2nd Gen Rear brake life
Monty replied to SpaceMan's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I'm glad that swapping the pads around works for so many. I don't think I will try that, as I was always taught that it's not good to reverse the direction of the pads. After spending so many miles with all of the heat and pressure forcing the pad material in one direction, and then forcing it the other way can possibly break the pad loose from the steel backing plate. I have seen this happen on cars, and I am not willing to take that chance on my bike. Just my . -
Good luck, and have a safe trip there and back.

My son and I were following a concrete truck today on our bikes. He was hauling tail, and We didn't want to go fast enough to stay in front of him. We just laid back, and kept an eye out. Sure enough, we hear what sounded like a loud shotgun blast, and small pieces were flying everywhere. The gator was still on the tire, flapping around, but small pieces went all over the road. My son got hit with a small piece, but no damage. The truck pulled over on the shoulder, and we were outta there!

I love reading history. Kids today are missing out on soooo much.

It means you're riding too many boring roads. Keep to the twisties, and she'll stay awake.

We had a 72 year old local man die Wednesday. He was a few miles up into Kentucky, and wasn't wearing his helmet. He was on his new '09 Kawasaki. He was following 2 slow moving cages, one was driven by an 87 year old woman. He tried to pass them, and at the same time, she turned left into a driveway with no turn signal. He was forced to lay it down, and slid into the van, hitting his head on the door...killing him. He should have known better...the helmet would have cushioned the blow.

I changed the fork oil today. I added 13.5 ounces of oil to each fork, and then added 7lbs of air to the forks. It still has some bounce, but not too bad. I still have a wobble around 75-80 mph. I can make the bike wobble by just wiggling on the seat a little bit. It shouldn't wobble near that much. The steering head feels tight. I guess I will tear into the swingarm bearings next, and maybe one o' them there fancy fork braces. Gotta get rid of this wobble.

There were Harleys back in the 1800s, even though they were "established" in 1903. Watch this video from a friend of mine. This is the guy I got my trailer from. He has just about any bike you can think of. Click on the Throttle Down video. http://sgcustomcycles.com/

Since these bikes have aluminum risers, and mount differently, would you just cut a set of apes in half, and attach them in where our regular bars attach to the risers? Edit: I was thinking of 1st gens.

I lost my guardian bell

Remember, you can't buy your own. It has to be given to you by a friend. bmxndad, if you'll PM me your address, I'll send you one. Mine is attached to the plastic fairing crossmember in front of the radiator. I always use a zip tie. -

I eat a banana every morning. I think it keeps the cramps and charlie horses away. My dog ALWAYS has to have the last bite, though...lol...he can hear me peeling a banana from across the house.

She said everything is fine now, and they agreed she will keep her bike. No need to keep bashing the love of her life. He succumbed to her wishes, which was the smart thing to do...gotta keep your girl happy.

I had a Kenda on the back of my Suzuki, and it was a great tire. I tried it, because the Dunlop 404s just weren't lasting like they used to. My son has the Suzuki now, and the tire still looks good.

I remember my Dad used to ride me on his bike when I was very young. I had my own little helmet, and I sat in front of him. He said sometimes I fell asleep, and he would put a bungy around me to help hold me there...lol.

If the wear indicators are at the same level as the rest of the tread...it's time. You need to check the date codes, and see how old the tires are too, no matter how good they look. I just bought my bike, and the tires had lots of tread, but they were over 10 years old! Got new E3s now.

This winter, I PLAN on tearing my bike completely down to the frame. Keyword....plan. Then, I can reinforce/paint the frame, fix the 2nd gear problem, and get all of the plastic fixed and repainted.

That was my son. You know, we rode today, and I should have had him take some pics with his cell phone. I will get them as soon as possible for you. I really need to get a digital camera...bad.

I have been checking mine also, after hearing about it on here. I would like to see some more pics of the actual crack locations, so I can be sure I'm checking the right place. To my understanding, it is where the frame crosses right above the center stand. randya has some pics in the 1st gen tech library. I would hope I wouldn't have to tear the bike down that far...whew!

That is one reason I carry a full medical pack with me. I even have a C-collar.

I have a hard time keeping mine at the speed limit. I got pulled over today by a Trooper for doing 65 in a 45...I didn't even realize it until he hit his lights. Luckily, I knew him from when I was a Deputy, and we had worked MANY calls together. He let me go, and told me to slow it down...whew! I have to constantly watch the speedo to keep it at the limit...it just wants to go!
