The only thing I want to pass on here is know what your buying. There are guys on Ebay that are making a killing on items like this. They will buy them for $20 and sell them for $60 plus shipping. I'm all about folks making money, but that is just plain screwing folks. Not trying to sound preachy here, but reaserch what it is that you might want to buy. Ebay is not the place it used to be and I have seen used items sell for more than you can buy them new. Some of the folks that sell on ebay could care less about screwing you. And I already here folks yelling at me on their computers. Yes there are people out there that will buy something just because they think it's a deal on Ebay. I just hate when folks will screw someone else and pray on them being oblivious of other options. Sorry about stealing this thread for a minute, I just dont want to see anyone getting unnessecarily screwed when there are other options available at a lesser cost.....Off Rant

Great news my friend....we are looking forward to seeing you soon

I agree with changing the plugs, Ventures dont run good after fouling plugs. I agree with JT in that I use a whole can of Seafoam in a tankful, dont dilute it. When you get fresh gas and Seafoam in it, get on the expressway and run the hell out of it 70 mph+ Most times I have found that if you run them like you hate them they purrrr

I'm not positive on the cause of it, most likely the nut loosening up and not keeping everything tight. I have seen it on several different years, so it's not just a set year that has it. I will say that it is rare and nothing to be worried about. Just keep the u joint greased and do your maintenance and more that likely you'll never see it. Yes, the bike can still be ridden as most folks dont know what the noise is. The fella that I diagnosed came 60 miles on his to my place and I rode it and then quite by accident saw oil leaking from the seal/boot area and pulled the boot back to see it. He rode it 60 miles back home and then proceeded to tear it apart and fix it.

Denny, Here are a few trailer pics that I have. The 1st ones are of a trailer that Dragonrider sold for a friend. The Diamondplate one is one I built out of a truck utility box. I customized it with Lights off a 1st gen, Marcarl owns it now. The last pic is the setup my wife and I rode through the dragon with...trailer and all. Just for an idea of how it performs, we have put better than 20000 miles on that trailer pulling it behind several different Ventures

I helped a Michigan member with a "noise" on his 1st gen. It turned out to be that the output shaft where the u joint and driveshaft hook up to was broken. I have heard of this happening a few times and he ended up removing the engine and replacing the shaft. http://www.starmotorcycles.com/star/parts/home.aspx Put in the pertinant info and go to middle drive gear. It's part # 4 in the drawing.

Robert, Many of us use the Kuryakyn trunk bag on the top of the trunk rack http://www.kuryakyn.com/products.asp?bn=honda&ci=2811 Yamaha also makes one but it's the same thing as the Kuryakyn and costs more

Cool Beans!!! Good on all 3 of you, have fun with your new one

John, 1st gen chrome is hard to find and if it's in good shape you will pay top dollar for it. Ebay is the only place that I know of that consistantly has 1st gen parts On a 1st gen you have to be creative and fabricate your own stuff.

I agree with you Jerry, different strokes for different folks. It's kinda like an oil thread

Denny, Just a quick question, how much money do you think your going to spend making it? The reason I ask this is because you might be surprised that after it's done you spent more than perhaps buying one outright. I have built several trailers for myself and other members. A minimum of $450 is a good number to keep in mind. There are lots of extras that can pop up. I dont know if you have looked at the Piggy Backer, but it is a nice trailer for reasonable money http://piggybacker.stehltow.com/ I dont know how handy you are, it could get over your head quick, I'm not saying that to be mean. Just that I have been fabricating for many years, and would hate to see you pull your hair out. I have some pics that I have to dig up...let me see what I can come up with. Here is another site about building, it's a bit dated, but gives good advise http://www.gadgetjq.com/trailer.htm

As was mentioned, there will be lots of replies, and most of them different. I am no expert, but I do sometimes speak my mind here ...so here goes. I love Avons...Period I have has 3 sets of them on 3 different bikes and they handle fantastic for me. I dont get the marathon miles out of them as I like to play in the twisties when I'm alone on the bike. They stick like glue and my Ventures has handled way better with them than all the others I have had. My last set of tires on my '99 were the Michelin Commanders....and the rear one blew out at 75 mph, and totalled the bike....no more Michelins for me I have had a set of the Dunlop Elite II's on a 1st gen, they are a decent tire, but were loudest of all I have run. They are a harder compound and will get good mileage, but they dont stick as well as I would like them to. Metzler 880's Had a set on mt 1st '99 and they were a reasonable tire. They stuck well and were pretty quiet, but I personally know of a half dozen folks who had chunks come out of the 880's....I wont run Metzlers either for that reason. There are lots of variables that go into purchasing tires. How you ride is a big factor. If your a highway man and just pound the hell out of the miles on the superslabs, the Dunlops get decent mileage. But if you like to get it down in the twisties...I dont know that I would want them. My Dunlops always seemed to follow cracks and tar snakes in the road, thats annoying. My bike will forever be with Avon venoms on them, of all the tires I have tried, they perform the best for my riding. So you really need to figure out what type of rider you are and go from there. BTW....They should throw all Bridgestones out of the country, worst tire I have ever seen or ridden on a Venture.....OK off my soapbox now
