  1. Very nice pics there, John. Thanks for putting them up. We don't hear enough out of you.
  2. Thanks for looking into it. I'll have to mark them some other way.
  3. Motorcycle oil is ridiculously overpriced. Shell Rotella T diesel oil is as good as anything going. It comes in both regular and synthetic, so take your pick. Regular is about $9 a gallon from Mallwart. Diesel oil does not have the friction modifiers in it that will ruin a wet clutch, and it still has high levels of zinc in it. Do not use any car oil that says "for gas engines" on the side of the bottle.
  4. I gotta say that this one gets a little old. Not all bikers are as decent as portrayed in the poem and everyone knows it. Most may be, but some are not.
  5. You bought it new and unused from a dealer. It ought to have the full warranty. What difference does it make how the dealer got it?
  6. Don, would it be possible to make an allowance that we could add tags on threads in the read only technical section? There are a couple in particular that I would like to be able to find more easily.

  8. I'm with DD. Does the car have to be complete, or can it be just a shell? I rode by one this evening in someone's driveway. No idea what the story is on it. Seems like it was brown too. It could have been old paint, or primer, or rust. I don't know.
  9. Welcome aboard. Were just the mufflers changed, or were the head pipes also changed for bigger ones? A muffler only swap doesn't generally require rejetting. Usually just backing out the pilot mixture screws a bit is enough. Stock jet sizes: pilots are #15, and mains are #122.5 for cylinders 1 and 2, #117.5 for cylinder 3, and #120 for cylinder 4. The staggered main jetting is a little strange. No one has a real good explanation for it, especially being a water cooled engine. But that's what they did. K&N air filters don't require rejetting either, which tells me that they do absolutely nothing for increasing the airflow or performance on this bike, or else they would require rejetting.
  10. That's a good question. I don't know. I've seen pics of 1st gen wheels modified to fit a VMX. But I don't know about what you're asking. Squeeze, you around?
  11. The V Star 1100 classic taillight has the exact same Yamaha part number as the RSV taillight. There are a number of custom taillights made for the V Star 1100 that should bolt right on the Venture, even if the application listing doesn't show it. Although your later Roadstar has a different looking taillight, the earlier ones have one that looks similar, but I don't know if it's exactly the same thing or not. There are also clear lenses available for the stock Venture taillight.
  12. Takamine is said to be a really good quality instrument, but I have no experience with them. I've never heard of Italia. I have a Washburn D200SWM with real wood top which I really, really like. I don't need anything more than that. I got it for about $160 used. My brother and another friend of mine have also had Washburns in the past and I was impressed with them all. I'd buy another one again in a second.
  13. Lori and I really like the Arai. They come in three basic shapes from average oval to more oval to more round to fit your head shape. Then there are different thicknesses of cheek pads available. Get these variables right and there's nothing more comfortable. Nothing else fits as well except by accident. Venting is good. Smoked and tinted shields are available. They're expensive, but I'm glad we have them. Once in a while I think I want to ride without a helmet on - I want the wind in my hair or whatever, but I don't get very far up the road before I miss having it on. The ride is more comfortable to have it on.
  14. Really?
  15. You get rid of that yard, where are you going to hold maintenance day?
  16. A local friend of mine uses them on an RSTD. He likes the ride and handling well enough. But he only gets about 7000 miles out of them. He put a new set on last spring, then took off on a trip through the west side of the country and back. Now he needs a new set already. Quite a good racket that motorcycle tire manufacturers have going for themselves here.
  17. I have one on the bench that I could easily get a pic for you. I'm not sure how the cruise cable could even be put in the other direction. When you pull on the cruise cable, the throttle cables should move as if you were twisting the grip. But when you twist the throttle grip, the cruise cable should not move.
  18. Probably what happened is you didn't get the top cable pulley back in right and it won't engage the bottom pulley. Look into the junction box again and make sure the teeth on the pulleys are on the correct side of each other. You can hold things in place and check it out to make sure its working right before putting the junction box back together.
  19. Yes. Part throttle spark advance has a big effect on gas mileage. That's why a mechanism to advance the spark at part throttle exists. You'll never feel this part being bad in the way the bike runs though. It'll run along just fine. The best way is to test it and see if it measures out okay.
  20. Some loctite will help ensure it doesn't come off again.
  21. Is it an 1100 or 650? I don't know if it makes a difference. My wife rides an 1100, but I've never had need to go looking for them. The shop manual says to remove the seat and the left side cover to get to them.
  22. There are "black boxes" that will plug into the bike and do this function. I've seen them before, but right now can't find a link to one. I know Kuryakyn makes one. Maybe check some of the links at the bottom of this page too. Indeed, the last link at the bottom of this page has several links to these things.
  23. If that '07 is relatively low mileage and in good shape, 8 grand is a fantastic price. I'd jump if I could, before someone else sees it. Less sure on an '89, maybe $2000 - $2500? A local friend of mine sold an '89 a couple years ago for $2000, showing its age, but in decent shape for its age, too - plenty of life left.
