The rear suspension is the same thing in the '99 and newer Venture and the '05 and newer RSTDs. Any links that will work in the Venture will fit your RSTD.

VMax rear end - first 600 miles
pegscraper replied to BigShell's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
So that's where the rear gear from my bike went. I was wondering. Squid had bought that from me a while back after I did the swap. I rolled my own though. I took a V Max rear gear housing and milled the speedo sensor boss out to match and removed the shock bolt and installed it. It's a lot cheaper that way, but you do have to have a mill or have a friend who's a machinist. The original rear gear sat on the shelf for a while in case I didn't like the results. But it only took about a day of riding and I knew it would never go back on the bike, and I sold it off. -
What kind of info are you looking for? Here's a site with a lot of technical stuff. http://vmaxoutlaw.com/main.html Here's one site I know of. They cater to the new model yet to come out, but I think they do talk about the older ones too. http://starvmax.com/

The V Star is a shaft drive. Did you get a Roadstar? That would have a belt.
-
The '05 and newer RSTD rear shock will be the same as the Venture. The '96 - '01 Royal Stars, whatever the model name, are totally different.

I like the engine being something besides a V twin. That's hard to do in a cruiser style.

Here is a link to the carb swap article I wrote. In it you will find a drawing of the adapter plates that I used. That should give you most of what you need. The size of the intake ports is actually 30mm x 40mm. I made the oval in the adapter plate just a bit bigger so it would be sure not to overhang into the airstream. For making an intake flange, you may want to make it a hair smaller. http://www.venturerider.org/carbswap/ Yes, unheated garages are a drag. I have one too.

Where would that table of jet sizes be? I'm not finding it.
-
They are the same thing as the V Max carbs use too. Y was still putting them in brand new bikes up until last year.

You could say that you were from just about any motorcycle forum out there and they would give you a discount. I'm real curious what's new between IV and V. Do they have different obstacle courses, or are they the same courses with different footage of them training different people? For those who have cut tennis balls in half to use for cones, has anyone ever taken one apart only to notice that you had cut it perfectly along the seam? Wouldn't that have to be about like breaking a mirror, or stepping on a crack, or walking under a ladder or something?

I was thinking about this myself not long back. Where'd you go?

I like it. Not the girlback one though. I would take one in a gray short sleeve.

Ah, now I see why you wanted that picture of a V4 engine a while back. I'm sure you're aware that with four mufflers on it and the wrong set of carbs, that that's a Royal Star engine, not really a Venture engine. But close enough maybe. I don't know of any such picture of a Venture engine. Besides, four mufflers definitely displays that it's a V4 and not a V twin. After seeing the back, in my head I heard myself saying the line "with double mint gum".

I'm with you frankly. I totally and completely fail to see the point of this, and I alluded to that way back in my first reply. But the guy is looking for some information, and I happen to know some of it. So I guess I'll tell him what I know and let him do with it what he wants.

I wonder if the intake boots from a 1st gen might work for you. They have 34mm carbs, and would also accept the 35mm carbs from a V Max. The carb bodies are the same there, as far as outside diameter goes. Only the internal bore is different. The outside diameter of the carb body where it goes into the intake boot is 42mm. The carb centerlines of these are vertical. They don't tip in towards the top like the 2nd gens do. When these intakes are installed, the tops of the intakes are level. I don't know if the adapter plates might need to be wedge shaped to tip them in a little to make things fit under the tank or something. I have those dimensions of the bolt spacing and port opening somewhere that I used for making my adapter plates. Let me go dig them up.
-
They fit the 32mm carbs. They are the same thing you have on your '06 Venture. My bike came with only 28mm carbs and the intakes have a different bolt pattern. I needed to make these adapter plates to mount the 32mm intakes and carbs on my engine.

I like it not being a V twin. I like the four mufflers, and having them symmetrical, the same number on each side, not two on one and nothing on the other.

Thank you, thank you. That will be much appreciated.

I can't tell from the small avatar pic if your bike is the two or four muffler model. If you have the two muffler model it should be a simple swap. I'm not sure if the bag mounting brackets are the same or not, but if not, that should be all you have to change. If you have the four muffler model you have a lot more to do, but it can be done. You'll have to get the two muffler exhaust setup, plus all the muffler and bag mounting brackets to go with that. I'm thinking that the trunk brackets will bolt right up. I've seen another '97 Royal Star done like that.

The kinds of ideas you have for mounting intake boots will work. It's how I did my carb swap, which required different intake boots, and my heads didn't have the correct mounting holes or even blank bosses to use. I shaved 1/8" off of the bottom of the intake mounting flanges and made adapter plates out of 1/8" steel. I've used both plain steel and made a few sets for others from stainless. The intake boot flange is now just shy of 1/4" thick, and is still strong enough to do the job. It's not like they have to hold much. I would have liked to have grooved the new surfaces for O rings like the V Max uses, but I didn't have the tooling to do it. So I sealed things with silicone. These pictures should help. I have shoved 35mm carb bodies into the stock intake boots designed for 32mm carbs, but they don't fit well and the neck right below the carb is really too small for the larger carbs anyway. More appropriately sized intake boots with a modified flange to fit is a better way to go. That intake repair stuff you're looking at does say "not meant to repair cracks that go all the way through". It might not do what you're wanting to do with it. I'm real curious what bike that intake in the main picture is from, too. Anyone have any ideas?

The only thing better then a Black Venture is...

You mean like this? -
I don't click on it once I see it's a video. But there's no way to know it's a video until I open the thread. There's a folder not too far down from the watering hole for videos. The link there has the word "videos" right in it. It shouldn't be too hard to find. Put videos in the video folder. Don't be so disorganized.

What about a situation where the motorcycle doesn't trip the stoplight? Normally we can sit there a reasonable amount of time to determine that's the case and then go through it when traffic allows. And I understand that at least in IN, the police understand the problem and won't nail you for that. But with a camera this can no longer be done. You'll sit there forever or get a ticket. No other options. What about a situation where you're following a semi truck in town, at normal distance, and you literally can't see the light until you're halfway through the intersection? If the truck pushes the light or blows it red, then you've done it too, and you have no way to know until it's over. It happens all the time in town. It's an understood thing. Stoplight cameras and anonymous tickets in the mail are bull*&^t, and if or when they start becoming prevalent in my area, I will do what it takes to fight it.
