  1. I have a dyno sheet showing 90 rear wheel hp, where the rest of you will be in the mid 70s. But the D3K is only part of it.
  2. The stock spark advance curves in this bike are very poor. More spark advance, up to the point of detonation, will give better gas mileage and more power both. The D3K also allows raising the rev limit, for those who have installed bigger cams along with heavier valve springs, like me. Carbs won't need rejetted. Spark advance has nothing to do with jetting requirements.
  3. I'm running curve 5, and I'm also burning the cat pee gas. I have been running like this for two years now.
  4. There must be something to that, because of the wide mileage variation people get out of them. But there's something inconsistent about it too. I once ordered a rear D404 through the dealer, who did not get it from Y but from an aftermarket type source, it might be Tucker Rocky or something like that; I know that because he told me he gets better prices through them. I got 15,000 miles out of that rear tire. At this point that tire is gone, and I run Avons now anyway.
  5. My mistake. I was looking at a Royal Star wiring diagram, which shows that the fuse which covers the carb heaters also covers the horn, turn signals, and brake lights at least, and maybe another thing or two. When I looked at the wiring diagram for the RSV, it turns out there is a dedicated fuse for the carb heaters.
  6. You could pull the connectors off of each individual carb. Or there's a plastic connector at the front of the carbs that separates if you ever need to pull the carbs from the bike. You could leave that apart. Pulling a fuse isn't an option. The fuse that covers the heaters also covers several other things. In my case I didn't disconnect it. I never connected it when I swapped the carbs. And there are no wires on my bike to connect it to.
  7. Carb heaters are an emissions thing. If one were to go bad or a relay were to fail, you'd never know the difference, and neither would the air. The Venture carbs that I swapped onto my bike have heaters in them, but I didn't connect them to anything because my original carbs didn't have heaters and there was nothing on my bike to which to connect them. The heater connector is just dangling in there. I've ridden in temps as cold as 0* many times and never had any trouble with the carbs freezing up. As long as the roads and the weather are clear, I ride. The cold temps don't stop me, and neither has a frozen carb, because it just doesn't happen. Carb heaters take, what, 15 W a piece for power, times 4? Disconnect them and get yourself an extra 60 W for lighting or heated gear.
  8. Yep, that was me at Pink Floyd's ride. Itching to post this message? Well, not really. It kinda crept up on me. I don't know how my month (October) got here so fast. What the stinking heck happened to this summer??? I ain't ready to quit riding yet. For that matter I probably never would be ready. Actually this picture is a bit dated. Both Lori's and my bikes are accessorized quite a bit differently now. Hers has a solo luggage rack, solo seat rail, no bags, driver's backrest, and a windshield. I've lost track of how many things have been added or changed on mine. They're never really done.
  9. It's my turn now. For those who have this year's Venturerider calendar, y'all get to look at my bike for the next month.
  10. So what do you think of this modified pillow top seat so far here, Dan? Inquiring minds and sore bums want to know.
  11. Do you not like McCarthy's there in Defiance? I was there last summer and they seemed nice enough. Much easier to deal with someone in person.
  12. What year?
  13. I lopped four inches off of the top of the windshield on my wife's V Star 1100. Here's how I did it. I'll try to keep this short and readable. Start by tracing the shape of the top curve on a piece of posterboard. Move the posterboard down to where you want the top to be. Lay out some clear tape on the windshield and drew a new line. (Later when I went to peel the tape up, it took off a clear coating where it was. I don't think I'd use tape again. Just draw the line right on the windshield.) Rough it out on a bandsaw. I used a wood blade because it's all I have. Put a towel on the bandsaw table to keep from scratching things up. Sand nicely to the line and get your final shape with a stationary table mounted belt sander. Again use a towel on the table. Use a wood rasp by hand to bevel the new edge a bit on both sides. Use a finish sander to smooth and round the edge. I started with about 100 grit and moved through a couple finer grits. I finished by hand sanding with 360 grit. I thought I would need to use finer grits than this, but this was already better than the factory edge was. So I stopped there. It doesn't take as long as this sounds. I think it took longer to type this than to do the whole job.
  14. Yamaha's filters are not only overpriced, the filter element is garbage, a very close second to Fram. I'd use a Honda filter before I used a Yamaha filter. In fact, when I bought my bike it had a Honda filter on it. While their construction is decent, they're also overpriced. Here is a list of about 65 filters that will fit the bike. This the most complete list I've ever seen. Our bikes fall into group 5 down at the bottom. A real favorite around here is the Supertech ST7317 from Mallwart. It runs only a couple bucks and is a well constructed filter. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=523
  15. Hey Donald, time to empty out some PMs. I can't respond to yours. I sent a money order today that has my address in it. You should see it in a day or two.
  16. Can you give us a deadline this year so we know how long we have to get something together?
  17. Wow. Where did you get information like that, and where would I get that kind of info for a second gen?
  18. I'll take that driver's backrest if dragerman doesn't. I'll take those HD taillights too. Look for a PM.
  19. That's too bad. You can't sell what you don't carry. Not everybody wants GWs either. That's a stupid statement. The dealers around here always have one or two a year. Unfortunately for you, IN is a long ways from NJ. But there have to be some between here and there. Tell them that if they don't want to sell one, you'll go find someone who does.
  20. ... yeah, or an electrical short.
  21. They're called a Star Chief. There's even a forum about them.
  22. That's bizarre that that is so difficult to get off. Have you tried mineral spirits? Have you tried a hair dryer or a heat gun?
  23. I really like the look of the Indians. It's too bad they have to be so doggone expensive. Yamaha cruisers lend themselves nicely to imitating the look of the Indian. Putting the Indian front fender on a Yamaha bike isn't all that difficult. I have several pictures of bikes done like this. Here are a couple pics of Royal Stars, same model as mine, with an Indian looking fenders. I'd like to do a front fender like this myself eventually.
  24. Now that one sounds like a legitimate speed trap. That's more than just giving someone a ticket for speeding. That's sabatoge. I read a few comments about various locations with which I'm familiar on that site. Much of it is just whining about not being able to break the law. In one comment a guy identified himself as an LEO and responded to some of it with basically, "Don't like tickets? Don't speed. Reap what you sow." Someone told me something years ago that I've always remembered. "It's a real cushy life if you live within the rules." I can't say I always heeded it then, and I still don't always. But it sure is nice to be able to stroll down the road and fully not care if there's an LEO right around the next curve and not be constantly worrying about getting a ticket for speeding. I live on a very busy two lane country road where people are constantly speeding. The road is really too narrow for the speed limit to be as high as it is, and be that as it may, for many people it's still not fast enough. Twice now I've had someone go flying around me only to have a cop go by us the other way within barely another a mile, wheel around, pass me, and stop the guy. It's really hard not to chuckle.
