Checked and adjusted the PMS-way off
pegscraper replied to BigBoyinMS's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Not really. Turn them just enough that you don't have any popping on decel, and it's good. I'd certainly keep them all the same number of turns out. If you ever have opportunity, check the float level too. You'll most likely find none of them the same either, just like the mixture screws. Set them all the same and the bike will run smoother again. -
Here's a fun way to look at it. The 34mm carbs will have the same cross section flow area as the 35mm carbs with a 4.69mm diameter dowel rod sticking all the way through them would have.
-
Are you going to put some VMX carbs in your bike then? I'd be interested to hear if you think there's any real noticeable difference from the one mm larger bore.
-
The '99 RSV also has 32mm carbs. The later ones are all the same. As a1bummer has a 1st gen, the VMX carbs will pop right in place. The internal bore is a mm bigger, but the outside diameter where they fit the intakes is the same. The body is slightly thinner. Other than that, they're virtually identical. I should add that the choke linkage is a little different, but all the brackets will swap over. There are probably some small differences in jet sizes and tuning, but all that can be changed. I could wish I knew the CFM air flow ratings of all these carbs. The 32mm carbs obviously have a smaller bore, but the air horn is actually larger. I wonder if they don't flow pretty much the same.

emergency stop switch

The schematic shows it connected only to the ignition module. The ignition module then shuts down everything else. -
emergency stop switch
pegscraper replied to pegscraper's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Ah, I understand now. Thank you. I didn't know this thing existed. Never heard of such. -
For anyone who has an RSV and a shop manual, what is the emergency stop switch, where is it located on the bike, and what is its purpose? The early Royal Stars don't have this switch. The switch in question can be seen in the RSV shop manual on pages 8-76 to 8-80, or near the bottom left corner of page 481 of the Clymer's manual. This is not the engine stop switch on the right handlebar switchbox. This is something else. What in the world is it?

"detuned high performance"??? What the heck is that? Nobody knows. We won't know until it gets here. Just hold onto your shirt tail.

Good thing you ride a slow 1st gen. Glad you're okay. No doubt, we need to put the clamping on illegals.

I had no complaints about the D404 tires. I got 15,000 miles out of my replacement set. I ended up going with Avons though, because I wanted the narrow front tire in a WW, and Dunlop doesn't make one.
-
A 155/60? Wow, that would really be a short tire. It pretty well needs to be an 80. I have enough trouble keeping my mufflers off the ground as it is. It didn't take me 500 miles to break in the tire, either. It didn't take any longer than any regular MT I have tried.

Shoot, I thought it was already possible. I thought I remembered something being said about it a long time ago with regard to the fun and frivolous section and the member who was the instigation for that section being started. Obviously I never used it or tried to use it. If I don't want to look at something, I don't look at it. Gee, I wonder who requested this.

I'll agree. They look mediocre at best when they're new, and they don't look even that good for very long. Mine looks pretty cruddy. I tolerate it though, because of the noise they make when you need it. I'll go for accident preventing noise over looks every time. But I would like to find another way to go.

If you're mechanically inclined, VMX cams and springs are an easy swap and will give you in the neighborhood of a 15 hp boost. I'm running them, and I'd do the swap again in a heartbeat. Find some used ones on ebay and unload your old ones the same way, and you won't have very much in the job at all. Those who have to ask why you want them won't understand the answer anyway.

carb diaphragms
pegscraper replied to hipshot's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks, Squeeze. I know they sure look the same. But what made me wonder is I sometimes read here that the 1st gen diaphragms are hard to find, I suppose because the last 1st gen was several years ago now. But these V Max parts were still being put on bikes up until a couple years ago. So if the 1st gen diaphragms are the same thing, why are they so hard to find? -
carb diaphragms
pegscraper replied to hipshot's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Carb diaphragms for the 2nd gens are not the same as a 1st gen. What I would like to know is if the carb diaphragms for the 1st gen are the same as the V Max. -
There are a couple other tires that would almost certainly fit, but to date no one has tried them yet. There are a couple models of Kumho in the 165/80R15 size, and there is a Vredestein Sprint Classic 165HR15. The tires mentioned in this thread are literally all the ones we know of that will fit this bike. This bike requires a very narrow CT to clear the swing arm on the left side, and there just isn't much to pick from.

I have wondered if these things might need a dual controller like that. The balance between the two would be pretty critical, and I could see different people liking a different balance. That being the case, I will probably wire up my own jacket, just because it can be done so inexpensively. I have pictures somewhere of a Gerbings jacket that was taken apart to use as a good pattern. I haven't figured out how to do a set of gloves though. It's probably just as easy to get some commercially made electric gloves.

I got pounded by one in my leg so hard last summer that I wound up in the ER over it. I was having an extreme allergic reaction. I've been stung before and it was basically nothing, but I wasn't going 60 mph either. I don't know why I reacted to that hit last summer like that. I got hit again this year in my arm while riding, and it swelled up pretty good for about a week. It kept going and I almost went to a doctor over it, but then it finally started going down. I can still see the spot where the stinger was. Needless to say, I'm getting pretty nervous about getting hit again.

Question on pilot adjustment
pegscraper replied to BigBoyinMS's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
If the mufflers are still popping, turn 'em out some more. Yes, the screws can be adjusted with the carbs still in the bike. Even the caps can be popped off without taking anything apart. You just need a long screwdriver. -
You don't walk away from a tire that is airing up to seat the beads. What did the guy expect? What a moron. (The guy who was installing the tire, that is, not my friend.) That will happen with any tire if you put the air to it and walk away like that, and the fact that it was a CT had nothing to do with it. There is also a guy now who has installed a Nexen 165/80R15. At the moment he has less than 100 miles on it yet, so no real report on the tire. I've never heard of that brand. There is not much to pick from in this size. I have a couple thousand on my Federal by now. Still liking it as well as ever. My wife sure likes the ride better too. Even as just a passenger, she says that the ride is softer and more stable. I'm looking forward to not buying another rear tire next year.

2 gen clutch release cylinder r&r
pegscraper replied to gunboat's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
It wouldn't be the first time I took something apart without taking everything else off that the manual said to. The manual says that when removing the cam covers to check valve clearances or whatever (like swap cams), to drain the antifreeze and pull the coolant hoses off the heads. I found that it wasn't necessary to do that, which saved me a bunch of time. -

I've had that apart, but now I can't picture it well enough to know. Give it a shot pulling just the middle gear case cover and see if it can be done. I wouldn't pull the stator cover off if you didn't have to. It's not that difficult - just save the work and fiddling. I'm thinking at least the exhaust will have to come down though. I think there are a couple bolts just far enough behind it to not be able to get the allen wrench on them.
