whats the best engine oil to use

Where's the popcorn???? :stirthepot: -
I change mine every time I change the engine oil. Heck, a bottle of the Wally World pure synthetic gear oil will last at least 4 changes. I also put a butter bean size dollop of Honda Moly in it, each change.
-
Just a thought! If you haven't already drained the oil, look up your local Caterpillar dealer and purchase and oil sample bottle. Probably less than $20.00. Warm up the engine as you would for any oil change. Drain the oil as normal, but catch a sample bottle full as the oil drains. Don't burn your fingers:shock3: and be careful not to knock any dirt off the crankcase into the bottle! When the sample is analyzed, they can tell just how much silicon (dirt) is in there. I had a similar situation where I found a leak on the clean side of the filters and had a dirt track down the intake piping. Sample showed "some" dirt, but not enough to be bothered with. The Cat folks will not have the specs to know what the other wear metals should be, but the "dirt" is the main concern. If there is high dirt, you may want to make several "short" oil and filter changes and resample, to see if you have flushed out all the contamination.

1st off you should run the passing lights off a relay connected directly to the battery. If you want the the lights on only on low beam then run the control circuit for the relay off the low beam wire. My personal preference is to have the passing lights on ALL the time. So to have a second point of failure, I have the relay control hooked to the power connector (cigarette lighter style plug) on the left lower side of the inner fairing, of the RSV. Not sure if the RSTD has such a connector. Having the relay control hooked there means that the passing lights will remain on if, for whatever reason the headlight fuse blows. As for fuse size, I have a 14ga wire, with a 20amp fuse, run under the tank to the power connector (#30) on the relay.

Friend (100 miles away) who has a V-Star (1100 I think) and has been running premium exclusively. He mostly rides it to commute (5 miles, maybe one way) back and forth to work. Talked to him tonight and he is complaining that he is having to jump it off and it runs like crap! The AutoZone battery is only a year old and he has not been using the tender that he has. I told him that with his short trips the bike cannot recharge completely, so he is gonna start using the tender. I wonder if the low battery could be contributing to the rough running? My main question for you V-Star riders, is what grade gas do you use? My friend tells me that the owners manual says "86 octane or higher". I would guess that 87 would work, but then again I don't have a V-Star.

Coming back from Vogel, I was riding in the left lane passing an 18 wheeler when a moron on a crotch rocket split my lane between us and the 18 wheeler at probably 95+mph and then still in the left lane pass kbran on his right, just as Kenny was moving to the right lane. Had he and Kenny collided it would have taken ALL of us down, in front of the 18 wheeler. Yes, given the opportunity, I would love to have a "wall to wall" talk with that MORON!!!!

Let me be the first to say that before you make any changes in "bulbs" is that you make sure the passing lights are powered by a separate relay, NOT from one of the headlight wires!

+1 on the Burgman!!! That is what got me back on 2 wheels after a 20 or so year break. After riding it for about 3 years I moved up to a 1998 Royal Star Tour Classic. When I did I thought it was a MONSTER and wondered what I had done. I'm 5'6" and have a 27" inseam. Well I finally got used to the monster, but thought I really want a Venture for all the "bells and whistles". So I found my RSV in Kentucky and went to get it without ever even having sat on one. When I bought it I was under the mistaken impression that the RSTC and the RSV were the same seat height. Well I found out real quickly that I was wrong!!! The RSV is much taller. That being said leads me to say that, in my opinion, the RSV is definitely NOT a beginner bike! Also depending on your size, it may not be for you. I've had mine for two years and 17,000 miles now and last week at Vogel it reminded me twice just who is boss. As mentioned in a previous post once one of these top heavy beasts leans over so far, unless you wear blue tights with a red "S" on the chest, the bike is going down. Just get out from under it!!! What ever your choice is, Take it slow and PRACTICE-PRACTICE-PRACTICE!!!
