Picture of a statue with me and the bike. I got 'em all in there. I did take the picture of the statue too.

They used to. I've had a couple sets of them. Did they stop? I wonder why.

White walls or black walls?

Yeah, but live in TN long enough it will eventually get boring. There will come a day when you just want to get somewhere and you will wish for a flat straight road, and there aren't any. Well, maybe not. Riding in TN, you sure do learn what the sides of your tires are good for. Here in northern IN, we don't use the sides.

More proof that these bikes are geared too high and really need a lower set of gears. Higher gearing and lower engine rpms are not always what they are said to be.

I know a few members here are aware of the story of Jonas' bike. Long story short, I was commissioned to do a bunch of modification work on the '98 Royal Star he keeps in here in the States. The list includes VMX cams, 32mm carbs and VMX rear gear along with a few other smaller items. Here are a few pictures to go along with the progress. The first is cams, VMX on the left and stock on the right. There's a good difference in size there. Cams and springs are a drop-in fit. Second is the VMX rear gear being machined for the speedo sensor. Third shows the new pair of bolt holes in the heads to mount the 32mm intakes which have a different bolt pattern to them. Here, the new holes are the upper right and lower left, where the holes for the stock 28mm carbs are the opposite. My '96 did not have the extra set of bosses for the bolt holes, so I used an adapter plate as shown in my 32mm carburetor swap article elsewhere on this board. I was not aware that later heads had blank bosses like these do, so in this case, instead of adapter plates, I drilled and tapped the bosses for the bolt holes. The adapter plates on my bike work fine, but this is a nicer result. The fourth shows the 32mm carbs in place. I am almost finished with this project. I have had to procure a few odd fiddly little parts at the last minute, stuff that you can never foresee. Once those come in, it should only be a couple more days and it should be ready to ride. I know he is anxious to see it and ride it this summer.

Sounds like a good idea. Thanks. I also wear an Arai full face helmet. No other helmet is more comfortable.

OK this is my Final question....

Freezy has it, but it looks like you guys have all the information anyway. Indeed, long boring story. The one I traded to him was machined by a friend of mine as I didn't have a mill then. I've gotten a mill since then and have machined out two VMX gear housings myself. I don't swap the gears themselves as that requires expensive tools I don't have and don't really need. I took a stock VMX rear gear and machined the blank boss out for the speedo sensor and also pulled the shock bolt out. Buying and modifying a VMX rear gear and selling the stock one let me basically break even. I have virtually no money in the thing, the only way I would do it for myself. -
Reviving a five year old thread for early royal star owners
pegscraper replied to muaymendez1's topic in Watering Hole
Sorry I didn't see your PM. I haven't been real chatty of late. Yes, I still use the shock link flipped around raising the rear of the bike. (That was four years ago I did that? I don't know what's happened to the last four years, nay - five.) I'm 6'1" and can use the legroom. I never did drag the stock mufflers, but it's still too easy to put the Kromewerks turnouts on the ground, as well as floorboards, kickstand and crashbars. I have to work to not do it, but I don't really want the Kromewerks mufflers ground up. The other parts are replaceable. If you can use the legroom or are on the opposite end of the weight scale as the Japanese who designed this bike, I would still recommend flipping the link around to get some more road clearance. I would like to think that Y designed that link that way to make the rear of the bike easily adjustable, and then forgot to mention it in the owner's manual. But I more tend to think it is pure accident. -
Yamaha used to make that part when the '96 - '01 Royal Stars were a little more current. They made a kit to mount the horn up in the front part of the bike somewhere, and then they made this part to cover the hole where the horn used to be. I couldn't figure out any real point to this other than an excuse to make some extra parts to sell. I've seen both of these parts on bikes. There aren't very many of them around anymore. They've been discontinued for a long time. It seems like no one else could see much point in it either.

Yamaha needs to just flat be slapped for what they did to the '96 - '01 Royal Stars. Their philosophy at the time must have been to see just how many design screw ups they could incorporate into one bike without actually killing the whole company off. Many of these things were mostly but not entirely corrected in the RSVs and later RSTDs. I love this bike's looks. Mechanically, they leave a lot to be desired. Seriously, who was it who decided that leaving the counterbalancer shaft out of the engine was a good idea? I'd like to meet this guy and drop kick him into the middle of next week. These bikes vibrate and the only real cure is to swap in an engine from an RSV. In fact that helps a number of other little ills also. I know a few guys who have done this.

Dying the lenses red. I never would have thought of that. This will be my method if I ever get around to doing this.
-
I've sure thought about, but never gotten around to it. The next issue is getting red lenses for them. I don't think amber lenses lit all the time is legal.

loud 96 RSTC?
pegscraper replied to anearthmonkey's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
The baffles may still be in there, but the packing may be burned out or may have been removed. You might be able to repack them and quiet them down a lot. It does make a difference. A big difference. I removed the packing and then removed the baffles in my 4x4 Krome Werks mufflers just for grins for a while. I put it back in before long though. I liked the sound, but figured I was pushing my luck for not getting a ticket. People could hear me coming from a long ways away. -
Starting Problems
pegscraper replied to colchubbs's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
The ignition switch is known for going bad and causing trouble on these bikes. You might look into that. -
Hold me but nothing more than that? Here's what else you can do. Take her to a fine restaurant and ask to be seated near the kitchen where you can see and smell all the food being brought out. Take a good look up and down the menu talking about all this good food. Then refuse to order anything. Make her sit there and go hungry.

Don't think so. I have one with a V8 in it and it doesn't act like that.
-
It's because the thing has a 3.7 liter V6 in it. That is a ridiculously small engine to put in a full size truck. That engine is way overworked with that much truck around it. I wouldn't buy even a Dakota without a V8 in it.

...or if you don't want to do the whole tire change procedure yourself, take the wheel off and take just the wheel in to the dealer. They shouldn't have any complaints about that. You'll save quite a bit of labor charge too.

Were there any improvements to the Venture over the last ten years?
pegscraper replied to Humbucker's topic in Watering Hole
Finicky handling can frequently be traced to loose steering head bearings. Y was very good about leaving these too loose. Front brakes can be easily upgraded. These two complaints can be easily fixed. What's left? What else are they complaining about? -
The Venture cams are a drop in fit, but they won't get you much. The exhaust cam is the same thing. The intake cam is slightly better, but barely. If you're going to expend the effort to swap cams, I wouldn't do these. VMX cams have 20º more duration if not 30º, I can't remember right now. The riding season is about over for this year anyway. Keep your eyeballs open during the winter. Some are bound to turn up. You might also consider buying a complete set of VMX heads. That will give you cams, springs, and a whole set of shims to play with for setting up valve clearances. Then you can sell the bare heads off and get a little something back. When I did this, for some reason the bare heads brought me more than I paid for the heads complete. I wound up with a few extra dollars in my pocket for swapping cams and springs. (You know, I have a pair of complete VMX heads setting here not doing anything. Long story... another guy was going to have me help him do his bike up, bought a bunch of parts and had them sent to my house, then lost interest in the project and I still have all his parts. I haven't heard from him for months. I should contact him and see what he'd like to do with these.) For air filter, I still recommend the modified stock airbox in the carb swap article. Anything other than that and you'll be on your own for jetting. Duplicating my work, eh? A couple more things you need to do - run curve 5 on the D3K ignition module, then slot the mounting holes on the pickup coil so it can be advanced another 4º relative to the rotor. I'm still trying to figure out how to get the VMX D3K in there. It has much better advance curves in it and a higher rev limiter, which with the VMX valve springs installed, the engine can handle. Yes, I swapped in a transmission from an '87 Venture last Spring. It was the best thing I ever did. I should have done it a long time ago. The gear ratios in the stock transmission are a joke. It is much more appropriately geared now and the engine runs the rpms it wants to run. The ironic thing about this is that I used to find myself hitting the rev limiter quite frequently, and now I never hit it at all. Evidence that the engine is running the rpms that it wants to run now and I don't have wind the crap out of the engine to get the bike to move. Now I can't decide if I want to use a VMX rear gear or use the stock one. I have both right now so I can try them. That VMX rear gear is a lot of fun. I used to have a V-boost setup in my bike too. I took it out for a while, but I may put it back in again. I'm not sure. I might have another even better idea up my sleeve.

I can't say it... I can't say it... sigh... never. Now I've given myself the kiss of death. It did blow over once in the driveway during a severe thunderstorm before I had room to put it in the garage. Fortunately no damage.
