  1. my RSTD gave the same problem, and I have a backrest as well. I have purchased a HD Road Glide and can tell you the difference in the bar styles. My RSTD is more of a beach bar style, low and wide with your wrists cocked at a bit of a funny angle. My HD has a higher set of bars (almost a mini ape), higher and more pullback (closer to me), but more importantly my wrists arent cocked at the angle like the RSTD. HD hands down more comfy. I used to think those apehangers were for looks. Not anymore, higher and more pullback will do the trick.
  2. Just did some fancy baked taters tonight, and have done a few sets of ribs on it. Works good, just need some more time to use it!
  3. You know how projects that start out simple turn into something else? Well I seem to always make that happen. I decided this winter I would make a smoker out of 2 air compressor tanks. I had a Harbor Freight trailer already so I thought why not make it mobile. So every now and then I would work on it and do a little more each time. I pretty much had it all done, and I decided it would get kind of hot out in the sun, so I better have some shade. So today I made a quick mount for an umbrella. Then while I was doing some baked potatoes on the grill I figured I better make a quick table for my soda (no beer for me). So I am pretty much done with the mods, until the next time I use it and think of something else. Heres a few random pics. I think it turned out pretty good.
  4. I was coming out of Aberdeen SD today at about 1:30 p.m. and I met a black Venture pulling a trailer headed west on U.S. Hwy 12. There isnt many ventures around here, and I thought I knew most all of them. Just wondering if it was anybody from this site. The trailer was a car top box mounted to trailer, and it looked pretty nice. I gave a good wave from my pickup truck but I doubt they saw me (split lane road).
  5. I rode the bike home (20 miles) to make sure it was ok. I figured if something would happen because of the bike, I wanted it to happen to me because of the amount of experience. I think the bike will be good for him. It doesnt seem to be a terribly quick bike which is a good thing. The Vance and Hines Short Shots are loud, but that might not be so bad. At 55 mph it sounds like the bike is really revving so you dont want to push it much more. I know it can run alot more but maybe the high rev sound will slow him down some.........Ok a guy can always hope!
  6. Here is a few pics of my son and his 1st bike. 05 V-Star 650 Classic. Let the good times begin!
  7. A little twist to my plan. I just found my sons bike. Since I havent heard from the neighbor, I started snooping through the paper and came across an 2005 V-Star 650 Classic. It has an aftermarket windshield, and is set up for either solo or rear pillion for the seat. It has Vance and Hines short shots on it for exhaust, which is louder than I'd like. But my 17 year old loves them. It has 6400 miles on it, and the origional Bridgestone rear on it. I can squeeze a few more miles out of it though. I can get it bought under 3000, so I just called the owner back and took it. Mid sized bikes around here at this time of year are hard to come by. The last 3 I looked at are 1000 over high book. Hope to have a few pics sometime soon.
  8. I've got an old Honda Passport 70cc scooter sitting outside right now. Some how I dont think that will work...........
  9. It is a 1996 Magna. I would assume it is the same as the V45. 750cc bike. I think they quit the V65 awhile ago. Those were 1100cc's and did have some problems if I remember correctly. Faster than fast too.
  10. This one will. Owner told me it will, He's about 25 years old and would test it out. He now has a crotch rocket to satisfy his speed needs.
  11. I've come across a '96 Honda Magna, that a neighbor owns. He is thinking of selling and it is in really good shape. I would spend a little extra to get it since I know it has been well cared for, but he is still on the fence about keeping it. Anyway, my son is looking for his 1st bike, and I am a little nervous about this one. I know that these bikes are fast and quick, everything else about it I like. Especially the V-4 motor. I know for a fact that these bikes can get up close to 130 mph or more, and this worries me with a 17 year old. Aside from the speed, if anybody knows of any other issues let me know.
  12. I hope not. I would like a little more seat time before I turn them loose in that mess!
  13. My boys (ages 20 and 17) just took the Motorcycle Safety Course this weekend. So now that they passed, it will be time to look for bikes. My oldest wants my RSTD thats been sitting in the garage. I think he would be able to handle it, hes a big kid (6' 3" and 190 pounds) and really level headed. But still it would make me nervous. My other son isnt as big, only about 5' 9" and 130 pounds. So I am going to have to find something to fit him. Maybe in the 500 to 650 range. Let the fun begin in the hunt for the right bike! I'm really looking forward to some rides with my boys!!!!
  14. Congrats Peg! Only another 30 years or so on the farm and I can retire......Hopefully sooner but not holding my breath. I got lucky and got to come back to the farm and its been great, so I dont mind being there for a long time to come.
  15. If I have crop circles in my field, it is because my sister tethered her horse to a picket, and the damned thing ate all my crops.......
  16. Nope, proper planting time is right now. I took the balloon into the local weather station today. The lady at the front desk simply said thanks, then as an afterthought she asked where I picked it up at. That was it, so my exciting weather balloon story has come to a noneventfull close.
  17. Welcome.....Most people here are really good at picking our noses, not brains!
  18. I think the balloon could be rather large, judging by the amount or rubber knotted around the nylon cord. The transmitter is about the size of a hershey bar, only it is about an 1 1/2 inch thick. It doesnt weigh that much. This is a pic of what I found.
  19. It wouldnt be much of a pic. Just imagine a styrofoam box (with transmitter) tethered to a nylon cord, with a rubber balloon knotted all around the cord. On top of that an orange parachute about the size of a kitchen garbage bag. In other words a tangled up mess.....
  20. I was out in the field planting soybeans yesterday. I came across what looked like a garbage sack in the field. I stopped and got out to pick it up and it wasnt a garbage sack. it was a weather balloon, complete with the parachute and transmitter on it. Good thing I didnt try to plant through it. There was at least 10 feet of cord or more running from the balloon to the transmitter. I would of had a big mess running that through my planter. The box with the transmitter is all trashed, so I cant return the transmitter in it. It says on the box that it was released on 1/11 of this year from Bismarck ND. So I guess I will take it to the local weather bureau and let them handle the shipping etc. But it was kind of neat. By the way Bismarck is about 220 miles away.
  21. Brian and I tried to meet at the Full Throttle last year during the Ted Nugent concert. Kind of a spur of the moment deal. THAT DOESNT WORK.......but it was fun trying!
  22. What the heck! I stay at the iron horse as well. We will have to meet up at the beer garden before you ride Da Bus! I forgot to add that I am just 5 1/2 hours away and am a South Dakotan. No real plans while out there. The Iron Horse has alot of people from the north eastern part of the state staying there. For those that are going and havent been there before, the Iron Horse is a good place to stay. Fairly quiet, and clean bathrooms and showers. Only drawback is not alot of shade. Hope to see more from the venture riders there this year!
  23. There are starting to be more and more of us who made the switch. Another year or so and we will need a "Venture Davidson" section on here. OK maybe not........Looks Nice man.
  24. Our head of purchasing would get whatever he could get cheapest I think. I dont think he paid much attention to alloys. One time I had to put a 12 degree bend lengthwise down one side of a piece of 4 x 5 x 3/8 alum angle in 6061 that was about 3 feet long. So I heated the side that needed to be bent, and like a idiot I held on to the alum and stood right in front of it. All I heard was a big bang when I went to bend it. Suddenly I wasnt holding on to it, and I heard it hit the floor about 4 feet behind me. It broke the angle right in half, and threw the part I was holding on to over my head and into the aisle behind me. It happened so fast I never even saw it. Lucky I didnt get killed.
  25. I used to work with alum. fairly regularly. It all depends on the number of alloy you are using. 6061 is aircraft aluminum. I used to work for a company that makes fans. When I'd roll the alum. for the housings its tensile strength would almost double every pass through the roll. 6061 is really hard to form. We would use a rosebud on a cutting torch and heat it really hot before trying to bend in a press brake. I cracked as much as I formed seems like. 5052 alloy is much more forgiving, easier to work with. Most barstock you get is 6061. When we would try to form straps say 1" wide by 1/8" thick we would shear strips of 5052 rather than try and form barstock in 6061 alloy. You would get the straps to about 80 degrees and just about have it then the stuff would crack, even with heat. Id agree with Jeff, the bend radius is key, Our company wanted a tight radius, like some of the steel we were bending. The aluminum wouldnt hold up to that tight of radius. One other thing, working in a fabrication plant, we were constantly using fresh steel that was pickled and oiled. Our leather gloves always had plenty of oil on them from handling that stuff all the time. When heating the aluminum to bend it, we'd test the amount of heat the alum had absorbed by quickly running our oily gloved finger over it. The smear from our glove would start to smoke before the aluminum gets too hot. That became a good tell tale sign that it was ready to bend.
