Missing 4th and 5th Gear
uthpda replied to uthpda's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
That is encouraging, I need to change the oil anyway so draining it is not a big deal. I didn't think about the gasket. I will try to be careful with it. (Local stealer is close on Mon. Even if they have it in stock) I would like to get away as cheap as possible as money is tight right now so not buying parts sounds good. -
Missing 4th and 5th Gear

I was afraid that was whatthe answer was I was hoping not to have to open things up, but it looks like I have something to do on Monday now:whistling: I may be back looking for more help, I am not too great at the mechanic thing. So any words of advice that anyone has, I am listening! -
OK...I have read some other threads, but I am hoping for an easier fix than some that I have found. (I am lazy and want to ride not wrench:)) I laid my bike down today, I was going up a driveway with huge ruts (ditches really) and my front tire slide into one and I slowly laid the bike down. (in my defense it was really steep and the ruts were like ditches). After recovering from my embarrassment (well mostly) I had a crack faring piece (which is no problem to fix...been there done that). I start home sad but knowing I could fix what I broke..UNTIL I tried to shift into 4th gear. I can shift from first to third (and into neutral) with no problems at all, but trying to go into 4th doesn't happen...it is like trying shift up again if you are in 5th (don't ask me who I know that) It was a fairly gentle lay down the damage to the fairing is more due to the weight of the bike and than the impact. So any idea on what the problem might be? And what I am looking at to fix it? I haven't opened anything up yet... won't have time till Monday, so I am looking for ideas for easy and quick fixes.

I had imc for a couple years and it has been ok. I replaced it with a new unit this year, the pins kept getting bent so I change to the new plug system...so far so good. For the price it is hard to beat.

OK, I have a suggestion.... the list of people is long and I am trying to send the video on to the next person, but some on the list seem to be missing and others don't receive private messages, which means that there is no good way to contact with them...can someone (like a moderate type person) check to make sure that the people on the list are still on VR and if they still want it. I am just waiting to hear from the last person I've tried contact...but it might make the video move easier. Just a thought, this is a fairly old thread.

Got it, viewed it, liked it! I didn't get any 'brand new' information, but the re-emphasis on head and eyes was very good for me! Sometimes it is easy to let the little things slide and forget to continue to work on my skills, which means developing bad habits! So with three DVDs on the list...who is next? (that answer may need to come from KiteSquid....not just everyone volunteering!)

I too use the front kneeling and the tire isn't a problem to remove with the lightbar. -
I would be "untested" but I have to be in Indianapolis for work that day..actually coming beck home...trying to work it out to ride the bike so I can get some riding in.

84 Starting Problem
uthpda replied to uthpda's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
OK...after alot of messing around. Here is where I am at.... I messed with and rewired the kill switch, it had a spot that i was suspicious that there might be a break in and that might cause the intermittent problem. Somewhere in this whole process I noticed that the ignition fuse was indeed blown (don't think that is what the problem was because it did start sometimes) ANYWAYS I put it all back together (even sync up the cards and did a couple of little things including cleaning up some contacts) and it seems to running and starting good:big-grin-emoticon: I hope it is fixed, only time will tell...but so far so good!!! -
84 Starting Problem

Well....strike one I wired the switch out of the equation, and still have the same problem. Any thoughts on what is next? The pain is that it isn't a consistent problem...but it is getting worse. I hate electrical problems. -
84 Starting Problem
uthpda replied to uthpda's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
ok.... Here is where i am at.... checked the battery and grounds...all good check the kill switch, starter and ignition fuse...everything seems fine. There is not a lot of corrosion, cleaned things up. The kill switch had some resistance... it actually seemed like it would fluctuate. I tried to start it and no go...i noticed that when it doesn't start the fuel pump doesn't switch on. So I jumped the kill switch and it started right up. After that it starts fine now, but I am not very confident that it will stay that way. It looks like it is the switch... Does that sound like the problem to you all?? Any cheap solutions for a bad switch? -
84 Starting Problem

Sorry forgot to add..... that lights, radio, etc all work fine when this happened, and battery is charged and good to go. Only odd thing is that when I switched the kill switch off and on, I noticed the tach would jump a tiny bit. Squid, I will check what you recommend tomorrow! -
I need some help in tracking down a problem! In the past couple of days, I have had my 84 not willing to start. She seems to run OK but twice now when I go to start her, she won't turn over. It acts like the kill switch is off, but it isn't. The first time it happened I played with things (turning the kill switch off and on, kick stand up and down, turned the key off and on, etc) and she eventually fired up. The second time... same stuff, but no help....sooo being on a hill I jump started her, no problem at all. After both times, she started up later and runs ok. SO I am off tommorrow and have some time, where should I start looking? and how should I test (I have a low wrench IQ) Dave

well, he tried a stripper designed for plastic (he knew not to use the regular stripper...he said don't ask how) .....but it didn't do a very good job. So it was sandpaper that won the day. I was just hoping to find something that saved him time and effort, since he is doing me a favor. The parts are now ready to prime and paint tomorrow morning!! He thinks I will have them back on Sat. Thank for the help! Dave

The paint is peeling and cracked, which is why it is being repainted. Unfortunately the last paint job was not done well (long, painful story), SO he (different paint guy) is trying to fix it.

I need some advice...I have a guy painting my bike (actually repainting the trunk and saddlebag) and he is trying to strip them down, but the paint won't come off. He paints cars (and does good work) but hasn't dealt with plastic much...how can he strip the clear and paint off (quickly and easily) so he can start shooting paint? He has tries a few different strippers, but they aren't taking the paint off. Looking for some help to move this project along and help him not to send days trying to get the old paint off. Dave

back to the sticky seat
uthpda replied to PBJ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
My 84 had the same problem...not sure why. I couldn't spring for a new cover or seat...so I just started messing with stuff. I sprayed brake cleaner on it...don't know why, but it worked. Got rid of the sticky and so far it hasn't return and the seat looks ok (didn't change ti to some strange color or anything) I would try that if you are planning to replace it...couldn't hurt. -
