1st job employment experiences,, oh those wonderful first jobs..
bj66 replied to cowpuc's topic in Watering Hole
When I was 16 I went to work on my uncles farm. I got to run a IHC Tractor and disc. Loved it because it had air conditioning and AM-FM plus a cassette player in it. Then when it got really hot I got to empty 6 or 7 grain bins. Let's just say I got to learn the business of a scoop shovel. When I turned 18 I could legally buy beer in SD. When it came time to scoop out the bins, I would wait until the neighbor kid was done milking and he would come over and help. He was 16 at the time and would love to have a few beers and would scoop like a madman. We still get together almost every day. Anyway I figured a few beers was worth the sacrifice. I just talked to my aunt last week, and it looks like I will get to farm some of that ground next year. Last time I was on that ground was 1986. Guess things are coming full circle. Lots of memories from my uncle. Although I grew up on a farm, by the time I was old enough to work our farm, my dad had rented it out because auctioneering took too much of his time. My uncle taught me everything about farming and I guess it's fitting that I get to carry on the family tradition. -
I have the model 7 youth as well in .243. Lots of nice bucks taken by the kids in our family. They get to fill tags first. My daughter will be the 4th one to use it. Even a few neighbor kids have used it. I ordered another .243 today, was going to get a 7mm-08 and had myself talked into it. But I already shoot a 25-06 which is so close to 7-08 it didn't make sense to have another. Besides I just counted 6 boxes of .243 shells, I'm already stocked up. That gives us 3 .243's, a 7mm-08, a 30-06, and a .223. I'm covered I guess..... Forgot the 25-06 on the list

I actually thought of taking the 270wsm and changing the stock on it and adding a good recoil pad like a Limbsaver. Thought if I added a Boyds laminated stock and the pad it would only cost about 150 or so dollars. Thought I might be able to get a little more weight that way. But in the end the .270wsm is just too much bullet for my closer shots. If I miss the vitals by a tad, I'm going to have hamburger I can't eat, instead of making sausage that I can. .243 at my distance is plenty. I wouldn't worry about using a 22-250 on most of my shots. I could get away with .223 on about a third of them. Close in shots with no obstructions (trees etc) and flat ground. No elevation changes etc....I've shot at least 3 deer inside of 25 yards, and one of them was less than 60 feet. That one was sneaky and got around behind me before I saw him

I have my dad's 30-06. Early 60's model I'm guessing. Remington Gamemaster pump with Weaver 4X scope. That ones a keeper...... I hunt from a elevated blind. So I get close in natural shots. Don't have to hurry etc. I've shot at least 15 deer with .243, not one has run more than 3 Steps. Can't remember for sure when the last one even took one step. Love the .243 round. Although I let my son have my prized .243 its a Rem 7400 semi auto. Feels like your shooting a pellet gun. If I do get another .243 in a bolt, it won't be the same. Might have to move up to 7mm-08. In all honesty its gonna be hard to outdo the 25-06 I used the last 2 years......But since I'm getting rid of the Tikka, I have to replace it. You NEVER downsize your collection. You just modify and adapt....

I was in my gunsafe the other day and I took out my .270 wsm. I've had it for about 6 years and taken one whitetail with it. Like the gun, hate the caliber. Actually it's not the guns fault, its a Tikka T3 lite. Gun packs a wallup when you shoot. I always wear bib coveralls when its cold and the adjustment buckle for the bib straps happen to be between gun and shoulder. Obviously it doesn't help matters. Anyway, seldom do I shoot over 200 yards, mostly at 100 or so. So in reality the .270 short mag is too much gun for that close. So here is my question, 7mm-08 or .243? I like the .243, gave mine to my son. I am using 25-.06 right now. I already have a .223 for varmints and coyotes. I've never had any problems with .243 on deer, works great at my distances. But from what I read on the net, 7mm-08 is supposed to be better although almost the same as 25-06. I'm leaning towards going back to another .243. I haven't ruled out a .260 rem either. But ammo is tougher to get and more spendy...... When I do trade, someone's going to get a real good Tikka. I hope they don't mind recoil. That 6.5 pound gun packs a wallop.....

Kids with them fart can exhausts on their car. Although it's annoying, it takes that thumping stereo to complete the package......

When someone is drinking a bottled water, and they just can't let the water flow out of the bottle. They have to "suck it out", trying to get it out faster. They end up collapsing the bottle while trying to drink it.

I have been thinking about this as well. I'm not quite 50, and I still like to ride. My problem is that my wife doesn't. I can do all the day rides I want and they are fun. But I feel guilty about going on extended rides. She comes out to Sturgis and stays for the weekend. I stay for seven to 10 days. Also, all my friends are couples who ride together. Sometimes I feel like a 3rd wheel around them with my wife not being a part of it. Sometimes I think a nice old muscle car would be fun. The wife and I could go for a ride together whenever we want. Unfortunately my problem isn't the riding itself, its all the circumstances that accompany it......

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that I will still be the closest to Sturgis, and will be the only one who trailers out there......AGAIN!!!! After all, one year is the beginning of a streak......

Silence coming from the curb in the darkness........he was proboby just thinking about another piece of pie........

Game on for next year! Only change is we need to meet earlier. The short trip up to Spur Creek Saloon is well worth it. Maybe a 4 O'Clock meet at Spur Creek, then the quick trip back to Blue Line for supper, pie, and ice cream! Sounds like a winner to me!

Very sad to see this, and I am actually surprised there wasn't more of this type of stuff. There was so much traffic and congestion out there it was unbelievable. I was out there 9 days and rode less than normal by far. When going places we took the truck, taking lots of gravel to avoid traffic problems. Out of pocket cash was also less spent while there. Went to grocery store and bought a lot more stuff cooking at the campground. My good friend went out weds the 30th of July. He came home on Tuesday morning the 4th. He rides nonstop while out there, and he had enough. On Monday the 3rd traffic was backed up 5 miles out of Keystone (think Mnt Rushmore) and was stop and go from there. I feel bad for all the people who had accidents out there, and I feel bad for the lady that pulled out in front of Mr. Kellar. With those conditions out there I can certainly see how it could happen. I'm sure she is devastated as well. Parker SD is on the east side of the state, and I'm sure she was out on vacation too. Lots of stuff going on on unfamiliar roads for her too. At one point while riding I met bikes packed together for 45 miles straight in a 65 mph zone. If just one bike would've had trouble, I couldn't imagine the outcome....... I haven't heard final attendance total, but 700,000 or so makes for a crowded Rally. Last I heard 1.3 million were there........

Looks like I better lay off the Pie. Or maybe your camera just adds another 40 or 50 pounds.........

II wasn't meaning to offend anyone. I hope no one took offense. Just saw the slingshot and it looks like a lot of fun. Can Ams look fun too. As long as a guy gets out and enjoys himself, its all good!

Could say the same about the can am being a summertime snowmobile.......sometimes different can be fun
-
I saw a few Slingshots in Sturgis this week. If it came down to one of them or a Can Am I'd take the Slingshot. They look like a lot of fun.

Just got home this afternoon. Last I heard on Tuesday/Wednesday the official count was 1.3 million. Glad to be home where it is quiet......

We had a great time. Puc has the camera so I'm guessing it will be a few days until he gets home. There was between 10 and 15 of us. Pie was good, but that was secondary!

We rode to Hewlett Wyoming this morning. Basically coming in from south via Deadwood then Sundance Wyoming. Most people come from north through Belle Fourche SD and Aladdin Wyoming. The bike coming from north was unbelievable. Literally solid bikes for almost 40 miles. The bikes were sitting on hwy 212 backed up for 3 miles waiting to get into Stonehouse bar. I've never seen anything like it. Can't imagine what Hewlett looked like this afternoon. What a zoo. Going basically in reverse, our traffic wasn't too bad. I wish I had a go pro. Literally couldn't pass a vehicle even if you wanted to in 40 miles. Solid bikes.....
