Ignition coil problem
pegscraper replied to rek58's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
It sounds like the coil is worth pursuing further. It's not common, but there's been another member or two around here who had a coil go bad. You might try swapping that coil with a coil from another cylinder and see if the problem follows the coil or stays with the same cylinder. Just one advantage of having multiple coils. That should help you isolate the problem. -
If there isn't any backfiring in the exhaust, I'd leave the carbs alone. Just make sure they're well synced. As far as being sluggish in fifth when getting on it, downshift. You're lugging the engine. Fifth gear on this bike is an extreme overdrive and good for nothing more than maintaining a constant cruise speed. If you need to accelerate, downshift to fourth. And if you're really getting into it, go to third. This V4 engine likes to rev up.

Talking about heated gear in the middle of the summer? Yuck. So how did you like the jacket and equipment other than the seams coming apart?
-
Works fine for me.

What problems are you having already?

If it were about need, we wouldn't be riding anything any more advanced than what was available in the 1950s. A bike with 55 year old technology will get you around. What more do you need? In fact, HDs live by this very philosophy.

These things are equivalent to a distributor in an old car. You can play around with the spark advance. I used to run curve 5 and 8000 rpms. A while back I advanced the pickup coil 4* against the rotor, at which time I went back down to curve 4. Still at eight grand though. With VMX cams and springs, that eight grand comes up real fast too.

Hey, if we don't ban this stuff, our streams and rivers and oceans will flood, and there will be no more land. Stop Global Goring. (Was the narrator here on Dancing with the Stars last season? Do I have the same guy? I think he was the first one off.)

Four 2x4 blocks work just fine for me. I don't see a need for anything more.

That's quite the trio.

That's why I live in the country. The city sucks.

I tried synthetic once, and I went from an engine that was nice and quiet to an engine that chirped and screamed. The wife even noticed it and asked what in the world I had done to my bike now. I had done nothing but change to this synthetic oil that everyone raves about. The stuff is so expensive that I was going to get my use out of it. I ran it its full course, and it screamed at me the whole time. Went back to regular dino oil at the next oil change, and went back to a nice quiet engine. I will never run synthetic again in anything.

Very nice move, Kevin. I'm jealous actually. I want one in that color. I think it's going to be a while though. And mine is certainly nothing to throw rocks at anyway. Are you serious Joe? You were thinking about that one? Just can't make up yer mind, eh?

The 2nd gen intake boots do not have removable O rings. The 1st gens do, and the V Maxes do. His '99 will not.

Yep, 1/4 turn to a 1/2 turn is probably about right.

I'm sure the light would be fabulous. Honestly, I think those look disproportionately big. Maybe if they could be moved down and back a little bit, their size would fit in better. But how would you mount them there. I don't know.
-
A handful of people have done it. Just find all the trunk mounting brackets from a Venture and bolt everything on.
-
Unbolt them. Clean the surface on the heads. Bolt the new ones down.

I'll agree with you actually. Like I said above, I think Lynn is a girl's name. So did a librarian once who asked me if the card was mine or not. When I was very young I knew a girl named Lynn who shared my birthday, and even birth year. We were born a couple thousand miles apart and our parents didn't know each other until later. It was all coincidence. We used to share birthday parties. At that time I thought she was really cute. I don't know where she is today. I haven't seen her since junior high. I always thought it would be funny if I married a girl named Lynn. Didn't happen though.

Heel - Toe shifter has to go!
pegscraper replied to Owen's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I cut mine off and painted the steel with a bit of clear paint. It's been holding well for two years now and you don't see it unless you look right at it. I agree. I never had a bike before that had one, couldn't get used to it, after a while didn't even try to use it anymore, and it was nothing but in my way. I have a lot more left foot room with the thing gone.- 60 replies

Ah, I see. And I'm guessing the boards you added are aftermarket? Unless that company makes a heal shifter for their own boards, probably the only way to get a heal shifter would be to make some brackets to mount Y's own floorboards from a classic.

SHE??? I believe that Missionary Rider is a guy. And I am too. Did you call him she because of his name? That's another one for me. Lori and I have a long ongoing tally about whether Lynn is a guy's name or a girl's. She says it's a guy's name, and I say it's a girl's. And I just got another vote. She is losing this one badly. We have had people who don't know us see our names on paper as "Lynn and Lori". The person will read the first name and look up at my wife. Then they'll read the next name and ask who Lori is. I just stand there laughing at the poor embarrassed person as Lori stands there with her mouth open. I could relate countless examples. I always open threads or pictures in other tabs too, but not so much for this reason, but because I have only dial up here, and I can be reading one while others are still opening rather than waiting on them one at a time. Multi-tasking that way I don't waste time waiting for pages to open. I do the same thing in ebay too, most any site actually.

That bike has pegs on it rather than floor boards, doesn't it? I don't think anyone makes a heel/toe shifter for use with pegs. That's what a custom is, pegs, toe shifter, and a duck butt. I'd like one of those ORKs for Lori's V Star 1100 too, but I can remove the exhaust pipe a whole lot of times for what they're getting for those. What a crummy design that was.

I'll check it out. I have nieces and nephews - the next generation under me - who play around on facebook a lot. For the most part, I haven't seen much point, other than to see what they're up to and keep up with them. Lori uses it for that purpose too. I don't know much about it, but I'll look at your group anyway. Don't know that I want to put my life out there for Big Brother to so easliy watch.

RMS is root mean square, but that formula is wrong, isn't it? I thought the formula was 1/(sqrt2) to equal .707. For some reason the answer comes out the same. I don't know why that works. Maybe that's just the magic of the number.
