Spark Plug troubles...
Monty replied to Ivan's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Well, I removed the resistors from the plug caps, and cut a piece of 8 gauge copper wire to take their place. The bike starts sooo much better now. I still have the popping/surging though, and after troubleshooting everything else, I have about determined it's the pickup coils. Some read twice what they're supposed to. Resistor plugs with copper wire inserts in the caps=win! -

RFI=Radio Frequency Interference EMI=ElectroMagnetic Interference. -
I didn't mean for these. I meant are you going to do an auction this year?

Spark Plug troubles...

Well, why are the stock plugs resistor type? The manual shows a DPR8EA-9, and it even says resistor type in the manual. -
Are you doing the auction again this year? I am glad so many here support St. Judes. I have an automatic payroll deduction setup to St Judes, so I don't forget to send it in every payday.

They have a new word for it now. They're called a "Manther". That way us guys have a cat name too....sorta.

Thanks for all the good suggestions. Many of them have already been done, but not all. I am going to tear into it big time this weekend, and hopefully I'll get it sorted out.

OK, the plugs I used were Champion RA6HC. I used those because I wanted a 5/8 head instead of 18mm. http://www.sparkplugs.com/more_info.asp?AAIA=1103724&pid=4421 The old plugs were NGK DPR8EA-9. http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/3/13/123/18709/ITEM/NGK-DPR8EA-9---Spark-Plug.aspx The factory plugs are resistor type. Did you even see where I said the tach started messing up at the same time this problem started? They are most probably related. Which coil does it get the tach signal from? Do I have to remove the fairing to get the TCI and coils off?

I just put a new set of resistor plugs in it today. The plugs I took out weren't fouled. Air filter is good. I can idle, and drive fine up the driveway, at just above idle. Above that, it starts missing. Revving it in neutral produces a miss at higher rpm's. When it misses, it has a sort of "thump" sound. Does not run hot. I also forgot to mention that the tach went to being erratic and sometimes non-operational when this all started. I know it doesn't seem to add up...that's why I decided to ask for help on here. I am usually a pretty good mechanic. I am just stumped right now. I am leaning toward coils/TCI.

As I said, I replaced the fuel filter. I added a half can of Sea foam. I checked the diaphragms...good. I took the screw out and drained all the carbs, then blew carb cleaner back in there and rinsed them out. It isn't flooding or fouling the plugs real bad, but is it going thru fuel like crazy, with it missing so bad. Burned half a tank in just about 10 miles.

My '83 Venture is running bad....really bad. It had sat for 3 weeks. I got it out one day to ride, and it went to missing under load. It starts and idles fine. I checked out the fuel system...it's good. I replaced the spark plugs I replaced the fuel filter. Plug wires and caps check good. cleaned connectors to stator, regulator and TCI. When I ride it, it tries to go...has full power for a few secs, then sputters, and falls on its' nose. Under load, it just jerks back and forth. Backfires out the right side exhaust sometimes too. Like I said, it starts and idles fine...it's only under load. It looks like I have to remove my fairing to remove the TCI/coil assembly...is this correct? I had removed the airbox and battery box, and it seems the fairing has to come off next. Help!!

I just had new pieces welded onto both of the rears...works great. -
Hate to hear it. It's always hard to lose such a really good friend. At least you haven't moved yet, and you and Lonna can be there to comfort his family when they need it most. It helps to have good friends like you around to help deal with it all.

Does anyone know which Ram mount I need to fit a 1st gen, and use with a Garmin Nuvi? I have looked at several, but I want to make sure I order the right one. Link and model # please.

Good on ya!!

Oldest son just got home from MEPS. He's all sworn in, and doesn't leave until November 16th. He is going to Ft. Sill too.
-
We had both of them out of the house for a while, then one quit college, and one got divorced. Needless to say, they both moved back in. They both got $15,000 bonuses and will get a paycheck now, so I already told them they need to find their own places after basic and AIT. They will get done sometime early next year, and then be back in town.(Army National Guard).

Glad you're recovering quickly. Here's hoping that the spot on the lung is nothing to worry about. Good luck!
-
Glad to hear you're doing ok, although I hate it about the vision going. I guess you will have to get a VR eyepatch for it. Hang in there. Who knows, it may clear up later on....stranger things have happened.
-
Glad to hear it. He's probably gotten his butt kicked several times already since he's been there. Who knows....he MAY NOT make it 13 years.
-
Thanks everyone. I'm sure he's second guessing by now too. I think we all did. I know he didn't get much sleep last night, seeing as they didn't even get to Ft. Sill until around midnight. He probably got about 3 hours, and then they come in banging on a trash can to wake you up....lol My other son is leaving for basic soon also. He would have went with his younger brother, but they had to approve his tattoos, so it held him up a few weeks. He is down at the Memphis MEPS right now, swearing in.
-
Well, my youngest arrived at Ft. Sill yesterday, to start his basic training. That's the same place I went for my basic and AIT. At least it should be cooling off there a little bit. Bet he's lovin' life by now....lol:scared:

This weekend is the International Boss Hoss Rally, and Mid-South Motorcycle Festival here in Paris, Tn. Great food, drink and lots of bikes. I have even met up with some Venture Riders, but only one that used to be a member here. I took a few pics... http://s74.photobucket.com/albums/i274/13thAFMonterey/th_IMG_0034.jpg

That is the proper fix right there.
