  1. From a mechanical or a what-can-go-wrong standpoint, the Royal Star is basically the same thing as the later RSVs and you can look it over just the same way. With only 17,000 miles, probably all you'll find is a mouse nest or dry rotted tires. Amazingly this bike still weighs around 800 lbs. Not very much less than the RSV at all. Can lilsis handle a big and heavy bike?
  2. The half disc and the wire are way at the back of the clutch pack too. If you only change the spring and don't take any of the plates out, you can't even see the thing.
  3. Looks like it's past time to dump Harley stock. And if it's just union antics, then let 'em leave town and cut their own throats.
  4. You shouldn't need to get the wire. If your clutch is still stock, it will be in there. If you're not changing out the half disc, you'll leave it in place. The main spring is on the outside of the whole clutch pack. Very easy to change.
  5. About all I know is a basic Maple and Oak myself. I only know what a Japanese Maple is because this maple tree in my yard would come out red in the spring which I thought was very odd and I wanted to know what it was. Very windy today and tough to get a clear picture. I think this is what you would call a "nevergreen".
  6. I'd appreciate it if folks would take it easy on pictures like this. This is ridiculous. Not everyone has a high speed connection. I sat here for five minutes and gave up. Instead of using a third party picture host, load pictures onto the board so they show up as thumbnails and can be opened individually. Thanks.
  7. 1) I don't remember how many friction plates there are, but the upgrade has the same amount as stock. 2) If you use the PCW kit, the wire is something you take out when you remove the half disc and install the full disc. PCW's kit has full instructions. It's not difficult. 3) Yes, a heavier spring alone can be installed. Use a VMX spring. IMO it would be worth it. 4) I think PCW's kit cost maybe $75 or something like that. I installed PCW's kit a year ago. If I had it to do again, I'd get a VMX spring and be done with it. I would leave the half disc in place and not get the full disc. Using the full disc cuts the friction zone in half. It's been a year and I'm still not used to it. I'd much rather have a wider friction zone. I'd put the half disc back in, but I seem to have misplaced the wire. So I tolerate it. I'll turn that wire up sooner or later.
  8. Here it is, one of our local fire trucks. As for a new target, I'm not very creative and I'm not reading how many pages to see what's been done before. Because we ride Japanese bikes, how about you and your bike in front of a Japanese Maple tree. This is a good time of year to show one off. In the springtime, their leaves come out deep red right from the beginning. They're never green. I have one in my yard. Who else has one?
  9. No windshield in 34º. I don't know how you do that. I don't mind the looks of the windshield that much. Now I really do not care for the looks of the hand guards at all, but when my fingers get so cold that they can't function, for me that's a safety issue and this becomes a matter of function over form. They do stretch my riding season out quite a bit. I take them off in the summer. Whatever happened to the reusable hand warmers? They'd last for hours when activated. When they were done, boil them in water for a few minutes to reset them, then they were good to use again. I used to have a couple but they disappeared sometime. Now all I can find are these throw away ones.
  10. When I am in a thread and I try to use the mark forums read under the quick links at the bottom of the page, I get the following message. If I use the one at the top of the page, it works fine. Only the bottom one does this. It's happened a couple times now. I can't say this is terribly important. Other links work fine. But I thought you might like to know. Your submission could not be processed because a security token was invalid.
  11. I have a set of hand guards from National Cycle that I put on the bike in cold seasons. They'll keep the hard wind off of your hands and make whatever other gloves you use work a lot better. I know, you don't like windshields. You may not want them either.
  12. Yamaha makes a tank bag designed for the RSV.
  13. Very nice. I like these red and white '96s. And they actually were patterned after the Indian too.
  14. Solid wheels will be aftermarket, and expensive. Wow. And I thought I found mine with low mileage, 14,500 when it was nine years old. Mine has over 65,000 now. Your bike probably never even had the oil changed in it. Keep your eyeballs out for some rides around here this summer. Maybe we can try to meet. I have some ideas for one I'd like to put together, but man we're busy this summer.
  15. Well, you about have to remove the slides to replace the diaphragms, so that may not be it. Did you verify that they were still free when you put everything back together?
  16. Carburetor slides that are stuck closed would cause these symptoms.
  17. My bike is a standard, like yours. It just has a pile of stuff on it. When they were sold new, they would have been identical, stripped down, bare bones bikes. On your bike I see: chrome - carb covers, breather covers, choke knob, motor mount covers, maybe an oil fill cap - I can't see it well enough, radiator side covers, brake pedal cover, shift lever covers, horn relocation kit, rider's floorboards, passenger pegs, passenger peg side covers, side covers (below the seat), I can't see the center cover between the two side covers - it may be chrome (red would be stock), trim on front and rear of front fender, trim on rear of rear fender. None of that stuff was standard. The passing lamps and headlight visors were add ons as well as the tank strap and bags. If the clutch and front brake lines are braided, that's not stock. The grips and mirrors are not stock. Plus whatever wheels/trim rings and mufflers you have. That's all I can make out. Still missing a few pieces though. Richmond, eh? Oh we'll have to meet up on a ride sometime.
  18. Yes, there is quite a lot of accessory chrome on that bike. They all look like Yamaha pieces though, rather than aftermarket, all except for the mufflers. I could list off everything I see if you want. I can't see enough of the wheels to tell what they are. They might be stock wheels with trim rings on them. I know trim rings were once available, but I don't think very many were ever sold. The sissy bar is a Y add on piece, and the seats and backrest are either Corbin or made for Yamaha by Corbin.
  19. I've been using the H7616 available from NAPA and maybe elsewhere too. It's a 35W clear glass spotlight that puts out a narrow beam. A pair of these light up the road real well at night. They'll make it seem like your headlight doesn't even work.
  20. I think by adjusting the slides, he means shimming the needles in the slides to step them out a little which would make it richer. This would not be my first step however. It was not necessary on my wife's bike. The PMS screws are the pilot mixture screws, or just mixture screws. You will have to remove the carbs and drill out the brass caps over the screws to get to them. Then I can't remember if they must be adjusted on the bench or if they can be reached with the carbs back in the bike. It's been a while since I did this. Start by backing them out 1/4 turn and see what happens. Slightly discolored head pipes don't necessarily mean anything. It's pretty normal. If they're badly discolored, that means the exhaust temperature is too hot, meaning the fuel mixture is too lean. Richen 'em up.
  21. That is a cool looking car.
  22. The bike is gone? That was fast. And - why?
  23. Yup. Mine never whined at all until I tried synthetic oil because everyone said it was better. Went back to regular oil and it finally went mostly away, but not completely.
  24. The tank will not fit an RSV. It's a completely different thing. This package is pretty much only good for '96 - '01 Royal Stars. I'd like to see what pieces you put on the bike.
  25. My wife rides one of those, and I did it. Even the wife could tell it idles smoother and take off is smoother without it. Simply pull it all off. Twist and pull the fittings out of the heads. Then find a couple empty .45 caliber shells and tap them into the holes. They're a perfect fit. He may want to back the PMS screws out a bit too.
