An easier check is to pull the Speedometer pickup (after removing the left saddle bag) out and count the teeth on the pinion. Stock=10 teeth, V-Max=9.
Yeah, ya still gotta get the rear wheel off the ground to do this...
Not wanting to start anything, just what I use, "just because"
Purolator PureONE PL14610 or PL14612
The PL14610 is a little longer, so it is a tight fit.
When I bought my RSV it had just 16,000.0 miles and the RSTC had about 27,000.0 when I bought it. First oil change for both I changed to synthetic. No ill effects to either that I can tell. The RSV now has 48,600.0. I change it every 6-7000 miles.
:sign yeah that::sign yeah that:
Two points of failure are better than one!
I don't know about you, but having ALL the lights go out at 60mph on a dark two lane road would not be my idea of fun... :shock3:
:sign yeah that::sign yeah that: I haven't installed the eye-bolts, nor have I installed a cooler rack. I also would add, when you repack the bearings, pay close attention to the preload!
I love mine. I'm told it pulls with no problems at 100+ mph. The original "cheap Chinese" bearings looked perfect when I changed them out at somewhere around 11,000 miles. I replaced the original 2-ply tires a few thousand miles later. They still have tread left and I am using them as spares. I run 20-25 psi in the tires, depending on the load.
I loved the Continental on the rear of my RSV! Good traction starting off, held good in the rain and stuck like an anchor on hard rear braking! The bad news, it was bald in about 6000 miles.
The rev limiter on my '99 RSV kicks in at about 46(indicated) in 1st, 66 in 2nd and 96 in 3rd. I have yet to find it in 4th or 5th.
With the VMAX rear gears installed, you can subtract 4-5mph from those speeds.
My '98 RSTC rev limits at just about the same speeds as the stock geared RSV. It just doesn't get there quite as quick.
Thanks for all the prayers, as they have been answered! After a long hospital stay and numerous surgeries John is on the mend. He still has a long way to go, but has his "new" leg and is learning to use it. But in the mean time he is back to doing chores around his parent's house...
Just thinking outside the box here, but I don't believe a failing ignition switch will delete the radio pre-sets. This sounds more like you are losing battery voltage(same thing as when you disconnect the battery) somewhere.
Check all the battery cable connections.
Unless you just like to "tinker" look for the HF Tag Along. Sometimes they have it on sale. It is complete and ready for the road. I have around 15,000 miles on mine and so far never a minute's trouble. The original tires lasted about 11,000 miles. I changed the original bearings when I changed tires, just because others have said the Chinese bearings were junk. From what I saw even at 11,000 miles they looked brand new. On original assembly I did pack them with a good moly grease though. I also have added several LED lights, 'cause I like to be seen!!!
As some others have said, I'm glad it is something that can be "worked out" and not a serious health/vision problem! Y'all have been in my prayers since the announced cancellation.
:bighug:
Just my
Having made that ride several times, IMHO on a tank to tank, balls to the wall ride, I'd follow I20 to Greenwood LA then south on US 79 to US 59 (75MPH speed limit) to Cleveland, TX then take 105 west to Conroe. Some of the TX folks can suggest the best route from there.
This way you miss both Baton Rouge (and the bridge wrecks) and downtown Houston...
The 404 on the '98 RSTC has served me well since 2009 but needs replacing. The E3 on the front of the RSV has half the tread left. So I put the RSV wheel and tire on the RSTC, cause it is mostly used as my in town bike. Then I put the new E3 on the RSV.:cool10:
