  1. Get that bike done, Dan. There are only a couple weeks left until Don's. DD isn't the only one who will be cruising southern IN. I'll be headed that direction with three other bikes, Brown county area all the way down to the Ohio River. I've been to that Mayberry Cafe in Danville too. I had a blast there because I'm a huge fan. But my friends who live in that town seemed rather bored while we were there. I think their only fun was listening to me tell them all about each episode within 30 seconds of a new one starting. There's a local station here that still shows Andy Griffith. I watch it every night. Last night's episode was Checkpoint Chicky, one of my favorites.
  2. No inspections in IN at all. I hate NY.
  3. And if he's riding a 1st gen, that would explain why he has a lot of time on his hands to be fiddling away on the 'net. (Bike needs fixed.)
  4. I hear tell that if you have a car tire on the back, you get so much traction with it that you couldn't lock up the rear wheel if you tried.
  5. Here are a couple favorite lines of mine. "Unless you can make me an offer I can't refuse, I'm going to have to let it set there." And, "That's not good enough, I can still refuse that." And if they still don't want your business, walk away with YOUR money in YOUR pocket.
  6. Yes, there are throttle cable adjusters at both the throttle grip and the carbs. There is a junction box in the middle for the cruise control, so each side needs to be adjusted independently.
  7. Is the shock actually bad, or does he just not like the ride? Unfortunately, there is nothing that can go in its place, at least not easily. Check the operation of the shock and you will see that this shock actually stretches out when the suspension "compresses". It's the strangest thing I've ever seen. Y changed this oddball rear suspension to more conventional setup in the later Ventures and TDs. I do know of one guy who has taken an air shock setup from a Venture and swapped it in, but it requires welding and custom fabrication. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
  8. Hey Squeeze, What 39mm carbs are you talking about that give a V Max 15 - 20 hp?
  9. The rack that goes in place of the rear seat should still be available from Y. For the rear rack, I've read that the one for a Roadstar will fit with just a bit of tweaking - also still available new. Or keep your eyeballs in ebay. They'll turn up sooner or later.
  10. Dontcha know that the second rule around here after posting pics is to put names on faces? Hardly anybody in here knows everybody. I recognize a couple faces here, but most I don't.
  11. Yamaha's own oil should be fine, although 10W30 is a little light weight. You might save that for the cooler months if you ride in the cold. Or mix it in one quart or a half a quart at a time with heavier oil and it would be okay. The filter number I don't know. Generally if the threads are the same and the seal is the same diameter, and it physically fits in the available space in the bike, it will work fine. There are many different filters that fit this bike. When I first bought my bike it had a Honda filter on it. Good construction and a decent filter, but too expensive. I use others.
  12. He had the steering bearings apart to grease them and now it shimmies and shakes? Like everyone else said, he didn't tighten them up enough when he put it back together.
  13. More horsepower, more charging current, electric adjustable windshield. No EFI.
  14. What's going to happen to that other Star site you were running?
  15. Chrome is always nice. But polishing can be done and maintained at home with little cost. I've heard tell that you really only have to wipe them down with metal polish about once a year to maintain the finish, but I really don't know. I haven't done mine yet. I'm putting it off until the factory finish looks really bad. But polishing is probably the way I'll go when the time comes.

  17. Yep. But the narrow front tire is real nice anyway.
  18. The only way to know what you'll like is to try them out for a while and see. What stinks is that seats cost so much money to trade around. I tried the pillow tops for a while. They turned out to be the worst thing I had tried. I wound up with a Corbin Dual Tour seat, and both the wife and I love it.
  19. Hey wildhair, where did you get that tire? And post some pics will ya? You know the rules around here. The reason there are motorcycle tires is because people buy them. They have y'all buffaloed into believing that motorcycle tires can't last very long. It's BS. For those who don't know how to think for themselves, you're certainly welcome to keep unnecessarily feeding excess amounts of money to the MC tire manufacturers. There is a new forum on Delphi just for this subject. It's been nice to be able to read, ask questions, and get information without others hollering that the sky is falling. http://forums.delphiforums.com/DarkSiding/start For those who want WWs, like me, here is a place that will take literally any tire you want and vulcanize a WW onto it of any size or width. What's great about this is that they can do both sides. Cost is really no worse than buying one rear MC tire, and depending on how long you keep a bike around, it may be the last rear tire you put on your bike. http://www.dbtires.com./index.htm
  20. I run both the leveling links and the narrower front tire. I like it a lot. I won't be going back.
  21. If it's a Venture, it won't be a '96 or a '98 either. The RSV Venture came out in '99. The 1st gen Venture's last year was '93.
  22. Now we know what he was doing during Biology class. Same thing I was doing. Thinking about other stuff. I'd be real curious what grades he pulled out of HS. The kid got a REAL education in his grandfather's shop. What keeps that thing balanced front to back? Rather interesting idea, and educational I have no doubt, but about as practical as a unicycle. Smog so thick in China that you can't see the sun?? I beg to differ.
  23. I wear them in the shop a lot and while mowing the lawn too. The lawn mower makes such a horrible racket. I can't imagine how I used to tolerate that without earplugs. I have wondered for a long time if my ears are more sensitive to loud noises than most though. I can feel stress in my ears just playing a grand piano for an hour. On the bike I wear them with or without a helmet. It seems my full face helmet almost makes the wind noise problem worse.
  24. The 10W30 is too light for hot weather. Shell Rotella T 15W40 is really nice oil. Just make sure whatever you used doesn't have "energy conserving" on it. I wouldn't use Y's filters. Too expensive, and junk besides. Here's a link to a list of oil filters. Our bike is group 5 way down at the bottom. The Supertech ST7317 from Mallwart is as good as anything. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=523 For rear gear oil level, just make sure it is up in the threads of the plug and you'll have plenty.
  25. The 2057 is quite a bit brighter, at least the brake filament is. The running light filament is the same.
