help with valves
Squidley replied to bkuhr's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Usually your compression test should be within 10% from highest to lowest. Your highest being 180 and lowest being 150 30 lb difference is almost 20%. It's a crapshoot now, 150 is decent compression, but Murphys Law can always rear it's head. What kind of miles are on the bike and how long do you think your going to try and keep it.... -
A few maintenance questions
Squidley replied to Karl C.'s topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Karl, 1st off welcome to the forum, lots of info here. Make sure you know about the search bar up top along the header as you can find anything posted on the site through it. I have used the Rotella T in 6 of my 7 Ventures with no issues. My new '08 when I had it went to Synthetic as soon as it had it's 1st oil change. I would not switch over to syn as your gaskets on that bike are 27 years old and I would bet $100 bill that they would start leaking as soon as the syn cleaned out the sludge in the engine. The hoses are subjective, depending upon how the bike was stored and cared for. Yamaha is the only way to get them, but I have ordered through Zanotti H/D in Butler PA with very good results and prices. Factory mirrors are nice on the Venture, ebay is the best bet, if you ask some of the members here have parts bikes and might let a set of them go. I would look at spending $75 to $100 for a set and that would be a fair price depending on condition. Let us know if we can help you out further, enjoy the site. -
Henry, Nice work for sure and I couldn't agree with Earl more. I want to add 1 thing and this is by no means a slam. You might want to consider some sort of electric brake system for your trailer. The '85 brake system on your bike is poor by design and you are getting to the spot where the trailer is almost half the bikes weight just being empty. As cool as it is, you really need top be able to stop safely with it

Nice Job Patrick! Were you coal there or biofuel and is it 3rd class license or stationary engineer? I know all too well what they put you through, perhaps someday I'll get back into a powerhouse. I really loved my job and miss the fellas I worked with.

MPG After Carb Mod
Squidley replied to SoldierBoy55B's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Not that I doubt anyone that claims upper 40's in MPG, I know quite a few of you personally and dont doubt your integrity for 1 second. What is baffling to me is that in all the 7 Ventures that I have owned I have NEVER got any better than 42 mpg. That was gotten with me babying it. Now I have never shimmed the needles on any of the ones that I have owned, but I think the '89 that Cliff just bought off me will get this shim kit as that bike usually gets about 35 mpg at best and I would like to see if there is any improvement with it -
I have done it in both places, it's tight behind the plate, but doable.

Jerry, I see that your using a U-joint for the pivot, this will take a lot of that twisting away as it gives the motion a place to go and be absorbed. The Venturedad hitch is pretty solid, and the mounts are tied into the entire rear end section of the bikes fender and frame. As long as your concious about how you pack it and where to distribute the weight I dont think it will be an issue. You might also want to contact Dray on the site here as he and have talked extensively over the phone on building a single wheel trailer. He is almost done with his

Great looking ride folks, good to see the Northeners getting out. I also noticed a sack of taters on that ride, nothing like some wind in your face to speed up the healing process....nice work on getting it set up Tom Can you believe that, I actually complimented you!

MPG After Carb Mod
Squidley replied to SoldierBoy55B's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
12 MPG! That is unreal, glad that it worked out for you that way, I have never heard of that big a gain with the needle shim -
Well when youn get the chance...post up some pics All the best to you both, I dont envy anyone trying to start a business in this economy

Hey Fish man....why dont you come down here to Texas so I can take a good look at it. You may scoff at the trailer now, but I'll tell you what, for traveling far distances on extended trips it's a lot safer than trying to load, or should I say overload the bike with stuff. That is a decent price for that rig in Canada, nice job on the score....enjoy it buddy!

Ben, I can relate to your senitments about your Dad hurting, but please dont push it on yourself in any way. We all know the risks everytime we get on a bike and just like you, your Dad wated to go with you. I know that doesn't help much, but you folks are in our thoughts. Stay strong for your dad, he'll get through this as will you...if you need something, ask of us for it, were here for you my friend.

Damn....now I feel abused and unwanted Kenny will set you up right Chief, he's a decent wrench turner himself and isn't afraid to break someone elses bike Your still more than welcome to head over to Conroe (yeah new digs ) whenever you want to. Make sure that you scuff up the steels between the friction discs good and soak the new full size friction disc in oil for a few hours before the install. Looking forward to seeing you again soon

Had a little bike problem following some harleys
Squidley replied to Chaharly's topic in Watering Hole
CJ, Your '85 is going to have individual springs, so you could just replace the springs it it with some Barnetts for about $30 I would hazard to guess. Pull the clutch pac apart and clean the steels as I'm sure they are glazed. If you have the means to sandblast the steels thats even better. Your friction discs will be fine, I have NEVER in all the Ventures I have done clutch upgrades to had a friction disc show wear that made it not to be within tolerance. There is a write up in the tech library and it's pretty easy to do.
