Last week my riding buddy and I had taken a trip down to ride the Dragon and to catch a few roads down in NC and SC while we were down that way. We spent the night at the Two Wheel Inn in Robinsville on Thursday night planning to head out 129 East on Friday morning. Friday morning the road was still messy and it was pretty foggy after the heavy rains we had on Thursday evening so I was trying, (I thought) to take it easy as we left the Inn. About 2 miles into the trip I fell into a curve a little faster than was needed. Since the road was wet I didn't want to use too much rear brake so I grabbed some front brake and promptly killed what lean I had as I went into the curve. As I got closer to the double yellow line I saw 3 cars coming at me. I knew this wasn't gonna be a good situation, but I kept braking and leaning, all the time hoping for the best. The bike drifted over far enough to the left to hit the first of the yellow stripes. (Freshly painted and thick of course). Once it hit the painted stripe the whole front end SLID all the way into the left lane of the road. Thanks to some very attentitive drivers, I met all three cars with the bike in the left lane, and me praying while I was hanging on for dear life and leaning over the yellow stripes. All I can say is that once again God was watching over me. I was pretty shook up, plumb scared might be a better term, but we were able to finish our ride that day after I stopped and got my pusle and nerves back under control. Needless to say my riding style was not very agressive for the rest of the trip. Thanks for letting me share my little misadventure.

What mufflers are you running
Steve S replied to Deacon's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Would anyone have a set of stock RSTD mufflers for sale? I flattened the bottom of my mine when I had the lowering kit on the Black Beast. Time for a newer looking set to spruce it up. Thanks -
Freebird used to make and sell an attached centerstand, but I don't believe he does that any longer. The only type that I know of is the stand that Carbon 1 makes. It's great for for putting the bike on to do any kind of work. However you do have to jack the bike up and put the legs on it. A bit of work just to check the oil, but its great to use when washing the bike. He has them listed ion the classifieds. Good luck

Ruffy Put me down for a set. If not in the first order, then put it in the second edition. Thanks

Rule of thumb: If your pants dont stand up by themselves, THEY AINT DIRTY... We try to wear our jeans two days if they dont get wet. But I gotta change everything else every day. But we can make it with 4 changes and a pair of shorts to wear while the clothes are washing.

A red lens is actually a red "filter". When you put a white light behind it, it filters out all of the colors EXCEPT red. So if you put a red LED behind a red lens, it allows all of the color from the LED to come through. Sounds crazy I know, but what in this world isn't??? I used the LED board from Custon Dynamics and changed all of my lens to clear. I just liked the clear look better. I'm planning on going with LED turn signals soon. Good luck with whatever you go with.

I have a question about the facilities. I know some people camp at Don's, but the rumor I heard was that last year Mini-Muffin set up and open air shower for the men to use. If this is the case this year I am gonna be one smelly dude when I get back home....

Leave it to Mini to come up with a great idea...

Here are a few shots of my work in progress. My son and I started work on it last fall and with the help of my riding buddy we are almost finished with the inside. Kinda proud of the way it turned out. We still have several things that we want to do, but for the most part it's useable. What am I doing wrong ??
Steve S replied to gradona's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
The first thing to check is to make sure the Warden is not watching. :no-no-no: Then look to see if the "strawberry" blond is taking her evening walk. If she's not out you may wanna check to see if the brunette with the stroller is coming by... :innocent:- 17 replies

Bigfoot. Are you using a cassette adapter or an auxiliary cord plugged into the auxulary port right beside the cassette player? I have been using a satelite radio for 3 years and before that a Walkman CD player plugged directly into the auxiliary port of the stero system. I haven't noticed any difference in the quality of sound from the FM radio and sound through the auxiliary system. Good Luck. P.S. I picked my auxiliary cord up at Radio Shack for about 7 bucks.

Drive Shaft With Busted Teeth
Steve S replied to Jinksy4's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
OK... I am now TOTALLY confused (which is a natural state for me). If the gear on the rear of the shaft runs in hypoid oil, why is it reccomended to remove the shaft every tire change and coat it with a good coating of Moly grease that never comes off??? The hypoid oil constantly being circulated in the shaft coupling would make it a better lubricant. Adding a heavy grease in this area would deter the movement of hypoid oil to this component creating heat build-up. It seems to me that this would be self-defeating. Somebody SAVVVEEEEEEEE MEEEEEEEE...- 29 replies

Hey POPS. Here is the link to the map of the US and Canada. http://www.epgsoft.com/VisitedStatesMap/ You will need to go to the "Member's Control Panel" and make a signature, then add it to it. Good luck with it.

Drive Shaft With Busted Teeth
Steve S replied to Jinksy4's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Taz. These gears do not mesh with another gear of a different size. This shaft slides into a splined collar and it stays meshed with the same teeth. There is not any type of adjustment to make with the connection. I thought the shaft meshed with the rear diferental ring gear until I looked at a parts breakdown (see link). http://216.37.204.206/xtremepowersports/Yamaha_OEM/YamahaMC.asp?Type=13&A=320&B=27 I do agree with you though. It looks like it should have meshed a little deeper. Kinda makes me wonder what the collar looked like.- 29 replies

Drive Shaft With Busted Teeth
Steve S replied to Jinksy4's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Well, I just showed my ignorance. :bang head: I thought that gear, (NO. If I had thought, I would have known.) meshed with the ring gear. The gear is cut too straight to mesh with a ring gear. I had to go look at the parts breakdown and check it out. This being said, I am going to pull my driveshaft and check it out. I keep the gears and splines on the wheel lubed good, but have never pulled the driveshaft and greased it. With 60K miles I believe it is well past due. Time to go to the wonderful Tech Manual that this site provides for us and check out the procedeure.- 29 replies

Drive Shaft With Busted Teeth
Steve S replied to Jinksy4's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Jinksy I thought the condition of the gear was awful. The teeth looked like they had rusted, then been run and the rust flaked off. I saw a couple that were very thin in the center. You did good in changing it. And I was surprised that you found one so cheap. Was expecting a couple hundred bucks for that. What did the ring gear look like? I'm assuming it looked good since you didn't change it.- 29 replies

I have moved my plug mount several times. I use a double-sided tape to remount the plug holder. What I use is 3M "Exterior Mounting" tape that is available at Wal Mart or Lowes. It is usually found in the paint section with the other tapes. It will hold most anything, but can be removed easily enough if you need to move it. The only thing I cant get it to work on is the Warden's mouth. It just keeps on flapping and flapping and flapping... :stirthepot:

Risers & flanders?
Steve S replied to jimmydsmith7's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
If you haven't purchased your bars yet, talk with the salesman and see if you can get a set of bars that have an inch more pull back. I'm sure there are some out there that will do what you want without having to go to the trouble of adding risers. Juat a thought. -
Jrichard A "stretched" timing chain used to be a common problems on earlier automobiles that used a steel chain instead of a belt. The stretching come from both the chain wearing AND the drive gears that it runs on wearing. It wasn't uncommon for an engine with over a 100K to have the timing chain jump a cog on one of the gears, usually the camshaft gear (the cam gear was often aluminum with a nylon cover). This would cause an engine to run real rough and somtimes even bend a valve or two or even 16 :whistling:if the timing was far enough off. If you have that many milles on an engine I would say it is time for some serious maintance. Dig DEEP into that pocketbook and pay quickly before you suffer more engine damage. Re-adjusting the timing is just a stop-gap measure that will only last a short time.

I have a question about the nitrogen filled tires. Prior to putting the nitrogen in, does the installer pull a vaccum on the tire??? If he doesn't then you do not have a pure nitrogen enviroment. There will be some "air" allowed in when the tire is installed. I realize this is a small amount, but still, it would not be pure nitrogen. Wouldn't this be enough to dilute the nitrogen and cause it to seep out??? Personally I feel this is just a marketing gimmic to increase profits. If a person properly maintains their bike, you will get the same results with regular compressed air.

I have several ideas about how to stay awake but the Warden will only practice them with her... :innocent: :rotf: :rotf: The Warden has fallen asleep several times. When she does I know it is time to find a quiet, secluded spot to wake her back up.

Rear End Clicking, I Recieved Some Interesting Info!
Steve S replied to mashley's topic in Watering Hole
Yeah, what he said. The axle nut creates a straight pull. There is no way that a direct pull could cause a solid steel shaft to bend due to being overtightened. :no-no-no: At least not under the torque range you are talking about.
