Congrats Mechanic. You will love the trip out west. The Warden and I just got back from out there and loved every minute of it. If there is one thing I would suggest for you to do is to go to both the South Rim AND the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. They are both beautiful, but the view from the North Rim is much more Majestic. You can't do both in one day due to the distance, but it is well worth the time. And you can stop in Marble Canyon on the way to the North Rim. That in itself is worth the trip. On the way from the South to the North rim, we spent the night in Page Az. It is a beautiful little town on Lake Powell, right by Glen Canyon dam If I tried to tell you all the sights to see, you wouldn't have time to explore for yourself. Just be prepared to live in awe the whole time you are out there.

If you get up to the U.P. the National Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point is a must see. They have the bell from the Edmund Fitzgerald on display there. I made it in spring 05 and it was well worth the trip.

I think royalstarjac said it best. The "Harley" crowd seem to be more into riding to a meet or tavern, then sittting around bragging about how bad thier bike is. Just a few minutes ago I spoke to a man that has a Heritage Softail Springer. He says that he can only stand about 150 miles a day on it. He wants a Ulta so he and the wife can make some 400 mile days. When I mentioned that the wife and I just did 4500 in 10 days, he said "there is no way that I would ever ride that far". So I am perfectly happy touring the country riding on my "Harley wannabe" and being a "biker wannabe".

a1bummer. Just a thought here, but would a small trailer work for you or do you want to add to the stability of the bike as well? Inquiring minds must know.

Brake pad advice.
Steve S replied to donaldj2242's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Donald. I noticed the same thing as you. My first two sets of rear pads went real quick so when I replaced the front pads, I switched to EBC-HH pads. I am getting better braking power plus a lot more wear out of them. However, my next set for the rear will not be HH. They have too much bite. That was the cause of my accident in November 07. I was scuffing off some speed with my rear brake when I hit a bump and locked the rear wheel up. Now the only time I use the rears are to hold the driveshaft tight while I keep the RPMs up in a tight curve. The rest of the time it's front wheel or engine braking. Hope this answers your questions. -
Correction Squidley, you HAD one. I "stole" it and have been using it quite frequently here lately. And you are right of course. It is a great addition to the jack that I also pinched. It holds the bike steady while you lift it and even steadier after you put the legs on it and take the jack out from under it. If one is not in the budget at this time, do as I did and catch someone not home and "borrow" thiers. LOL:dancefool: Seriously, if you do not have a jack or lift adapter, the boards will work OK. Just be cautious because they are not quite as steady. Good Luck

Roadwarrior. The headlight bulb for the Venture is an automotive style H-4 bulb that can be picked up at most any auto parts store or Wal Mart. I bought my last one at an Auto Zone store when mine went out on a trip. I looked over all of the choices and picked the highest wattage that was offered at the store. However, my next one will be one of the Blue Spot bulbs( I think that is what they are called). I believe those give just a little more illumination. I haven't purchased any yet, but I sure like the look of the Genisis LEDs that is offered by Custom Dynamics, www.customdynamics.com. I am going to try them with electronic flashers to reduce the amp draw though. The auto cancel isn't a big deal with me. I have ridden so many bikes that didn't have it, that I usually tap the turn signal switch every time I turn anyway. Good luck with your picks.

Unlike bulbs that produce a white light and use a filter to give out color, LEDs produce the color of light that you see. You can use them either behind a clear lens or a colored lens of the same color you want to see. (amber lens with amber LED, ect.) Because the LED produce thier own color, the same color filter, or lens, will not block any of the color or make it dimmer... If you replace the turn signal bulbs with LEDs, you will need to change to electronic flashers or use load equalizers. Check the Tech section for this info. Good Luck.

Pull the air filters to make sure something hasn't gotten in the air intake and shut the air flow off. With the filters out take a VERY short ride to see if it changes anything. Just my thoughts. Good Luck:thumbsup2:

Dan , I ride with my hands off the handle bars all the time. Man, you gotta check out the steering from time to time. Ever since I started doing this, I have only had one LITTTTLLLEEEEE problem. And that just evolved into a craniotomy this last January. So you should have nothing at all to worry about...

Clay This may sound crazy, but you may have a hose that is coming apart inside and clogging the line when it has pressure on it. The way to check this is to pump the pressure up, then loosen the hose at the master cylinder. If a hose is clogged, the pressure won't come off. If the pressure does come off, please don't tell the Warden. She will just say "you were WRONG AGAIN"... Good luck with it.

Was this article rating the 08 or 09 models? I haven't seen anything on an 09 Venture being put out. But then I am usally about 3 months behind on my reading. Has anyone else seen anything???

I used a jack with an adapter plate that has 4 V shaped brackets for 3 1/2 years. I was worried every time I put the bike in the air. Last year I finally bought a jack adapter from Carbon1 so I could get it up on the stand and get the jack out of the way. This was by far the best investment I have ever made . With his adapter any jack will work under the bike and you dont have to worry about it being stable. My buddy has a Road Star and he is wanting me to build him one for his ride. I told him to call Larry(Carbon1)...

MM Venture - Will not Run - Help
Steve S replied to MMVenture's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
While you are choking it you could be pulling enough suction to get the fuel to the carbs. Do you hear the fuel pump run when you turn the switch on? If you dont, try tapping it with a screwdriver handle or plastic hammer(it's under the seat and behind the left side panel). Not hard, but just enough to give it a little jolt. Sometimes this makes the brushes make contact to turn the pump. One way to be sure you are getting fuel is to take the fuel line off at the filter, put it in a can the turn the switch on for just a min(The filter is behind the left side panel too) to see if the pump is building pressure. It can be a bugger to get out so put a new one in while it is out. -
Eddie. Sorry to hear about your crash dude. The good part is you are OK. If they total the bike you can get a new one that has EFI AND ABS. Heal fast and ride safe

Seaking. I have an o4 Midnight that the flashers have stopped working on also. I left mine on for a couple of days after I stopped to help get a Harley going:dancefool: and it just stopped. I didn't notice it for several days and I haven't checked it out yet, but I believe I blew a fuse. I dont have anything coming on when I turn the switch on. Your problem sounds like the flasher has failed. The flasher for the 4-ways is under the front cowling, if I remember correctly. If not it is under the left side panel. (If I'm wrong someone will speak up). Once you get the cowling off you will see a metal electronics box in the center of the handlebars. The flasher is to the left, facing the bike, of that box. It is a black square relay that has a white 2-prong connector on it. You can unplug it and using a jumper wire between the two wires in the connector, check to see if the lights come on, then off, when you plug in and unplug the jumper. What you are doing is mimicing the flasher by interupting the current flow. This will tell you if it is the flasher. I would bet mnoney it is since you do have lights working, but not blinking. One of the best accessories that I have bought is the Yamaha Repair manual for the Venture. While they got some things wrong, it is very valuable for problems such as this. Good Luck.

Pegsraper, I didn't mean to imply that better brake systems are not out there. Or that some people can't get better results from better brake systems. My feeling was if I can lock up the front tire, (I did that on purpose and in a controlled setting), then the stock brake system is doing it's job to suit me. While I am an agressive rider, I do not race the bike and when I am riding aggressively, most of my braking is done by the engine. So I don't over work the brakes. Like I said, the stock system, with the upgrades, works fine for me...

I use EBC HH pads on the Black Beast. Once I switched to braided stainless brake lines, I found out real quick that I could lock up the front tire. That is all the stopping power I need.

There was a thread about changing the clutch basket out in the Tech Section. It may be in the same thread with the one about changing the clutch. When I upgraded the clutch in my Black Beast it looked like it was a simple matter to get the basket off. What I really wanted to say is this. If your local man doesn't want to fix it, find a dealer nearby that will. It is not that hard to change out and it is too much money to spend when Yamaha should be paying for it. Good luck

Now that depends,,, how far away from a gas station would you like to be stranded??? Think of the reserve setting on your petcock as a safety device. This safety device will keep you from being stranded miles from a gas station. Would you disarm a safety device if you knew that there was a chance that you could be stranded in the middle of no-where, not knowing which way to go to get help??? :bang head: By the way, you aint lost if you aint out of fuel...
