  1. Are these things potted in epoxy? How did you guys get the epoxy out to where you can access the circuitry like this without damaging things?
  2. "Without using wood." Wow, I didn't know that was such a problem. How about this - cut a few scraps of wood and you can avoid the expense and hassle of yet another piece of equipment. The bike sets on the jack solidly enough that I can climb up and sit on it. How much more stable can you get than that? I totally fail to see the point of getting an adapter thingy. I guess some folks apparently think like Rube Goldberg.
  3. It should work fine. You'll need to cut some 2x4 scraps about 1 1/2" wide to go between the jack and the frame of the bike so that everything clears okay. Otherwise the jack will set on the oil pan and not be stable.
  4. Well, he has to be the only one. I suppose everyone will make a defective tire once in a while, but this is the first I've heard of this one. The narrower size is 130/90/16, or MT90/16.
  5. I smell a photochopshop.
  6. Ouch! That really stinks.
  7. Scares me leaving those loose like that. And there are bosses on the inside of my fins holding them in place. In fact, I added some shims to them to hold the plugs a little tighter because they were trying to leak.
  8. Wow, stoutman! What is keeping the block plugs in place and keeping the antifreeze from spraying everywhere???
  9. Instead of being bare aluminum, the engine was painted black and then the edges of the "cooling" fins were ground to strip the paint off and be shiny and stand out better. I don't know what models were like that for sure. I thought it was only the midnight versions, but that might not be right.
  10. Is this what you're looking for? It's a Royal Star engine rather than the RSV, as it has four mufflers, 28mm carbs, and no front head motor mounts.
  11. The manual is out to lunch on shifting points. My guess is that it's eyewash for the EPA, who doesn't like it when engines are revved up much. Supposedly makes emissions worse. They like rpms kept low, and it doesn't matter what other expense there is. Automatic transmissions in cars will also shift up way too early. A good average guideline for shift points is: 25, 40, 50, and 60. That assumes a top speed of 60 mph; don't shift into high gear until you've reached your top speed and have stopped accelerating. If top speed is higher stretch them out, and if it's lower they can be shortened up a bit.
  12. How about voting for the best stupid gearhead story - stupid things that you've done while working on your bike, car, or something else in the garage.
  13. Third gear at 120kph is just fine if you're trying to accelerate quickly. I've done as much as 130 kph in second. The engine really can't be hurt by revving too high. The rev limiter will protect it. This engine does perform better when allowed to rev up.
  14. Pretty much all Yamaha mufflers sound like that drilled out, not just the Ventures. Shoot, they sound like that undrilled too, only not as loud. I tried drilling the mufflers on my wife's V Star 1100 for a little sound. Now I think they sound terrible.
  15. I had to use one of those once. Not on this bike, but on a car I had years ago. There were two or three oversizes of bolts available. They cut their own threads while you turn them in. They do work. And at this point it wouldn't really matter if you used one with metric threads or standard.
  16. I wouldn't throw the towel in on the Venture so fast. In their latest DVD that I have they show an RSTD doing the course. The Venture can't be that much different. While I'm not as good as they are, I have found the video to be a big help. Just the simple realization that big bikes can be handled like this is a big step. I had been riding big bikes for several years, and the first time I saw a big bike leaned over like that and turning that sharp my jaw hit the floor. I sure think the DVD is worth the money.
  17. Check out this four minute show. Not very dial up friendly, sorry. For anyone who doesn't have their DVDs, they're worth getting. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHo6kZc33Ks]YouTube - Ride Like a Pro Rider Skills Show[/ame]
  18. qgrubbs, would you just as soon like to keep the centerstand if it were easier to get the bike up on it? I have an idea for an easier to use centerstand. It's an idea I've had for quite a while, but I don't know if there would be much of a market for it, and don't know how to go about finding that out. So I haven't put much thought into developing it. Who would like to have an easier to load centerstand for their bike? It doesn't matter what year or even what bike. Pretty much anything big and heavy: HD dressers, GWs, whatever.
  19. It doesn't seem like it should be this cool yet. I'm thinking it's a bit cooler than average right now. I'm not ready to wind down the riding season yet. Well, there is no "yet". I would never be ready to do that. I will be getting myself some heated gear this year.
  20. Since you have a laser temp gauge, trying aiming it at the exhaust pipes just after the heads and see if you have a cold one. You'll have to get right on the pipes themselves, not just on the heat shields. If that's not it, you may just be jetted too rich.
  21. Hey, it's all in fun. I might as well jump in with everyone else. And my bike isn't a Hardley wanna be. I get more people ask me if it's an Indian. I'm seriously thinking about putting an Indian front fender on it, just to embellish the look a little. I think they look really cool. Us not making to CO had nothing to do with the bike, but rather with scheduling. We both wanted to go badly.
  22. Oh I think we understand pretty well. Tupperware is falling off of the 1st gens like they're going out of style. Oh, they are out of style. A 1st gen is desperately trying to update itself.
  23. Did you also find this list? Our bikes fall into group five, down at the bottom. There are 65 or so oil filters on that list that will fit our bikes. Both of these Baldwin filters are listed there. And for $6.44? Wow, sorry about that. Down here, the Supertech from Mallwart runs only about $2.50. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=523
  24. It is. Your quote is wrong for some reason. Check his actual post.
