jfoster replied to 920shrek1's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I have bout 9k miles on mine so far and they're doing good, look to be about half worn....alot better than the original bridgestone. I live in the south, but I don't do alot of riding during the heat of the day. -
Auestion for the Truck Drivers Out There (about passing)
jfoster replied to LilBeaver's topic in Watering Hole
I drove for 12 years...For me it didn't really matter. If they came by kinda slow I got to take a look at their ride. I thought it kinda foolish to ride real close to the trailer tandems (recaps). What I do when riding and I do pass a semi, I try to stay close to the center line in the tire grove where I will be most visible in his mirrors, then as come along side I move over towards the fog line in case a tire does blow. Depending on his mirrors, your in a blind spot about his rear tractor tandems if your close to the fog line. On the flip side, I think its disrespectful to have a semi pass a motorcycle then to come right back in front of him showering him with road debri (traffic willing) on a four lane. -
Me personally, if its a quite one and doesn't make alot of the chirp and whine then I would definitely keep it and repaint it. The next one may not be as quite. Seems like those are the real keepers regardless of color. If its a noisy one then I would take my chances with another one. As far as painting it and it hurting the value..who's to say. The next guy may really like the color.

I sat on one the other day, 06 trade in. Very clean etc. But, what I noticed is there is a short distance from the seat to the foot pegs. I'm 6'1 and could see my knees getting sore after awhile.

I've got one on my 06 and it doesn't bother my wife at all. She's never complained bout having enough room, she's 5'7 and 135 lbs.

Aero-Dynamics question
jfoster replied to jfoster's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
To give a better visual..I mounted the long end parallel with the road just under the tank emblem and butted them up to my knees. I did another test ride today with a calm breeze. At 100 mph no movement and at 85 mph I could ride relatively comfortable, I have never been able to do that. Other factors, 16" clearview windshield, 3/4 helmet with face shield. For me having the short shield versus the a tall shield, its a working solution and makes interstate riding alot more comfortable. Maybe one day someone will put something into production that is more visually appealing. Till then, I'll have the wife sew the magnets in and close up the ends and scotchguard em. -
Aero-Dynamics question

I would, but I can't figure out how to do it. If someone can put me on the link, I'll try again. -
My 06 RSTD is the same...3 qts puts it bout half way.

Aero-Dynamics question

Your magnetic advice turned out to be a perfect idea...just for R.A.D. I got a pair of black seat belt pads (the ones that you put on your shoulder belt) from wal-mart and placed magnets inside them and attached them to the side of the tank on the bottom side of the tank emblem. Their about 10" x 3" and at 75 mph they never moved and did a pretty good job of deflecting the air out. I still get plenty of air to stay cool, but I don't have air hitting my chest increasing the buffeting affect. I may scotchguard it and let it ride. The material is soft as a cotton cloth and doesn't seem to have any negative effects on the paint. Total cost $15. -

49/51 primary factor is the at fault vehicle...49 % secondary factor in La. -

According to the press release...If I understand it right. Four MC's were already in the opposing lane and performing the pass when the pick-up activated his turn signal and the 5th MC was also in the opposing lane and committed to pass the pick-up then he (MC) had control of that lane and if it was in a legal passing zone then the pick-up was at fault for not yielding. La. Law Just because he activated his turn signal as the MC was passing doesn't give him the right to turn into him. It should have been a CLUE to the pick-up if five bikes had just passed him to use his mirrors before performing the turn. Then again maybe mirrors are optional in that state, kinda like turn signals are an option in the south. -
Aero-Dynamics question
jfoster replied to jfoster's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
They are...I "think" one of the problems is with the lower fairing, air goes under the lowers then hits the fairing and then has to travel up or down it instead flowing around the lower half of the bike. I may experiment with something on that end, I've tried extending the lowers with no difference. -
On my 06 RSTD, I've noticed I get alot of air coming up around the fuel tank at 70 mph. If I hold my hands beside the tank directly in front of my knees its gone or deflected away, eliminating air hitting my arms and chest. I'd like to have someone make something that would mount to the side of the tank w/adhesives (like the emblem) bout 2-3" wide and bout 1-2" tall kinda like a wing that would mold from my knees around to the front of the tank. I've thought about looking into having someone machine something out of aluminum but I'm scared of how much it would cost in excess of $500. Bike is stock, with 16" clearview with the wider lowers. Any thoughts on if that idea is possible or alternative ideas ....tks PS I've thought bout sending my tank emblems to someone like OCC and have them machine something with the same diameters but extended it out 2-3". I use Rotella 15-40. To me 10-40 is to thin for the transmission and 20-50 is to thick for a water cooled engine (my fuel mileage went down and drained it out). Like most RSTD owners, I've never heard or even felt the engine fan come on. I read an article years ago, which stated that diesel engine oil was supposedly very good for a motorcycle engine. I'm leary of the light weight synthetic Rotella due to the transmission gears breaking it down.

I've always heard that the polaris atv's did not have the quality or durability as the hondas and yamahas. I would suspect, their motorcycles are probably in the same category. I've also heard that they have alot vibration at hwy speeds.
-
Just looked at the honda powersport website and they already have the 2010 out. Looking at the specs, it looks the same to me as the 09.
-
Dumb question..do you guys shift gears at about the same speeds? According to the owners manual, the recommended shift points are very low, but on here I've read that its better to shift at alot higher speeds. FYI my 06 RSTD at best was maybe 40 mpg on the interstate at (true) 70 mph. Most of time it avgs 35 to 38 mpg. Something else to consider for those that haven't recaliberated their speedometer is the odometers show alot more miles than they actually run, giving a false reading of more mpg's.

RSTD, 65 mph short shield (buffeting starts at 70), 70-75 with clearview tall shield.

re: lower shields

I think it was Kansas29 (my apologies if I'm wrong) that put a set on his after he installed his fairing. I tried to go back and find the post and couldn't find it. -
I left my phone number with them and with in bout 3 hrs they called me back and was very professional. As it approached the six wk mark we were planning a long ride and I wasn't sure if it would get shipped in time. They were able and willing to push it ahead a day to get it to me before the weekend and save me on overnite shipping.
