  1. Well, with four pickups like that, there may not be much that can be done. I know what the manual states the compression ratio of these engines is. And I flat don't believe it. They don't start like a high compression engine. They don't run like a high compression engine. And an engine that truly has 10.5:1 compression will not run 87 octane gas, while these do. Don't believe everything you read in the shop manuals. These act more like 8.5:1 engines.
  2. I got 16,000 miles out of my rear tire. The front one now has 17,000 and is still going. I got caught in the rain with them many times. I was happy with them.
  3. They aren't designed to be adjustable. I don't know what a guy is supposed to do if it is off or he's having trouble with pinging. But compression in these engines is so low that I figure it's pretty rare. Bad gas these days is a real possibility. It can be done though. I advanced my pickup coil by 4*. I slotted the holes out in the bracket and moved it over. Then used loctite to hold the screws in place. I forget the dimension. I calculated it from the distance it is from the center of the rotor. It gave a little more part throttle responsiveness. (I'm assuming that 1st gens have a similar mounting bracket here.)
  4. More faulty logic. I don't think anybody has said anything about them being interchangeable. A MT being inappropriate for a car doesn't make a CT inappropriate for a bike. Just because something is true going in one direction doesn't mean it will be true going the other direction. You might use either a spoon or a fork to eat a bowl of rice, but you wouldn't use a fork to eat a bowl of soup. All cumulous clouds are still clouds, but not all clouds are cumulous.
  5. I sure like mine. Can't ride for two weeks? Right in the middle of the summer? How frustrating that would be!
  6. Have you had a chance to use it yet? How did it work out for you? Unless they were way, way off though, I wouldn't expect a miracle.
  7. Sorry that happened to you. How maddening that would be. Thanks for the lesson.
  8. I sure wouldn't know why not.
  9. The cam chains have automatic tensioners on this bike. About the only thing there is to do is replace the wear bar if it's worn out.
  10. A little gas works real well. And it's still cheaper than anything else.
  11. Pinwall is not the cheapest game around, are they. I was thinking that the bracket might not be too bad though. I don't know. And let's see some pics of this project. I thought about doing this once, but the flavor that my bike developed doesn't lend itself to the fairing look.
  12. Might want to check ebay real quick. There is a pile of Venture parts there right now. Looks like someone is parting one out.
  13. What is so terrible about carburetors? Is it really so awful to have to manually operate a choke?
  14. I think the "25% increase" is on the stator for the 1st gen. The 2nd gen stator is rated for 55A. I had PMd a few people here a while back who have one and asked them how they were liking it. All said they liked it well enough. One guy said he had tested the current output of it and it was real close to 55A, I forget the exact number he mentioned. That much current will run anything you'd like to run on the bike. I'm wanting to get one of these myself.

    Bummer

I'd say they felt a little better than my stock ones did, but not as good as the R1 brakes I have now. Being on an interstate for 99% of the trip, I didn't use them very much.
  16. That double U turn box is also the only place where I lost points in the final test. I went outside in the second turn. But I had also just realized that bikes could turn that sharp in the first place, and there wasn't really enough time for individual practice of the exercises. I would have liked to work on that more while we were there. I didn't really get the technique figured out then. But I work on the RLAP stuff on my own now. We also had a couple people not pass the test, and they truly did not deserve to pass. The instructors would have been doing them a real disservice to pass them. Plus there were two or three others who dropped out earlier and never made it to the final test.
  17. Have you tried a heat gun? Much hotter than a hair dryer.
  18. I took the Abate class two years ago with my wife, as she wanted to learn to ride. I'd been riding street bikes, dirt bikes, and three wheelers for more than 20 years, and at the time I would have said that I could have gone right to the advanced course and didn't really need the basic one. But I was amazed to find that I learned a couple things. Before then, I didn't know that bikes could turn as sharp as they can. I realized that I would have done very poorly had I gone straight into the advanced class. We rode the little 125s, and when we left for lunch, man my bike never felt so heavy. I frankly think the class should be mandatory for new riders getting their license. I'd like to go back now and take the advanced course, especially after practicing some of the RLAP stuff, but I haven't yet.
  19. I've worked with engineers before myself in a manufacturing environment, and I will say that just because a guy has the title and position and pay of "engineer", has no bearing at all on what he actually knows. A couple of them were very good, many of them were mediocre, better at brown nosing than actually working, and for a couple of them it was clear that their being there had nothing whatsoever to do with their qualifications. Assuming that sound engineering decisions were made in the first place, then they have to get past the bean counters. Bean counters can turn good engineering decisions into bad ones. Some folks put too much faith in engineering and factory decisions. To blindly say that the factory must have done something a certain way for a reason, to assume that they made the best possible decision, and to think that no improvement can possibly ever be made, is very lousy logic and reasoning.
  20. I had an 81 XS11 several years ago, with full fairing, trunk, and side bags. They are quite fast. I attributed it to big cams and low gearing. Their cam specs were about the same as what a V Max has. Put some V Max cams in your Venture and it'll be just as fast. A lot of things are a lot of fun. But if you don't have the room and don't really have the money to spend... It's just one more thing to maintain.
  21. That's what I thought, the links are only a 1/4" different in length. They raise the bike by an inch. Can you tell a difference in the ride height?
  22. Wow, that's just maddening. Some people just need to have their head caved in.
  23. Here's an interesting pic that I spliced together showing the tread profile of my old worn out Avon vs. the Federal SS657. Each tire here is mounted and inflated to show its actual profile. Obviously I couldn't have both of them on the same rim at the same time, thus the splice. I may have gotten the scale of the Federal a hair smaller than that of the Avon, but they're pretty close. The new Federal is more rounded than the old worn out Avon. Of course the Avon would be more rounded when it was new. So it looks like the tread profile of the Federal would about match the profile of the Avon when it was about half worn down. It looks to me like a CT is not too square to use and is plenty rounded enough to have a good contact patch in a corner.
  24. I got thinking about something... You mention wanting the stock size front tire, and you mention wanting Avons. And I see WWs on your bike. Were you wanting to keep WWs on your bike? Unfortunately, Avon doesn't make a WW front tire in the stock size. They do make one in the narrower size that some like (I have one). For a WW front tire in the stock size, I know Dunlop makes one and Maxxis makes one. I don't know about Metz. What is on your bike now?
  25. Just don't get mixed up with your brain halfway somewhere else one day about which kickstand you put down - put the kickstand down on one side and lean the bike the other way and let go.
