  1. One good sign of better weather ahead is that daylight saving time is here tonight. I lose one hour of sleep tonight, and for that I get an extra hour of daylight every evening for the next several months now. That means more wrenching or riding time. It's a trade I gladly make. I love it.
  2. They do cry a little through the winter time when they don't get ridden enough. A new use for duct tape. I used small washers to do the same thing. I've heard of some using beer can shims.
  3. Now if I only knew where to find some port-a-walls, or some white wall paint, I'd try one. Gotta have my white walls.
  4. Cadillac 472/500. No such thing as a small block or big block. Just one big block.
  5. Sounds like you must have tapped into the turn signal circuit somehow. I can't explain the radio though. Hard to say what happened without looking at it.
  6. With all the snow everyone is getting, are we still close enough to the beginning of March for this to constitute coming in like a lion? Hopefully that means it will go out like a lamb, as in warm up early. Hey Albore, start speaking somewhere. We need some hot air around here.
  7. One of the biggest differences is going to be the engine type. Ours is a V4 and the Nomad will have a V twin. If you have a preference one way or the other that may help. The V4 will like to be revved up a little higher than the V twin will. If you get to take one for a test drive keep that in mind. If you shift it too low it will feel like it has no power. Wind it up a little and it will outrun the Nomad. In fact, don't be afraid to wind it up until it hits the rev limiter, which will be about 80 or so in second gear. With the rev limiter you can't hurt it. Other differences would be the bag or trunk style, and fairing or windshield style. This V4 engine has been around since '83. It's virtually maintenance free and will last a long time. Many bikes around here have over 100,000 miles and are still going. With the Nomad, I believe you have to add a cruise control if you want it. The Venture already has one. Let us know what you pick.
  8. Nah. I'm more of a naturally aspirated kind of a guy. I'd like to figure out how to put this one on.
  9. Congratulations Gary! I know that once bikes are in your blood, you can never quit. I was in a bad wreck once many years ago and it was six months before I could walk again. As soon as doc released me to work, I was back on a bike.
  10. Those carbs ended last night. Sorry. But there will be another set along.
  11. It'll help a little, but very little. Not worth the cost in my book. The carbs are still way too small for this size of engine.
  12. We were supposed to get dumped on with about 10", and we got a half inch. They keep hollerin' wolf and nothing happens. They oughtta be too embarrassed to even walk into work the next day. Still enough around that I can't ride though. Man I can't wait.
  13. Buy this one instead. It's from a well known company, and it's cheaper too. http://www.cruisercustomizing.com/detail.cfm?model_ID=42&Category_ID=5&manufacturer_ID=223&product_ID=6421&sblid_name=Electrical_Connection_Turn_Signal_Conversion_Kit__for_Yamaha_Royal_Star_Venture_
  14. If you'd rather not ruin the old handlebars, or if you'd like to use the weights on a bike that never had them - like mine - pick up the correct size metric nuts, grind them round to fit inside the bars, and weld them in place. Then sell the old bars on ebay for a few bucks.
  15. Thanks. And how would I identify a throttle cable set made for cruise control? Is it literally as simple as looking for the fifth cable in the junction box? I would like to find a set with the cruise cable.
  16. I'm not familiar with 1st gens at all. Was cruise control standard on the bikes or was it optional? How does the cruise servo connect to the throttle cables? Does it connect to the junction box right in front of the carbs?
  17. The '96 - '01 Royal Stars do leave a little to be desired in the hp arena, don't they? A V Max engine will probably go right in, but there are easier ways. We already have 100ccs more to start with, and our blocks are heavier too. When the V Max boys want to build up a radical engine, they will start with a Venture block because the bottom end is heavier. The V Max cams and springs are a direct swap into the existing engine. I've done it. Swapping cams and springs took me a day and a half. The early Royal Stars have 28mm carbs, for which Yamaha ought to be slapped. The later 32mm carbs are a real easy swap. Here's the article I wrote about it, hosted by this very board. 32mm carb swap If you're interested, I can make the adapter plates and mill the intakes down for you. I've made a few sets for people. Once I had all the parts assembled and ready to go, this swap took only an afternoon from start to finish. Check the dyno sheet in the article. The cam and carb swap together will give you 90 rear wheel hp, about 15 hp more than the newer Ventures and RSTDs, or about a 50% increase over what you have right now, with zero drop in gas mileage doing it. That's huge, and it's definitely worth the trouble. I did also have the V boost system in my bike for a while. Actually it's back out now, and the parts would probably be for sale if someone were interested. I have my eyeballs on something else, and both won't fit at the same time. Because even the 32mm carbs are still too small for this engine's displacement. There's more potential there yet. Then after that, get the D3K ignition module and swap in the V Max rear gear ratio. They will make a good difference too. There's a set of 32mm carbs on ebay right now, and not bringing much at the moment either.
  18. Well Rick, I think I'll be looking for a set of these R1/R6 calipers to install. Better braking sure sounds like a good thing. Whenever I practice a quick stop, my current brakes just don't inspire much confidence. I'll let you know how it turns out. It might be a bit though, as riding season isn't here yet. But I'm seeing light at the end of that long dark tunnel.
  19. Yes, but the cruisers are also the heaviest bikes. They ought to get brakes to match the needs of the bike. Cost is probably what it was. So the only difference is the one piece or two piece casting style then? The mounting bolt spacing is the same and both styles will bolt right up?
  20. Welcome among us. You wouldn't be the only one around here riding a V Star 1100. I've seen a few other members with them and my wife rides one. There's really only one rule we have around here, and that is, ya gotta post pics of the bike. So let's see it. There's a pic of my wife's bike in my gallery.
  21. I don't know about that. The winter air being more dense would have more nitrogen in it, no? Of course nitrogen gives better gas mileage and makes the tires wear longer dontcha know. We might just be better off using winter air all year. I ought to get an air tank just for inflating tires and only fill up the tank in the coldest of winter. Then I could have winter air all year long.
  22. I hear what you're saying, and from an academic standpoint it makes sense. But there are too many folks around who are doing it and not having problems with it, and saving a heck of a lot of money on tires. At some point one has to say that maybe there is something wrong with the academic theory. There was a discussion very recently on the Delphi Royal Star board about this too. clicky clicky Much the same story, a bunch of experts who haven't tried it saying it won't work. But the guy asking the question also turned up a lot of good information about sizes and brands. I'd like to try one, I almost certainly would do it, but I like my white walls too much.
  23. Some mag wheel cleaner or aluminum wheel cleaner works good. Spray it on and hose it off. It also works well for white walls.
  24. I don't find discomfort from using the front brakes. They just don't seem to be able to do what I thought they ought to. If the R6 calipers are the same thing as yours, they ought to feel the same then, no? I recall reading where some V Max owners will use the R6 or R1 front calipers, but I missed the point of it and didn't pay any attention to the whys or how tos. Now I guess I know. I'll have to go back and see what they were saying. So Y had 4 piston calipers on the 1st gens and then gave us only 2 piston units? Why would they downgrade the brake system like that? Why would they not give us the best brakes they could make? Buncha bozos. I believe I'll be looking for some different front calipers.
  25. I'd be inclined to try one, but I've never seen a car tire with white walls on both sides of it. It's pretty well out of the question for me. I understand the desire for getting more mileage out of the tires. The manufacturers can make them last longer and they know it. But when they have us all buying them at the current rate, why in the world would they want to make them last longer and reduce their sales.
