I was able to install the arm rests I got from Snaggletooth (Thanks Mike, I'll buy ya a cup of coffee sometime). I used a U-Bolt around the passenger grab bars through the upper portion of the bracket. I needed to cut down the length of the U-bolts. After I installed them, I covered the nylon locking nut with an acorn nut to avoid potential damage to the seat. The lower part of the bracket needed to be attached to an "extender". I used a piece of plumber's tape (left over from garage door opener install) and bolted it to the arm rest bracket. I them exchanged the seat mounting bolt with a longer one. The saddle bags are very tight to put on. I will try the ideas from my earlier post today when I get home from work on Wednesday. Doreen and I took a short ride around town and does she love them!!! We can not wait to get on the highway. As per Rule #1, here are some photos. Dave

I am hoping to tap into the brain trust here once again. I have been working on mounting the passenger arm rests I got from Snaggletooth. I have got that part figured out (photos to be posted later), but, when I tried to put the saddle bags back on, the "posts" were a tiny bit short. I am at work right now and was wondering if there is any adjustments to the length of the mounting posts that go into the slot? Thanks in advance. Dave

OUTSTANDING!!! One looked like a KC 135 tanker. WOW I got to see a Cobra flyby at Camp LeJune, NC once. It was on a Live Fire Exercise. What a rush. I wish I could have been on the aircraft instead of my howitzer. Dave

Good luck with the gall bladder. Laproscopic surgury isn't too bad for recovery time. Do as the doctors tell you and things will get better. Dave

Black Owl, I am not a Viet Nam Vet, served just afterwards. Active duty 1977-79 USMC, SD Army National Guard 1980-93! I still have a few around yet. I do have one in the tool kit on the bike. A very handy thing to have around. Semper Fi! Dave

I did not see the other thread referred to by ic23b, did it get deleted? I am also a disabled vet. Both my knee and my back are service conected. I had a 1984 Honda 650 Nighthawk and could not ride for very long. After getting the Venture last year, I can ride much mor comfortably. Both my back and knee don't bother me while riding. Both do in a car or pick up. I am still waiting for a bit warmer weather and then watch out! Doreen & I will be putting a bunch of miles the '84. Dave

Does anybody else check this out? I have been checking their reviews of modular helmets and have gotten some good ideas. I also notice that this site is reviewed as follows: VentureRiders: VentureRiders is a very active site and by far the largest site in the world that is dedicated primarily to the Yamaha Venture, Royal Star Venture and Royal Star motorcycles. They also have a number of members that ride other brands as well, so check it out! It seems we get around quite well! Dave

WHEN?!?!?!?!?!?

It is 8:09 AM Central time and I just saw we hit 9000 members!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :cool10: I want to thank Freebird for all his work keeping this site up and running. I also want to thank all the members without whose help I would be unable to work on my '84. Dave

I am in a lucky situation. I have all the knowledge here to draw on. I have picked up so many tips to work on my bike. I also have a dealer that is very good to work with. Interlakes Sports Center, Madison, SD. It helps that the owner used to have a 1985 Venture. His face lit up when I first took it to them last year for new tires. Doug, co-owner, even located a NOS VentureLine trunk rack and contacted me when he found it in his back room. The service guys are good. The Service manager is real helpful. What I can not do myself, they are ready, willing, and able to help me out. Dave

Got the old girl apart today
bendtdj replied to GigaWhiskey's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Wow, that looks like a bunch of work! I should strip mine that far to clean it really well. Still too cold in South Dakota. Especially with no heat in the garage. Oh well, soon. Thanks for the photo, GigaWhiskey. I can look at yours and get some ideas for mounting the arm rests I got from Snaggletooth. Good luck and ride safe. Dave -
My first bike was a Honda CB350T, i think it was a 1974. I bought to commute 80 miles round trip to colege in 1987. It had an after market Windjammer fairing on it and rode solo quite well. 2 up around town fine, but not on hte highway. I moved up to a 1984 Honda 650 Nighthawk in 2008. Nice bike, but again, not really comfortable for 2 up highway use. Last year got my '84 Venture! Decided to go for the Craig's List ad after doing some research and finding this site. I really liked the looks of the Venture and after learing so much on this site, I bought it and have not regretted it one bit. Doreen really went for it as well as soon as she sat on the back seat. I know with the help of the brain trust here, I can keep this old girl running great for years to come. Dave

Thanks for the suggestions. Dan is about 5" 10" or so and weighs around 150 lbs. I think his inseam is about 34 to 36 inches if tis help as to size. Would it be easier for him to learn on a 200 or so cc bike? The only motorized two wheeler he has ridden is a 49cc scooter. He handled that quite well. He had been driving that to school before he got a car. Yes, in South Dakota kids can drive at 14 with a learners permit and a restricted license at 15. The restricted license is only good to 10:00 P.M. unless with a licensed driver at least 18. Dad's Law is of course more strict! Only parents or big brother (22). Thanks for the help Dave

Greetings all, My soon to be 16 year old son has gottin bit by the bike bug. He wants to save for a dual purpose bike. Didn't we call them enduros back when? Any way, I thought I would seek the advice of the brain trust here and ask what is a good model for a starter bike? I like his thinking that he could learn in the pasture before hitting the streets. Thanks Dave

Mike, I got the arm rests in the mail 10 minutes ago. Just when you thing you got the Post Office figured out, they surprise you! Nest Day Service!!!!!!! Can not wait for weather to warm up a bit, no heat in my garage. Dave

Howdy all. Snaggletooth (Mike) offered to sell me his arm rest and I agreed. They will be to me soon. :dancefool: Once I get them and devise a mounting system, I will post photos of the process. Doreen is excited to get these. She has said her arms sometimes tingle on the rides we have taken. THANKS MIKE!!!!! Dave
