Pros & Cons On Front Tire
pegscraper replied to yamahamer's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
A narrower front tire helps the bike corner easier and not feel so heavy in a corner. The wider the tire is, the higher a "hill" the bike has to climb over the side of the tire to lean over. I like the narrower front tire and won't go back. I think most here like the narrow front tire, but a few haven't. I guess it's just personal preference. -
I'm glad you were paying attention. Anticipating things like this is always better than trying to formulate a reaction at the last second. It can save many accidents.

Carburator draining
pegscraper replied to Midnight's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
There are drain plugs, but they're not easy to reach for attaching drain tubes and loosening the screws. Put the gas stabilizer in it, run it for a few minutes, and call it good. It's never caused me any problems. -
The 2000 Millenium Venture comes in these ivory paint and tan seat colors. It's not called a Palomino, but it's the closest thing you're going to find. And I'm pretty sure this is the only year for these colors. I found a member here who has one in his gallery. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/vbpicgallery.php?do=view&g=1034

Sigh. Fame is so fleeting.

The question did mention "Royal Star". That ain't a 1st gen... I'm sure it must be hard to realize that the world did continue to revolve after 1993. (I won't poke too hard though. I'm not that far behind y'all.) I'm not positive, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's a one year deal, like virtually every other paint color combination from Y. A Venture Lite is probably your only option. How do you identify that as a '97? The basic style didn't change from '96 - '01.

Just my own guess here. I think the low shift points are eyewash for the EPA. Since these are manual transmissions and they have no control over shift points, Y has to recommend these low shift points to placate them. Car manufacturers have been making automatic transmissions shift up too early for many years now, killing part throttle acceleration, and putting in overdrive gears that are too high (which our bikes have). One has to hold the gas pedal down farther than really necessary to make the trans shift where it ought to. And those cars with sticks have a shift light that comes on way too early. The one and only manual car we ever owned, I got into the dash and pulled the shift light out. It truly defines the term idiot light. The key words back up there were "they have no control". They don't like that.

I think someone is lost in 1st gen land. This is a Royal Star Palomino. I don't know the year of this, or what other years the Royal Star was offered like this. The 2000 Millenium edition Venture is done in this color combination, but I don't think it's called a Palomino. Check the June Venturerider calendar picture. The member doesn't have a photo gallery here. Maybe someone else has one.

Am I right, Squeeze, that drilling out the slide holes causes them to open earlier in the operation of opening the throttle, needing less manifold vacuum drop to cause them to open? Are the Dynojet springs stronger or weaker than stock?

I don't have much support for this comment, I don't know if it's really true or not, but FWIW - I have more than once heard parts counter guys say that the worst oil available today is still better than the best oil we had available 40 years ago during the muscle car era.

My winter project is top secret. It's so secret I'm not even telling the wife. Yes, it does have to do with the bike. It has to do with the need for more power.

I have the Avons and the narrower front tire on mine. I really like them and see no reason to try anything else. I have over 10,000 miles on them now, and at the rate they're going, I'll probably get 14 or 15,000 out of them. Stock size is really the only option for the back. Wider ones will almost certainly rub the swingarm.

That seat will fit any '96 - '01 Royal Star. That's the seat pan they have. I wouldn't spend too much money on that seat. They're terrible. They're terrible to sit on, and they don't even look good on the bike. I got two sets of seats when I got my bike, and that was one of them; they came in a box. I tried it one time, and that was the end of that. It did come in handy though. I used the seat pan to adapt other seats to my bike and try them. In the end I would up with a Corbin dual tour anyway.

Most hair dryers anymore don't get hot enough to do the job. It takes a heat gun to do it. There is a wide window between softening adhesive and stripping paint; nothing to worry about there. Then use the light solvents like mineral spirits to clean off the remaining adhesive.

And we wonder why HD riders make fun of Jap bikes.

Okay, where did you find the Adjure lenses and bulbs? Do they have to be black dots, or will other H4 bulbs work?

Wow, that was fast. And, I believe so, yes. It's the standard Y passing lamp setup. Will those 4.5" headlights fit in Y's housings, or will they only fit Revenge Cycle's housings?

Ya think so? I don't know. I wouldn't be surprised if even the sportbike crowd didn't go for that. Too much weight for one thing. Not "flickable". And too much unspsrung weight. This is one of those experimental gotta try it just to see what happens kind of things.

A long time ago, in the days of B.C. (before crash), there was a thread with this title. I had bookmarked it, but post crash now it's gone. IIRC the information, someone had described how he put regular headlights in the passing lamps housings that had both high and low beams to them. I would really like to find this information again, especially what lamps were used and where to find them. Anybody have any information on this?

The pillow top seats from the Venture are the softest seats anywhere. They're not a direct fit on your bike, but would mount with a simple L bracket. I tried a set of these pillow tops on mine though, and realized that softness is not what I needed. I came across a Corbin dual tour seat for a good price and got it. Soft it is not. It is the opposite of soft. But amazingly it is the most comfortable seat I've tried. The shape of the thing is the reason. If the shape of the seat is wrong to begin with, no add on type of pad is going to help, and I've tried a bunch of them. This seat sets me a bit farther back and bit higher on the bike than anything else, giving me more leg room than I thought this bike had in it. I'm 6'1" myself and really appreciate that. With every other seat I'd tried, I felt like I was sitting on the back edge of the tank. If you'd like to give one a try, there's one on ebay right now, item 120175873153.

Setting Float Levels
pegscraper replied to Freebird's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
It sounds to me like you did it right. Here's a pic of when I did mine, carbs upside down, floats down with the needle resting on the seat. Were all of yours as high as that near one? Were any of them even the same? The float level affects how rich or lean all the rest of the circuits in the carbs run, and when they're not the same that will affect the sync. You'll compensate for it at idle with the sync screws, but then at anything above idle they won't be operating the same. I'm not surprised that if you had to move the float level very much that the carbs would need to be resynced. You'll probably find it running smoother now than it ever has since you've owned it. It'll be interesting to see if this helps your gas mileage. You've said that at one time your gas mileage was good and then got bad, meaning that something changed then. Generally, once floats are set, they don't move much, if at all. They're good for a long, long time. As far off as it looks like yours were, they were never set right from the factory. I found mine the same way. -
Honda and Yamaha filters are not the same thing. I don't know about Suzuki. Honda filters are decent, I've seem them, just too expensive.

Put a set of these tire chains on your scoot and you won't need to quit riding just because of snow. You have a set yet, Charlie? http://www.mv-motorrad.de/cosmoshop/lshop,showdetail,13240,e,1105803788-30287,,10107,,,.htm

Please, I beg you, take the Fram filter off immediately and put something else on. Don't even wait for the next oil change. Fram makes the worst filters on the market. Cardboard fibers have been known to come out of the filter element and ruin engines. Y's own filters are a close second to the worst. Here's a list of more than 50 filters that are better. The Supertech ST7317 is around $2.50 from Mallwart and is about the best deal around. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=523
