It's not a motorcycle book, but it's the best road trip book ever written ... Blue Highways: A Journey Across America by William Least Heat Moon. Curt

Almost 100,000 miles between two RSVs, so you'd think the RSV would be the obvious answer. I've owned Kawasaki's...Spectre 750 and a Concours; I've owned one Honda...a 76 750 Supersport. A couple of different dirt/enduros, Suzuki and Kawasaki. And a couple of other Yamaha street bikes...my FZ1, my 99 RSV, and my current FJR and 06 RSV. The Spectre got me back into riding (and taught me how to rebuilt a bike), the Connie taught me how to tour and how to ride 9/10ths (sometimes 10/10s), the FZ1 was stinky fast, the FJR is a joy, and I can't come up with enough great words about the two RSVs. But my all time favorite bike? A 1972 Suzuki 550 Lemans...that bike taught me how to explore the world the year I graduated from high school! Curt

Big Mike, Here's the link to Custom Dynamics. http://www.customdynamics.com/Yamaha_tail_retro.htm I liked the tail light enough, that I bought a couple of friends who ride RSVs the tail light as a Christmas present. Curt

Is there a reason you don't want to go with the LED board? The one from Custom Dynamics works extremely well, and is BRIGHTER the regular bulb...plus it has white LEDs along the top which provide lighting for the license plate. Also, ditto on Goose's (Goose number 2...sorry, I knew the other Goose first ... but he's the head Goose here ) recommendation for superbrightsled.com. I use their bulbs on my Bushtec Roadstar trailer, and used them (until I converted to LED panels) on my Bunkhouse Camper. Curt 1st and 2d Gen Ventures meet on Channel 29

I've had a ShowChrome shorter windscreen on both our 99 and 06...in fact the 06 never got rode with the OEM windscreen. I don't know if anyone else has experienced it or not, but I did with the 99 and that was the paint rubbing off the edge of the dash where the windscreen touched it. I've seen it happen on several friend's RSV's as well. Solved the problem by cutting a stripe of soft side of Hook & Loop and putting it the entire length of the edge of the dash. Curt

No need to challenge me...just share! Most of what I do is more on the formula side, not the macro or forms side. It seems to be my history, including even when I was still on active duty in the Air Force I couldn't get programming support for various needs. A lot of what I do really could be handled by a good programmer, but I enjoy the challenge of building it and when necessary taking a programmer (who's supposed to understand logic) through logic of why it's put together the way it and why it does what it does when I do finally get programming support...typically my spreadsheets stay in place for a while to validate the programming outcomes. All my spreadsheets are built "table" style, often with some of the "tables" being fed data via a query or reporting tool (SQL prior to my PeopleSoft days, query with PeopleSoft, and now reporting with ADP), or financial systems such as Hyperion. One table might contain measurement data, another award level data, another location data, and another people data. I like to build coding systems that don't need updating once designed...only keep the financials and people data updated, and all is single entry....you put something in one spot and that's it. The real core of what I do is build formulas that can do complex mathematical calculations in a logical order...I LOVE IT!!! We've got some folks in our IT department who are great with the macros and forms tools in Excel, but when somebody needs Excel to do something special they come to me. Last year going through an ADP implementation, ADP had to come to me to build a product to test their outcomes...you got to love it! Curt

Other than motorcycling? My grandchildren!! Camping (which actually goes with the motorcycling) Collecting Hot Wheels Other collectibles (model cars...used to build them, now just collect them unbuilt; model motorcycles; some Matchbox, etc) Guitar Hero (newest hobby...starting to get good)...closest I'll have get to playing a real guitar I know it's part of my job, but I view a particular piece more like a hobby -- solving difficult problems using EXCEL...my stuff stumps programmers Curt

I sent Bill (Lumpy) a note with your e-mail address. I left you a PM here as well with his e-mail. He won't know me FJR Rider though...tell him Concours sent you Curt

You may try reaching out to Lumpy (Bill Kahley) on the Venturers site...last time I was at his house he had a spare left lower fairing in his garage. Curt

75,000 miles on a 99 RSV, and just under 20,000 on our 06 RSV...think we're hooked! I do like some of the bells and whistles on other brands (HD, Honda, Victory, BMW) better than what's offered on the RSV, but when it all comes together the RSV is still the best of the best of the bunch (and after significant test rides on the others, still the best overall ride!). Hang in there, and as somebody else said, stick to your guns! Cathy and I understand (most of) what you and your family are going through...we went through it 20 years ago. I won't say ours was any worse or better, but the perp was a relative...he won't get anywhere close to me because he's knows I'll **ll him! His family (my step grandfather) actually tried to have me arrested when I said that during an "emotional outbreak" during the trial...truth of the matter is, even 20 years later, I'm not sure I wouldn't! I guess that one is better than the helicopter from my Rescue unit hovering 200 ft up over a ranch in Placitas NM and looking at the nude female sunbather Curt MSgt USAF Retired

That's the same one, but it sure has went up in price. I got my first one for $4.95 and the second one for $5.95. Toss the white styroform piece though and replace with a cozy or some other type of liner.
-
El cheapo..it's been on both our 99 and our 06. $5.00 for the cup holder from JCW, and $2 or $3 for the liner from Wally-World (or in my case, Shopko).

RSV gets most of the time because Cathy and I ride two up most of the time. - It's the "get out of the house, let's take a ride" bike; - it's the "I had a bad day at work, let's go for a ride" bike; - it's the "let's hook up the camper and take off for the weekend" bike; - it's the "let's run down and see the grandkids this afternoon" bike; - it's the "you want to go over to your mother's in Michigan? We'll take the bike" bike; - it's the "it's vacation time, we'll be gone for a week plus camping and site-seeing" bike; - it's the "let's do the Boys & Girls Club Charity Ride this weekend" bike; - it's the "it's Friday night, time for the A&W Show & Shine" bike; - etc. But the FJR gets its time as well. - It's the "I'm going by myself for a ride" bike; - it's the "I wanna go play" bike; - it's the "back and forth to work" bike; - it's the "if you're not going, I'm riding the FJR" bike; - it's the "you're already there, I'll be there shortly" bike; - - it's the "Hey Ed, you wanna do an Iron Butt this year? You do? Great, I'm riding the FJR" bike; - it's the "Cathy is out of town this weekend. I'll ride over, down, up...to your place Friday after work" bike; - etc. Curt

LA...nice find! This is the closest thing I could find for history in Iowa though...TBone providing the light at Davis. Curt p.s. Yooper and Judy stayed at our place last night...headed off for a little CFR this afternoon and evening with some of the other Irregulars. Hope all is well your way...look forward to seeing you this year.

Don, Happy New Years. Enjoy the 550...best investment I've made on anything electronic or for the motorcycles in the last two years! Forget ever looking the RSV speedo again! Curt

Bill, You beat me to MY yearly post...thanks for hanging in there. Hey, I went back through all my 2008 VentureRider stuff, and contrary to 2006 and 2007.....I didn't PO anybody here this year Happy New Year to all the VentureRiders. Curt

We're entering our 5th season pulling a Bunkhouse SE with an RSV...first two years with our 99 RSV and last two with our 06 RSV. I think there's a picture of our 99 and the Bunkhouse some where here on the site. The RSV has no problem, or at least my two RSVs, with having enough power to pull a loaded Bunkhouse while riding two up with loaded top case and saddlebags. We've averaged 10 uses a year since we bought ours..that 10 trips a year, some 1 night, some for a week. Regarding the comment on the trailer brakes...I don't have them and don't feel I need them. I adjust my riding style when pulling the trailer, and I personally find the RSV's brakes more than adequate to stop the bike, momma and me, and the loaded trailer behind it. I won't agrue though with anyone that wants to spend the $ on adding and having the brakes...nothing like a little extra protection. But I'm fine without them. Curt

Kev, Met some great people through STAR, but my experiences with the organization and some of its rules haven't always been the best. Like I said, met some really great people in Madison with the chapter there when we lived in Waunakee, and with the Green Bay chapter when we moved up here a little over five years ago. The chapter and how it operates is what makes it or breaks it for STAR IMO, along with how well the sponsor dealer supports the local chapter. National STAR left a few things to be desired for me as well, but both the local chapters I dealt with were good at the times I was involved. My feelings regarding the charter "vote-in" process, especially for STAR member moving from chapter area to another, and STAR's rules on patches soured my opinion a little. There's a pretty active chapter there in the Eau Claire area, plus the one down in Wisconsin Rapids is pretty active...a lot of the ol' Green Bay chapter members go there now. Noticed you're in Bloomer...I live well east of you in Suamico, but over your way quite often to visit (Venture riding) friends in Eau Claire. Out of courtesy to the members here on the VentureRider site I won't mention another organization by name , but if you're interested a small group of us (we call ourselves the North Central Irregulars) get together quite a bit throughout the year. We've got a Cabin Fever Reliever coming up in two weeks in Green Lake; back over your way early February so we can head over to the bike show in Minneapolis; some of us we'll get together for the River Run in April; there will be a ride-in in LaCrosse (Goose Island) in June; maybe something for Door County in July, plus there's a "BIG" ride-in out in Spearfish SD the first full week of July that quite a few of us will be riding out for; not sure on August yet; Davis Rally in New Hampton IA first weekend after Labor Day; a few of us like go up to Tomahawk for the Fall Colors Ride the week after that...this year, I'll be back in LaCrosse that weekend for an FJR rally; and then the last weekend of September we're back in LaCrosse for OctoberFest. Or if you like camp, my wife and I are out somewhere in the state pretty much every weekend from mid-April to early October. If you're interested, personal e-mail is concours9@sbcglobal.net. Curt
