a few bucks in the process then that would be a good thing. If anyone has a set they want to part with shoot me a PM and we can chat

You folks are so excitable with these things!

I have had guys wave to me like that on a bike, you know they just bought it or this is there 1st "Real" bike

What did I do?
Squidley replied to HStocker's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I wouldn't hazard to guess, but it doesn't sound good. The motor will start and run though? Unless something in the clutch system went, I can't imagine you scattering all the gears in the transmission all at once, but there is a 1st time. Drain the oil and see if there is a lot of metal shavings that come out. If there is, I would probably start to look for another engine. If thats the case, and you want to install another engine in your bike, I have an '85 parts bike with a complete engine in it. -
Jeff, When you retire maybe you can look into moving to that area of the country

Buckeye HO upgraded stator
Squidley replied to Squidley's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I dug this thread back up as today I finally said I am going to get this '86 back together. I did just that, but with sorry results. I can say, that right now, I will not recommend a Ricks Hot Shot stator to you folks here. I sent the old one back, the one that grounded out to the case and didn't work properly. I will say this for Ricks, they gave me zero issues with sending it back. Unfortunately they did not fix the issue as I received the same stator back with them stating that they fixed it....their fix didnt work. Like a dumb arse I didn't bother to check the leads before I reinstalled the cover and all. Got it all hooked up, new battery installed and connected and fired it up....nothing, the same grounding issue as the last time. I was not happy and made Italians proud of some of the curse words I used. I have an '85 parts bike here and pulled the side cover off it after I checked to be sure that it's stator wasn't grounded to the case, it wasn't, so I installed it on the '86 and guess what...it pushed out 13.6 volts. This is a bike (the '85) that has been sitting for god knows how many years and it's on my '86 now charging it. I am done with Ricks Motorsports, I dont know if it was a lack of communication on my behalf, or they had someone say that it was fixed and didn't know what they were doing, but I can't afford these kinds of mistakes. I also received the wrong R/R the 1st time and they did end up sending me the right one when they sent the stator back to me. I am more than likely going to get with Rick H at Buckeye and see about getting one of his stators. I have installed them before and the one thing I didn't like was the wires coming through the case block were too small and they leaked on 2 of the bikes I installed them on. I'll be sure to remedy that before I install it on the bike. So there you have it, I want to let y'all know to use Ricks Motorsport at your own risk. I wont recommend them as there have been too many issues with myself and I just have lost faith in them and their ability to get this right.... -
The international rallys started in '07 when I hosted the Ft. Collins Colorado one. '08 was in Kitchener Ontario Canada. '09 was down in Arkansas at The Hub. '10 was the 5th anniversary back at Potato Creek south of Southbend Indiana, '11 was Cody Wyoming, '12 was Western New York and now '13 was Galena Illinois. The reasons that the rallys are predominantly held in late July early August is folks with kids don't have to worry about their youngun's being in school. The weather is in a fairly stable mode for most of the country. It's tough having a rally in the south during the summer for obvious reasons. I would LOVE to host a rally here in Texas, there are some great roads to ride in the Texas hill country, the 3 sisters to name one, or 3 such as it is. Only problem is were in triple digits right now and folk from the North would cook as you just dont immediately get used to this heat. Personally, I would love to see one in Tennessee Eastern TN is beautiful, but so is the West side of the state. Kentucky as well, I know there are some great well kept secret roads there. Like mentioned, someone has to step up and fill some very big shoes. It is a huge undertaking and you need a group that can work well together. It's not for the faint of heart and you will beat your head on a wall from time to time. In the end, when you see the smiles on everyones faces, and hear the stories, thats the pay off. So who is willing to fill those shoes for the next one....

I down shift 2 gears, make a hard left and powerslide the rear wheel around. Then I punch the throttle and pull the front wheel off the ground. I speed up on them waving wildly and see if they stop or run like hell because they think I'm a lunatic .....sometimes I just wave

Rex, Are you trying to load them from a host like photo bucket, or with the websites software? If you want you can PM me and I'll walk you through how to load them on the site, or you can email them to me and I'll install them in your thread here.

Just like Jeff mentioned EBC HH pads. The rear ones you dont have to take the caliper off, although you may want to being your 1st time playing with it. The front have to come off, but it's not bad. If you run into problems of have any questions my # is in my profile, good luck with getting after it

Mike, Larry was at the International Rally in Galena and I'll bet is still not home yet. He will answer you as soon as he makes it home, I am certain of that... -
You mention that you replaced plugs and wires, did you also replace the spark plug caps? There is a small resistor in them that gets corroded and can cause a lot of grief. Also too, the pick up coils are in the stator case and could also be a culprit (there are 2 of them in the '84) There is a 6 wire connector on the left side of the bike that hooks the coils into the wiring harness. Check that for issues, my '86 had a bad set of pick up coils and it would cause 1 of the coils to not fire due to bad wire connections.
